  • www.crosstraini... Beta main bearing failures are now a significant issue on 2018, 2019 and 2020 Beta two strokes. See this vid: • Beta main bearing fail... When I talk about known issues on any bike, there are always guys who freak out and say that bike sounds like a pile of shit, no way I'm buying that! Well, don't watch the Beta known issues and common problems review vid if you are a panic merchant. You can make a comprehensive list of small issues with any brand like Beta. Like any brand, the Italian bikes have their niggling little faults and I covered these way back in a 2015 Beta enduro review. The good news? They have fixed quite a few. The bad news? There are a few things they keep ignoring... and some new issues with bikes the Beta Xtrainer, RR300 and RR390.
    Let's start with the good news. The mudflap for the rear shock used to slowly wear away the swingarm, now it's reshaped to avoid this. If you have an earlier model just trim it to suit.
    There were occasional false neutrals between some gears, a new gear selector on 2018 models has fixed this. Check our Beta reviews for more info.
    Beta plastics were very prone to cracking instead of bending in even small accidents or just leaning your fenders against a tree. It's early days, but our experience with the 2018 models suggests they finally got around to using the nice flexible materials everyone else uses.
    see ben's footage GH010707 ben crash stack jump backflip!! and my comments too.
    After several years of riders saying Beta enduro seats feel like slabs of concrete, the 2018 models finally have a softer foam.... good news if you do like to sit a lot on bikes like the Beta 2018 RR300 or RR250.

    One area we felt Beta let themselves down with Beta known issues and common problems was the heavy clutch. It wasn't bad compared to say cable clutches, but by European standards it wasn't good. The 2018 model is a big improvement. We've done a vid on clutch mods if you have an earlier model.
    Okay. So are the Beta 2018 known issues and common problems? This includes the RR350, RR390, RR430 and RR480 and two stroke models too.
    Europeans could still learn a lot from the Japanese about good electrics. It's a good idea to remove your headlight and fuel tank then use a pile of zip ties to get your wiring loom neat and not rubbing on anything. There is a critical electrical connection which is easily corroded and can shut down the oil injection system. Apparently it's been fixed for 2018, but some 2017 and all earlier models had the capacitor and diode block mounted upside down allowing water to enter heat shrink. The wires going into the magneto can be snagged by sticks when riding. On 2018 models these are secured better but still it can still happen.
    Also the positive wire from starter to the solenoid runs over the frame backbone above the rear shock. Reroute under the backbone to avoid the tank rubbing the wire... some dealers fix this in pre-delivery.
    More 2018 Beta known issues and common problems? The four stroke model RR350, RR390, RR430 and RR480 still use plastic cogs for the oil pump. These need to be replaced every 100 hours but most riders agree it would just be easier to make these steel. You can buy aftermarket steel cogs from Boano in Italy.
    The standard coolant has too much glyco-*
    The two stroke oil injection system works great for most riders, however there's a small but noticeable number of issues with bikes running too rich and fouling plugs. This is because the system defaults to something around 20:1 to avoid any engine seizures but of course it can foul plugs. Apparently the majority of cases are debris left in the system at the factory and a bit of carb cleaner will fix it. But if you can get some compressed air through it will be even better. Remember to always top up your oil. If your system stuffs up and defaults to the very rich mix it could be possible to drain your oil tank on a long ride if it wasn't full. Some riders are simply removing the system with parts from Beta that cost around $70.
    Text: Debris sometimes gets caught
    internally in the two ball valves of the
    internal solenoid during manufacturing,
    resulting in over oiling.
    A small but persistent Beta known issue and common problem is that pointy-ended sidestand that just sinks into soft ground. The crazy thing is the 2012 sidestand base was double the size and worked great. Why did Beta go back to the chopstick design. Who knows. A very simple fix but Beta has been ignoring complaints for years now.

