The Righteous Brothers were Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield. Bobby Hatfield is the one singing here. Apparently, they had an agreement that on each of the albums they made, each of them would get one solo. This was Bobby's solo. Unchained Melody was written sometime in the mid-1950s--1954, I think--for a movie called Unchained, which is a movie about a man in prison who is contemplating either escaping and living life on the run or finishing his sentence and going back to his family. Many other singers had already recorded their own versions of Unchained Melody before Bobby Hatfield came along and, in my opinion, made it his. He was different in that he sang the opening notes of last verse MUCH higher than it was written... and since then, his version has become the jukebox standard.

While I appreciate the talent of the Righteous Brothers and I did not in any way put them down, the comment I made was in response to the OP saying that other artists could not do this, but there are a few who could.
Someone made the same comment about Jim Reeves (under the video Jim Reeves 1964) that his voice was so smooth and his performance so flawless that they just could not believe that he was not lip-synching but was rather singing LIVE in front of an audience in Oslo. The following is my response to them about Jim Reeves but it is also true about the Righteous Brothers and after hearing your amazement that this is a live performance, I have done a cut and paste to put it here. Jim Reeves (and the Righteous Brothers) lived long before the days of autotune and back then if any performer ever tried to lip-synch a performance he or she would probably have been booed off stage. If we wanted to hear a RECORDING of their voice we could have stayed home and played their records or listened to them on the radio. When we paid to see them live we expected to see them live. That smooth voice was just all The Righteous Brothers. Like I said, lip-syncing was not a thing back then but even if it had been, the Righteous Brothers had no need of it. They were just that good. Those of us who are older than dirt and were around to hear these great live performances by the likes of the Righteous Brothers, can be forgiven if we are less than pleased by some of that crowd of yahoos that passes as singers today when they record take after take after take and then they pull a sound bite from here and a sound bite from there and take the first verse from this recording and the second verse from that recording and the first half of the chorus from another recording and the second half of the chorus from yet another recording and then a mixer splices it all together in order to get a decent sounding recording that is fit to release. Obviously then they HAVE to either lip-synch or use autotune to hide the fact that they actually cannot sing so when we see them "live" we are not seeing them live, we are seeing them lip synch. That's why I have not watched a Music Award Show in at least a dozen years.

I’m so thrilled to see young people “discovering” this music now!!! The Righteous Brothers consisted of Bill Medley & Bobby Hatfield. The music was know as white soul or Blue eyed soul music. It was the best time in my life & I absolutely loved this song, had most of their albums. I also love You’ve Lost that Living Feeling. NOW FINALLY, younger people may understand why we “old farts” have been bitching about most of today’s music, with auto tune & other computerized methods. These songs they actually had sing! What gets me is that he sings this quite differently to the studio version, and that last note, which no man has any right to be hitting, is sung live with no auto tune, no backing track, and wasn't on the studio version. It's just genius.
Personally, I reject the term, "Blue-Eyed Soul." It's all about that intensity in words and emotions that comes from deep within... your soul, regardless of complexion (or degree of melanin) or color of eyes. Didn't Joe Cocker also have soul?

They got their name when they were singing (early years before becoming popular)at a night club near an military base and one of the black guys in the audience yelled "man, you guys are righteous" and the name stuck. Bobby Hatfield, in this video, and Bill Medley (a strong barritone), make up the duo. No auto tune or other computer tricks - all pure talent for live performances. I have listened to the Righteous Brothers ever since I can remember. This live rendition that Bobby sings is by far, so much better than the recorded version that has been out since ‘65. If anyone could make a change and make it sound “better” it was Bobby Hatfield. I know there are many others who sang this song, and sang it with it with heart, and their fans loved it! I know opinions are like sphincters, and everyone has one, however I agree with Simon Cowell on this one, that this song sung by Bobby Hatfield is the best ever recorded. I believe this song was written and destined to be Bobby Hatfield’s song. I, and many other commentators have listened to this song multiple times, and to get chills/goosebumps every time one listens to Bobby Hatfield singing this song is indicative that Bobby’s soul is singing to yours. In my opinion, this type of “soul” music is rare.

I lost my great love May 13th... she had just turned 34. She died the day before my 45th birthday. I rediscovered this song while I was caring for her during her illness. @Leonard Chornomaz Actually Vera Lenora is right, this song was originally written to be part of the score to a movie called "Unchained" (1955), which was based on a book written in 1952. The convicted felon has to decide whether to just peacefully do his time or try to escape so he can be with his wife. I don't know how it ends since I've never seen it, but the song got its title because that's how people knew it - as the "unchained" melody.
Many years later in an interview Bobby was asked how he felt about being a legend, and he said he never considered himself as one. That just blows me away!

Thank you for your honesty. I haven't experienced this much romantic passion in my 73 years of this life, but I experience this song as spiritual love and longing. Bobby Hatfield is my favorite singer, and many of his romantic love songs transcend to spiritual love to me. My very favorite song of his is "For Your Love".

