The song is about a friend of the band, a girl named Michelle Young who is thanked in the Appetite For Destruction cover sleeve. Slash knew Young throughout junior high, as she was a friend of Slash's first girlfriend.[2] According to Axl Rose, he and Young were in a car together when "Your Song" by Elton John came on the radio and Young 'happened' to mention that she had always wanted someone to write a song about her.[3]
Rose's first attempt was a sweet, almost romantic song, but one that had absolutely nothing to do with the reality of Michelle's life. He was unhappy with this version and re-wrote it, this time seeking to be completely honest.[4] Several members of the band expressed concern over this version of the song, especially Slash, fearing it would upset Young.[5] Rose himself then became hesitant, but finally decided to show it to her. She liked the song and the attention it brought to her, and was especially pleased with its honesty, most notably regarding her drug addiction, the death of her mother and her father's work in the pornography industry,[5] all of which are mentioned within the first verse. According to Slash's self-titled autobiography, Young managed to clean up and move across the country to escape her lifestyle.

The "can't tell" at the end, is about telling on a person's past... You can't tell who and what have some people been in their lives before they met you. Obviously here, someone's had quite a rough life and now are all nice and clean, but you can't tell what hells has that person gone through to get there.

Michelle Young was an ex of Axl Rose... she was one of many girls on the Sunset Strip back in the 80's who was a product of dysfunctional or broken families. She gave an interview for a book, where she said the song 'My Michelle' was just how Axl perceived her - her mom died from heroin use, her dad worked in the porn industry... The Beatles had a song 'Michelle' ; this was the opposite of that song. It was more like, "When r u gonna get your act together, Michelle? Stop doing what you r doing and things will turn around eventually..."
Jani Lane of Warrant, who was part of the Hollywood rock scene in the 80's, said that there was a lot of "sleeping around" w/ musicians passing around girlfriends like baseball cards... There was no girl there who was immune from drugs, alcohol or hooking up w/ multiple "rock stars" from the L.A. scene... I'm sure Michelle Young fell in that category.
Axl was dating Erin Everly at the time, and he wrote 'Sweet child O' mine" for her... and I suspect 'Estranged' about their breakup. Yet, that didn't stop Axl from screwing drummer Steven Adler's then-gf Adriana Smith in the studio and recording her moans for the GNR track 'Rocket queen' (which was pretty much what Adriana was about back then). Ah, the land of infidelity...

Loving these reviews, should definitely look into "shotgun blues", "bad obsession" or "dust n bones" by GNR, defo worth a review and very underrated songs.

You should listen to another Guns N' Roses song from the album Use Your Illusion II called Breakdown. It's certainly a song that I listen to and my brother as well that helps to get through those dark and down times in life.

From Wikipedia, "The song is about a friend of the band, a girl named Michelle Young who is thanked in the Appetite For Destruction cover sleeve.
During the 2006 NY and European Tours, Axl Rose shared the vocal duties with former Skid Row singer Sebastian Bach.[6]"

Check out some LA GUNS...which actually is the "Guns" in the Guns N Roses. Traci Guns formed the band with Axl Rose. Then, he left and started LA GUNS. I'd suggest RIP AND TEAR, SEX ACTION, KISS MY LOVE GOODBYE, and more.