    UPDATE: MAIN BEARING FAILURES 2018, 2019 2020 2021 BETA TWO STROKES
    Unfortunately there been main bearing failures in late model Beta two strokes... Beta USA estimates about a 5% failure rate (and later reported a 10% rate). Unfortunately there have been cases of multiple failures - in one case three times even when fixed by Beta mechanics, evidently as it has been hard to find the exact cause. Beta head office has agreed to fix these cases up to 90 hours, after that it is a case-by-case basis and they may only supply parts. Google 'Beta main bearing failures' for more information. The rate dropped a fair bit for 2020 models, it has been quite rare in 2021 models so hopefully they have fixed most of the problems.
    2019 AND 2020 BETA KNOWN ISSUES?
    Many have asked me for an updated list of known issues on 2019 and 2020 Betas. I just rang a Beta mechanic and he said there are three main issues for two strokes.
    One, the main bearing failures continue but at a lower rate thankfully.
    Two, the speedos are failing quite a bit. Often they keep resetting, this can be fixed by securing the input wires more firmly. But the speedos have other issues and dealers stock up on these to replace faulty units under warranty. Electrics can be dodgy and sometimes the whole wiring loom is replaced under warranty as it can be difficult to see where the problems are.
    Three, may sure you oil injection supply tube isn't kinked! A few guys have discovered this just in time to prevent seizing.
    Four, go over your new bike and check for bolts that are too tight, too loose, or missing. It seems this problem still hasn't gone away.
    Four, charging problems on the four strokes and electrical issues. Thee big one is bikes not charging the battery and it keeps running flat. Again, sometimes whole wiring looms are being replaced under warranty. Also there can be lots of niggling issues - read this story about one guy's Beta RR480:
    "My Beta 480 was a problem child. Battery went (again) third time out, replaced. Next time out it stopped dead after about an hour, after over a month in the shop the fault was traced to a loose bullet connector in guts of the loom. New harness ordered, weeks rolled by, fixed. A few more rides without issue, then I noticed oil dripping from both the transmission and engine cases. My 'local' dealer had now shut up shop, which meant over an hours drive. That was a biggie. Those leaks were the result, so I was told of a crook batch of gaskets. This required complete disassembly of the motor (cases split) to remedy, plus another month and then some off the road. Beta covered the labor for the job, but not the consumables, so I still copped a $100 bill for that. All this on an engine not even 12 hours old.
    In both cases Beta seemed reluctant, at best to make things right, and I got the impression the dealers were trying to get blood from a stone. I dunno, maby the thing will run for another 500 hours without missing a beat, maby not. I can live with boutique brands and limited dealer coverage, but not a company who doge their responsibility to customers, then acts like they're doing you a favor to honor a warranty claim".

    whenever i mention known issues of certain bikes there are always viewers who panic and think it must be the worst bike ever. especially when i do these vids that list known issues. and no matter how many times i say this, they simply don't get it. here we go again....
    - all bikes have a list of known issues if you dig around for info
    - they usually only affect a small number of riders
    - most have very easy fixes.
    you can really spot the 'glass is half empty' crowd in these responses lol.

      Just picked up 2019 300RR. how deep and long of a water crossing do you think will cause a problem with the carby? the hoses look long enough that you'd have to submarine this thing for a full minute before aspirating water in the carb.

      tell that to my friend with his ktm 450 2014...he is sick with maint. still she blow up...3000 euro is a damn lot for a 4000 euro bike..i dont know why you ktm doesnt brake but here all of the have serius issues...we talk about used bikes..and 90% of us is used we buy..its a gamble against you..just like bmw-audi-merc same eu mentality..small companies that love what they do will survive...all enduro safari here they use beta 300 with a shit load of hours ..1000 hours and still going with only piston change.ktm owners they keep say BS so ktm hold a value when they want to sell her..but people know it now thats why a wr450 at same year of any ktm enduro..wr cost way more used...that says all..beta is way better than ktm. true

    There is one very serious problem with the Beta enduro line up. The dealers are aware of it but don't admit it until you confront them about it. The problem? One Beta isn't enough. I bought a 2018 390 rrs and thought I had the perfect all around bike that could do everything and was super fun. Well it was and still is, but then I rode a 250 Xtrainer. Wouldn't you know it? now I need a 250/300 Xtrainer. Damn you Beta and your free demo days. I was happy with one bike and now I need two. Be aware of this issue when buying a Beta enduro bike. You may end up with more than one if you aren't careful...
    Seriously tho, that Xtrainer is ridiculously fun.