When "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" went to the top of the British charts in the 1960s, it easily beat another version of the same song by the UK's Cilla Black. One thing you could always be sure of with the Righteous Brothers was that, whatever they sang, it was absolute quality. And that in the days when just about everyone was expected to sing live. Although they were always a class act, we didn't actually appreciate them quite as much as we should have because in that era we were really spoiled for choice with high-quality music from so many singers and groups, all singing and playing live. However, when you compare them the absolute fucking shite being churned out by modern singers and groups (with notable exceptions), it becomes clear just how good they were. The song "Unchained Melody" was originally written in 1955 and has, in the meantime, been recorded by something like 670 different artists. But this beautiful recording by Bobby Hatfield, with his truly magnificent voice, has become the definitive version. Interestingly, when Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were in the recording studio laying down tracks for their album, the decision as to which of them should actually sing the song was decided by the toss of a coin. Those of us who are older than dirt and were around to hear these great live performances by the likes of the Righteous Brothers, can be forgiven if we are less than pleased by some of that crowd of yahoos that passes as singers today when they record take after take after take and then they pull a sound bite from here and a sound bite from there and take the first verse from this recording and the second verse from that recording and the first half of the chorus from another recording and the second half of the chorus from yet another recording and then a mixer splices it all together in order to get a decent sounding recording that is fit to release. Obviously then they HAVE to either lip-synch or use autotune to hide the fact that they actually cannot sing so when we see them "live" we are not seeing them live, we are seeing them lip synch. That's why I have not watched a Music Award Show in at least a dozen years.
Its called real talent..respect to the young generation that appreciates real music.

I’m so thrilled to see young people “discovering” this music now!!! The Righteous Brothers consisted of Bill Medley & Bobby Hatfield. The music was know as white soul or Blue eyed soul music. It was the best time in my life & I absolutely loved this song, had most of their albums. I also love You’ve Lost that Living Feeling. NOW FINALLY, younger people may understand why we “old farts” have been bitching about most of today’s music, with auto tune & other computerized methods. These songs they actually had sing! They HAD to rely on their God given talent. You should check out more of their sings, try: You’ve lost that living feeling, for one. What gets me is that he sings this quite differently to the studio version, and that last note, which no man has any right to be hitting, is sung live with no auto tune, no backing track, and wasn't on the studio version. It's just genius.

I have listened to the Righteous Brothers ever since I can remember. This live rendition that Bobby sings is by far, so much better than the recorded version that has been out since ‘65. If anyone could make a change and make it sound “better” it was Bobby Hatfield. I know there are many others who sang this song, and sang it with it with heart, and their fans loved it! I know opinions are like sphincters, and everyone has one, however I agree with Simon Cowell on this one, that this song sung by Bobby Hatfield is the best ever recorded. I believe this song was written and destined to be Bobby Hatfield’s song. I, and many other commentators have listened to this song multiple times, and to get chills/goosebumps every time one listens to Bobby Hatfield singing this song is indicative that Bobby’s soul is singing to yours. In my opinion, this type of “soul” music is rare.
I'm so jealous he got to hear this for the first time. This is without a doubt the single greatest vocal performance by any singer ever! The things this man did with his voice was INSANE. If you've ever noticed every time you hear some artist do a cover of this (even some of the greats) they change it up a little. The convicted felon has to decide whether to just peacefully do his time or try to escape so he can be with his wife. I don't know how it ends since I've never seen it, but the song got its title because that's how people knew it - as the "unchained" melody.

Many years later in an interview Bobby was asked how he felt about being a legend, and he said he never considered himself as one.

The song was written for a 1955 movie called Unchained, about a guy in prison who couldn’t wait to get back to his girl. The guy who wrote the lyrics refused to put any of that stuff into the song so it became a general love song, sung by many before the Righteous Brothers did it .. but nobody else did it like this, altho many other singers covered the song later (including Elvis) and based their versions of it on this version by The Righteous Brothers ... It is a solo song, but the Righteous Brothers were a duo so they flipped a coin to see who was going to do it, and Bobby Hatfield won. The other member of the duo was Bill Medley who arranged the music for the studio version as well as for this performance AND he played piano while Bobby was singing .. so it was still a team effort. Bobby sang another version for the movie “Ghost “ and this revived interest in the 1965 version (this one) which was then re-released. It's amazing to me when this generation freaks out when someone can sing with out a backing track playing in their earbuds, Auto-tune falsely making up for someone who can't sing, dancers distracting from a singers lack of stage presence.

There have been some other songs that I like but none compare to “Unchained Melody!” No one can do it the justice that it deserves, like “The Righteous Brothers! I have waited my whole life, to find a man who would feel that passionate about me but so far, I haven’t found him. Thank you for listening and loving this song! Thank you for your honesty. I haven't experienced this much romantic passion in my 73 years of this life, but I experience this song as spiritual love and longing. Bobby Hatfield is my favorite singer, and many of his romantic love songs transcend to spiritual love to me. My very favorite song of his is "For Your Love".

Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley. This was the only song that Bobby alone sang. If you listen to You've lost that lovin feeling or just once in my life. You will understand. They once sang in a predominately black club once and someone shouted out you two are Righteous Brothers!! The name stuck

You're absolutely right there, Nova. Another song Bobby Hatfield sang alone was "I Love You (For Sentimental Reasons)". Likewise, Bill Medley sang "Ole' Man River" alone.
When "You've Lost That Loving Feeling" went to the top of the British charts in the 1960s, it easily beat another version of the same song by the UK's Cilla Black. One thing you could always be sure of with the Righteous Brothers was that, whatever they sang, it was absolute quality. And that in the days when just about everyone was expected to sing live.
Although they were always a class act, we didn't actually appreciate them quite as much as we should have because in that era we were really spoiled for choice with high-quality music from so many singers and groups, all singing and playing live. However, when you compare them the absolute fucking shite being churned out by modern singers and groups (with notable exceptions), it becomes clear just how good they were.
The song "Unchained Melody" was originally written in 1955 and has, in the meantime, been recorded by something like 670 different artists. But this beautiful recording by Bobby Hatfield, with his truly magnificent voice, has become the definitive version.
Interestingly, when Bill Medley and Bobby Hatfield were in the recording studio laying down tracks for their album, the decision as to which of them should actually sing the song was decided by the toss of a coin. Bobby won and the rest, as they say, is history.
