You are correct in that it is talent, but we had many talented performers in the 50s and 60s. Responding to each part of your message,,, auto tune makes a mockery of sound now, anyone can make a record that will be manipulated until it passes for ok quality. Next, sub-par sound systems,,, those were the best sound systems available at that time, analog, not digital. Lastly, singers then had to have real, well polished singing talents and vocal control. Today, most of those old style needs are not even considered because the industry would then offer only a few singers and groups that can actually sing well.
That little smile at the end was for knowing he hammered it, and knowing his mom was in the audience for the first time hearing him live. Did his momma proud
This was the first time Bobby's mom ever got to see her son perform, and he turned out what is considered the greatest solo live performance of all time!
I love Unchained Melody and loved Bobby's voice - that song was my favorite and always will be. I married in 1965... 58 years later my husband went to heaven. This song has been my healing and has encouraged me to look at all my beautiful memories I have and thank God for all my blessings.
Note: He actually had a cold that day. No rehearsal. No gimmicks. It was also the 1st time his mum heard him sing "live". The little smile at the end was for her ❤❤❤
@janettewebster2151: I read somewhere that there was a rehearsal in the studio on the day of the show. I also read that the conditions in the studio (acoustics? temperature? humidity?) were so good that Bobby proposed to Bill that he (Bobby) could add those high notes at the end of the song that night - notes that were NOT on the studio recording (album) that had become a hit that summer. Thus, without that rehearsal, we likely would not have heard those high notes in Bobby's live performance later that night.

Truly fantastic! I am old enough to remember when he sang it on the Andy Williams show live. A natural talent with a beautiful voice, who passed away far too soon.
When Bobby Hatfield sang this song, he made it his own and I have NEVER heard it done better. You can watch him sing and it is natural. No trouble with high notes or lack of breath. He just started singing and enjoyed himself and did a beautiful job. It will never be topped. He and Bill Medley sang songs with clarity and were always on the spot.

The look on Andy Williams face said it all. He knew he'd just witnessed something very special, and the fact we are watching and enjoying this 57 years later is testament to what a fine performance this was. People will still be watching and re acting to this in 57 years time.

Decades ago I had gone to a Righteous Brothers concert. When Bobby Hatfield performed this song if you didn't get "Chicken Skin" that stirred your soul than you were dead. He sounded just like this as I was seated several feet away from the stage. Plus, when he and Bill Medley came together and sang it was awesome! Pure talent and not assisted by some computer..God given talent!
The late, great Bobby Hatfield. He had an incredible voice and range. The term "Blue-Eyed Soul" was coined for this group as they sang with so much soul. Backstory on this performance and song.....the recorded version is slightly different than this tv version. The song came from an old prison movie called Unchained. There were 3 recorded versions ( with Al Hibbler's being the best) until Bobby sang it. Now there have been over 650 covers of the song. For most of us though, Bobby's is the best. His recorded version is featured in the movie Ghost ( giving it a rebirth onto the music charts)and has been used in tv commercials. Bobby was 24 when he sang this. He had a cold, and was very nervous because his mother was in the audience. It was her first time seeing him perform. No pressure, right? His performance was perfectly flawless and is the gold standard that others who cover it try to meet. Elvis' cover of the song is very good. Even though his health was failing his voice was strong and he did an excellent job. The Righteous Brothers don't have a big play list together, but what they do have is great. They split up for many years but eventually reunited to do concert tours. Bill Medly ( the skinny one) did a duet ( her name escapes me) and the song was a big hit...from the movie Dirty Dancing: I Had The Time of my Life.
He also does a beautiful cover of 2 other ballads, " Only You" and " For Sentimental Reasons "..His voice is absolutely mesmerizing..sings effortlessly ..and knows how to tell the story ..a rare vocalist indeed..🎶👏💙🙌💜
Best version hands down of this classic song! Absolutely loved the Righteous Brothers. Sadly we lost Bobby Hatfield about 20 years ago. He had a beautiful one of a kind voice. Home Free just did a great version of this song. And Austin Brown also did a very beautiful tribute of this song about a year ago.
There will never be another Bobby Hatfield RIP. I first heard this in 1965 and sounds just as good today. It was revived in 1990 in the movie GHOST. The Righteous Brothers are the greatest duo ever. Thx
The most masterful, perfect and effortless vocal I have ever heard ... he sings with the voice of an angel. So, so beautiful, and when he sings those 3 high notes to finish the song, you feel like he is soaring up to heaven!
Great observation about his face not really changing with those end notes - that's so true! He just hits those notes effortlessly. Very few are blessed with that amount of vocal talent - VERY FEW.
I was 15yrs old when this song came out and it still gives me the chills to listen to it. What a era for music the sixties was the best Rock & Roll, motown, British invasion ? Need to say more.
He does multiple voice inflextions with each word, if you try to follow it and practice it hundreds of times you still can't get it. And he made it look so effortless, this is nothing less than masterful! Maybe one of the greatest solos ever recorded imho.
This is known as one of the best, if not THEE best performances ever recorded LIVE. Righteous Brothers were so crazy popular on the radio and in Las Vegas, for decades...and they may be even more popular now, with internet, This is possibly the most listened to song in the world today. Last I saw..80 million views. Heavenly!!!
I listened to their song for 30 years in movies and the radio. Finally saw them on youtube doing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and I just pointed at the screen and announced to the family that was close, "That ain't The Righteous Brother's! Those boys are WHITE!" I'd lived my whole life thinking wrong! But their music sure is RIGHTEOUS!
After Bobby recorded the studio version, he said to the producer "I want another take. I can do it better." The producer said "No, you can't." Well, as it turned out, he COULD do it better.
I never get tired of hearing this song, and your comments are spot on. Bobby Hatfield's voice flows effortlessly, almost magically. Another of his solos I'd like to see you react to is Summertime -- very different than Unchained Melody but equally impressive.
A lot of production today is to cover up the fact that the so called artist has no or very little talent. In fact it’s probably the backup singers that are carrying the songs in 2023.
i love how Bobby Hatfield sang this. the Righteous Brothers were extremely talented. i have watched many reactions to this beautiful song Unchained Melody and i am telling you that i love and appreciate your reaction probably the best, because you are real and not overly dramatic. i feel you are most sincere. thanks!
Back in 1965 a lot of us were headed for Vietnam. Unchained Melody was dedicated to a lot of wives, and girlfriends before we left. Best solo performance ever.
As much as it’s surprises me that there are still people that haven’t heard this song, it also brings me so much joy to see people learn about these legends. It’s a simple pleasure!
Lovely reaction! He sang that with a 'house band', no auto tune or enhancements and didn't screw his face up to hit notes, just seemed effortless, simply amazing.
You say house band but those musicians were the best. A lot of the recordings from the 60’s replaced the named band with house musicians on the record because they were better.
I never get tired of hearing this song by Bobby as I’ve also heard it live myself! Back in the day…love the reactions of those today who truly get it! TY Brother! ❤❤❤
Of every first reaction on any channels... The Righteous Brothers are #1. I grew up with their music and at age 70, I appreciate their amazing, beautiful voices and talents!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Bobby Hatfield on his own is amazing. But Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley together -- the Righteous Brothers -- are pure magic. Check out their big breakout hit, "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'," which is on TH-cam in a black-and-white video. And their hit from a year later called "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" is also excellent. That's the sound they're most known for. But their first hit was one I don't think any reaction channel has done yet. It was written by Bill Medley, and it's called "Little Latin Lupe Lu." More of a rock 'n roll song. There's another hit they had that Bobby sang solo called "Ebb Tide." Unfortunately, there are no live performances by Bobby of it on TH-cam (don't be fooled, there's one by a guy who looks and sounds a lot like Bobby, but it's not him). But the studio recording is on TH-cam, and it's excellent.
I love watching your reaction to this song that I heard 60 years ago. I was there and Bobby Hatfield still makes this old lady cry 😢 ❤ no one can top this. RIP BOBBY 🙏
Thanks for sharing this wonderful performance. Bobby's voice control and especially his effortless sliding of scale makes a difficult song seem magical. You are correct with his facial expressions, Bobby knew he was knocking it out of the park. Easy Peasy for a great artist.
Loved that you showed respect. Your intro showing the two Righteous Brothers together, reflecting that there are two singers with one singing a solo. Showcasing them on a popular tv show of the era. You made the effort to present the Total Package. Thank you.
Great reaction! Another fantastic song by the Righteous Brothers is You’ve Lost that Loving Feeling. Even though the taller one’s voice is much deeper, they compliment each other perfectly.
One of the greatest performances ever