    Excellent and helpful summary! It's funny how many viewers see a list of known issues and panic or assume it's a bad bike. I know from personal experience you can make lists like this with any bike. And you have your one-eyed fundamentalists who ignore the common problems of their favorite brand and think all the other brands suck LOL.

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      fundamentalists for sure, ken! often there's not a lot of rational thinking when it comes to dirt bikes, with guys either ignoring problems with their favourite manufacturer or blowing issues up out of all proportion.... sigh.

    Own a Beta 300RR 2018 for over a year now, fantastic bike and best in its class. I watched this great video that covers a lot of points that I would make too. One point that in my opinion is overseen is the SPEEDOMETER, I ride in Brazil hard-enduro and over 90% of the bikes here have broken bases where the bolts hold the speedometer, I have a 3D printer and fabricated a very light base where these "titties" stick in and alleviate tension and solves this problem. The rear leds also burn quickly. Another mod I made I removed the nuts from the steering angle limiter and related them with 2 rivets which allows me too make tighter angles to do 180degrees turns. ZipTy also the radiator fin protectors as they will fall off eventually and you lose them. My biggest complaint is the stock suspension set-up that didn't work for me and most riders at 180lbs in 2019 the suspension is noticeably better - I revalved and put SAE 2.5W in the front . I also got rid of the oil injection system and transformed it into a radiator expansion (not that I ever needed that) , I run (like I have done for decades) Motorex Cross Power its a much superior oil grade to the fast diluting "autolub oils" that the manufacturer recommends - the Motorex is more than the double the price but I spend less as it consumes noticeably less and the bike runs so much cleaner. I have done all plus a number of other DIY upgrades to make this already great bike an absolute winner - I too run Tubliss on both wheels and get the best of my tires much longer and never any punctures.

    I've owned a 2017 300RR for a couple years now. Best bike ever owned. You know when most of the the issues can be fixed with Zip ties you have a real winner!!! Is it possible to make a better dirt bike, Yes, but it would not be too much better, without anti gravity technology. This is a really good bike. I feel like it has actually saved my life, at least injury, a couple times with its great power band. I stocked my tool box with all the extra carb jets and the power band is so wide and smooth I have not found a need to change the jetting yet!! I ride mostly in my area from 2000 to 8000 ft. 100F to 40F. I've been riding Enduros since the 70's, this bike today, is like a PE250 Suzuki was in the 70's. All you need to have fun in the dirt and come home with a grin.

      it really is a great engine, ross. some riders say the new KTM engines are smoother with the counter balancer but i haven't had a chance to try them yet. but the beta power delivery is brilliant. 😊

    • @RossHenne
      @RossHenne 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, the power band is where it really shines, the suspension can be dialed in nicely too. I think it is in the ball park with the Husqvarna or KTM. Closer than the price difference would imply. Certainly one of the great 2 stroke dirt bikes out there today. I changed out the springs for my weight, put on decent radiator guards and hand guards and a spark arrester muffler, it is as good a bike as I will ever need.

    Maybe more individual problem, but 2023 300 RR (35h) had dashboard battery holder come loose and doesn't have proper contact. When started to replace the OEM battery, found out that the factory one still works, but only on specific angle / tapping on the battery. The interesting part would be that I'd consider it quite common problem as there isn't any vibration killer material between the battery skrew and battery, meaning it's plastic against battery and eventually the 2T vibrations I'd assume would vibrate battery holder connections open from the panel (as there's 1mm 'free' space between the dash panel and the battery holder). Contacted the Beta and waiting for their input (dealership shared that not covering pbly), but youtube has shown to add some sponge between the skrew and the battery to hold it in place (until the contacts come completely loose, then probably need to break it to pieces to be able to solder the contacts back together).

      Julian Heer
      I'd have to say I agree there.
      The blue and yellow team are quick to address know issues as well.
      There was some trouble with the starter Bendix on 2016 & some 2017 2t models, they beefed the unit up and replaced any that had issues with the new part, often outside warranty.
      Not too many other common faults seem to surface.
      There's always a few in all brands of course.

    The oil injection warning lamp should stay on at start up for a few secs. Mine didnt, and when the pump was disconnected the light didnt come on. This was a potential disaster obviously, fixed by dealer replacing the loom. Late 2017 bikes affected. Disconnect your pump for a few minutes at idle and check the light comes on.

    Good video! Another one to add is the speedo cable at the caliper. In stock form it loops outwards and can get caught by branches and such. If you pull it in tight to the caliper and "zip tie" it the chances of it getting pulled (or broken) are slim to none.

    I've had great initial quality on my 2018RRS. It was prepped by Browne's Cycles in Paso Robles, Calif. I'll be taking it in for the 90 hour service soon. There is one thing it has done maybe 3 times in ~7 months I want to ask them about. After a cold start and about minute idling the bike seems to be running smooth. Once riding the idle speed starts to climb. Within a couple minutes it will be 4K rpm or higher. Shutting down, waiting a few seconds, and restarting fixes the issue. I've read the posts in the user forums that suggest not touching the throttle before starting. I'm careful not to move the throttle before or immediately after starting. At all other times the fuel injection works brilliantly.

      I had the exact same thing happen to me with my '18 390rrs. My very first ride it happened the same way you described. I let it idle for maybe a minute ( I was excited to ride my new bike) engine is still relativly cold and set off. A couple hundred meters down the road the revs started to climb so I pulled the clutch, the motor sputtered and then cut out. I re started the bike and it ran smooth after that. Happened a few more times before I stopped setting off before the motor was at temp. No more issues since.

    Great video and well researched as usual. I got my MY18 Xtrainer from Jody South at Euro Enduro and agree that he is a good bloke to deal with and knows his stuff. When I pick up my bike he went over everything with me and showed me all the stuff he tidied up pre delivery. There was so much stuff he tidied up I couldn't remember it all but it seemed like all the stuff that has been mentioned on this video. Now for a few comments of my own for Xtrainer owners and possible new owners. Suspension and deflection is pretty bad in standard trim for a rider that is around 93kg all up with riding gear, tools, water etc. Fitting a Fatty Golden tyre on the front made an instantly noticeable difference, especial on downhill runs. I have now had the full suspension treatment done by FFRC... springs, valving etc (Barry has an excellent video on these mods) and it has transformed this bike. The difference is amazing and worth every cent. Highly recommended.

    Making a perfect bike is bad for business because consumers will start to expect perfection all the time. Making the consumer fix/improve things themselves saves money and also supports the aftermarket business.

    Beta also overstates their spring rates. It is hardly sprung for 180 pounds out of the box. Stepping up two rates on the forks and 1 on the Shock (for the rocky terrain here) proved to be properly sprung for a 180 pound rider like myself. A slight rework of the fork valving also improved things greatly. No other issues so far on my 18 RR with about 50 hours.

I posted a pretty in depth detail of prepping our 4Ts for Baja in the BETA DUAL SPORT/ADVENTURE BIKE SETUP: RS390, RR-S390, RS500, RR-S500 (but left out the 430 RR-S :X) thread on ADV Rider. We did a lot of work on the wiring harness. As soon as the bikes are out of warranty we will really attack these issues.