Last I saw..80 million views. Heavenly!!!
I listened to their song for 30 years in movies and the radio. Finally saw them on youtube doing 'You've Lost That Loving Feeling' and I just pointed at the screen and announced to the family that was close, "That ain't The Righteous Brother's! Those boys are WHITE!" I'd lived my whole life thinking wrong! But their music sure is RIGHTEOUS!
Smooth like honey, still brings a tear to my eye.
Best live performance ever!
A thing of beauty is a joy forever
The best performance of this song ever, including their studio version.
After Bobby recorded the studio version, he said to the producer "I want another take. I can do it better." The producer said "No, you can't." Well, as it turned out, he COULD do it better.
Ive watched this performance so many times and it gives me goose bumps every time.
I never get tired of hearing this song, and your comments are spot on. Bobby Hatfield's voice flows effortlessly, almost magically. Another of his solos I'd like to see you react to is Summertime -- very different than Unchained Melody but equally impressive.
this is guaranteed to melt the hardest heart
Such vocal control... It's like he's singing from soul to sound.
Pure natural talent!
No production, no auto-tune, just all talent and voice live.
A lot of production today is to cover up the fact that the so called artist has no or very little talent. In fact it’s probably the backup singers that are carrying the songs in 2023.
i love how Bobby Hatfield sang this. the Righteous Brothers were extremely talented. i have watched many reactions to this beautiful song Unchained Melody and i am telling you that i love and appreciate your reaction probably the best, because you are real and not overly dramatic. i feel you are most sincere. thanks!
60 year old guy here., It's great to see a young guy appreciate true talent from the past.
I saw them in person when I was 16! Over 5 decades ago!
I’ve listened to this since I was 12, I’m now 65, it never gets old. That’s a mark of great music.
Ok! Your reaction is a true addition to this experience!
Nothin' but raw talent. No autotune, no electronic correction, just pure, raw, music.
Bobby Hatfields Mother was in the audience for this show. He was really trying to kill it. I think he succeeded!
I never get tired of hearing this song by Bobby as I’ve also heard it live myself! Back in the day…love the reactions of those today who truly get it! TY Brother! ❤❤❤
He puts such passion into it, you feel that the song is personal to him. Amazing breath control. So beautiful and romantic.
Always been one of my favorite songs
He had a cold that day and still nailed it and beyond!❤️
I love watching your reaction to this song that I heard 60 years ago. I was there and Bobby Hatfield still makes this old lady cry 😢 ❤ no one can top this. RIP BOBBY 🙏
Today's vocals can learn from both of them instead of relying on fake auto-tune. They are the real deal and learn from it.
My favorite since I was a child listening to my Papa's vinyl 💖
His voice is like butter. Effortless and soulful. Blue Eyed Soul!