    390RRs 2018: Thermostat leaked when delivered. Dealer fixed it ASAP. Radiator hoses were loose and leaking. I fixed them easily. Noticed a very small leak between the case halves gasket right at the bottom of the engine when I dropped the skid plate to change the oil. Beta USA has acknowledged at least 6 additional 2018 390RRs bikes with the same issue. (losing about 1-2 drops of engine oil each day when the motor is NOT running) The dealer will remove the engine, split the cases, and replace the gasket just before the warranty expires. I would like to know if this issue is showing up in Austrailia. I am LOVING the 390RRs!! Thank you, Barry, for this vid and all the training ones.

      thanks for the details rick, i've listed all the issues two dealers have faced, and particularly jody who is a beta mechanic as well so sees the common problems all the time. poorly tightened bolts is common but only the less important stuff... engine bolts etc have always been torqued correctly in their experience. no oil leaks... so far!

    • @ExpectRust
      @ExpectRust 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Perhaps better communication needs to be had between the mechanics and Beta, then disseminated to all dealers. It would be nice to take care of these things in the PDI.

    • @crosstrainingenduro

    • @ricklieberson5576
      @ricklieberson5576 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know for a fact there is good communication between Beta USA and their dealers. The community is pretty small so I would assume there is pretty good communication between the dealers too. What did surprise me was when I learned my local dealer's mechanics did not have any formal training from Beta. I would have assumed there would be at least 1 "factory trained" technician in each dealership. That being said, they never fail to amaze me on how well they respond to questions and how much they enjoy promoting the Beta brand. They are good people.

    • @ExpectRust
      @ExpectRust 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah I'd like to think that's how it would work. Maybe some things just get overlooked. What's that saying? An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure :)
      On a positive note: I've heard really good things about our local Beta dealer "Clay's Offroad" here in New Brunswick, Canada. I'm looking to purchase a 2018 XTrainer. I've been watching this old guy who rides one and he's been promoting the bike for a while, I think I've drank the Koolaid. That old guy must be getting a cut... ; )

    The problems I have encountered in the six months of owning my 390rrs. The thermometer for the engine temp is tempermental at best. Some days it gives me a temp other days nothing. If I wash the bike it says the motor is over 150 C when the bike has not been run at all that day. The plastics explode but they are cheap to replace. The suspension is a little soft for my taste but I am 215lbs with gear and bag so maybe I need a tune. The gearing is a little tall for really tight single track 15/48 is great for the road 13/48 is great for logging/fire roads but I will have to go to 13/52 for any serious single track, especially if I want to race.
    All in all the bike is fun reliable and relatively cheap compared to orange or white pumpkins. I will buy another Beta but only because of the other very serious problem the bikes have.
    See my other comment.

      @progammler 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Although very true for brands like Beta, GG, Tm and even Husqvarna (pre KTM models), definitely not for all. I could make an interesting list for GasGas no doubt but when I think of my Yamaha YZ from 2006.. I did not have to fix anything on that bike in 5 years and even sold it with the original spark plug. No modifications needed, no cracked plastics, no loose screws! Nothing at all! Not even loose spokes after the first hours... Same goes for my friends Honda CR from 1989! Truly extraordinary build quality. Can't say the same for GG ('10, '18), Husky ('07) or KTM ('14) unfortunately. (that said I am very happy with my '18 GG)

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      as a rule of thumb i'd say japanese bikes are definitely better on the fine details stuff e.g. electrics, finish, mechanicals etc. but their issues list grows because of things like getting with the 21st century and using hydraulic clutches and putting sixth gears in the bigger bikes etc. all currrent dirt bikes are brilliant of course, but just saying they all have a fair number of small issues. :)

    What about the grabby front brake that can catch unexpectedly, did they fix that? That's a major safety hazard that a LOT of Beta owners complain about.

      first thread sounds like a guy who just came off a bike with mushy brakes. flipped quickly through the vid but couldn't find a reference to brakes. i've met so many guys riding betas and never heard a single complaint. googled 'beta front brake problems' and nothing.....

    • @endurobandit
      @endurobandit 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      That's strange... One of my friends also test rode a Beta and said it had the same problem. Kyle from Dirt Bike channel has several videos were he mentions the bad front brake on the 2017 Beta 300. It took him weeks to heal from an injury because of it, and he's a good rider that's used to riding new KTM's.

      Flush line and replace fluid. Try a small bevel on the leading edge of the pads, or a different pad. Like CTES mentioned elsewhere, could be something in the production run of the models with the issue, versus no issues with the aus models.

    Did they finally fix the forks hard coating issue or do all new owners expect to spend 400 dollars to correct this again this year?

      @crosstrainingenduro  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      never heard of that issue in australia, and i spoke to a few beta mechanics and dealers for this vid who were very happy to share all the problems they've hit over the past few years. any more details? how often has it happened? which year models?

    • @mr.midlifecrisis8547
      @mr.midlifecrisis8547 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi Barry, it was an ongoing issue with the Sachs forks wearing internally due to missing / poor hardcoating on the upper tubes. There's a 35 page thread on BetaRiders forum detailing it.

    Hi, i am interested in a 2018 beta. It has the oil injection bypass. I would like it to be electric oil injected. Would you consider reinstalling the electrical oil injection system?

      I know a long-term Beta mechanic who says the failure rate is low, but high enough to consider eventually removing at some point after your warranty is finished.

      waiting to see how all of that pans out but can't say i've been overly impressed with how a 'family owned' italian company has treated a national distributor who made so many sacrifices and did so much for them. :(

    So is the oil injection bullet proof? Other than the diode problem, is there record of any other failures?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      this was covered in the video, luke. and i didn't mention any diodes in relation to the oil injection so not sure what you mean....

    • @LukeBrinkerhoff
      @LukeBrinkerhoff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      CROSS TRAINING ENDURO SKILLS yes, you cover a small portion on the injection that I have watched. But I am referring more towards it failing as in not allowing oil(since it’s not a pump) I like the idea that it uses engine vacuum but has there ever been reports of a blown engine due to lack of oil or something with the oil system other than going rich. should have been a little more clear.
      Plus you did talk about diode 😏 just referring to the earlier issue.
      Have a good day!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      gotcha luke. the oil pump failures i'm aware of occurred due to the mentioned reason, or could most likely be attributed to that. i didn't find any evidence of the the pump itself failing due to poor design etc. but then it's still all quite new so who knows if they'll become very unreliable after 100 hours? i know some riders convert back to premix after six to 12 months on the bike for this reason, because the long term reliability hasn't been established yet.

    • @LukeBrinkerhoff
      @LukeBrinkerhoff 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@crosstrainingenduro I am deleting mine, just for the peace of mind, I really liked the idea of it, but without going into deep details, I had a broken subframe, which caused an air filter sealing problem(everytime you put pressure on the subframe) causing a gap, so It sucked in all kinds of sand and dirt. Huge motor rebuild. Well I dont want to go through this again, so I am going to delete. and its not really the gate itself I am worried about, its the hose, and nipple. all it takes is a pinch while you're riding, or the nipple getting broke off, or getting loose. Thank you!

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      ah that reminds me, one guy did have the hose melt against the exhaust pipe but he noticed just in time. definitely pays to zip tie on to the nipples and well away from the exhaust.

      @@crosstrainingenduro May I ask; does the 2020-2022 Sherco 300 2-strokes have oil injection, or do you mix oil in the fuel?

    • @crosstrainingenduro
      @crosstrainingenduro  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Still premix, which we like. In our group no one ever had oil injection problems but it's always in the back of your mind once the warranty lapses. Our Beta dealer always recommended ditching it before getting too many hours up on the bikes.
