Bobby is NOT singing falsetto at any point in this song. He is simply singing high, because he had such an amazing range. Also, as others have mentioned: 1965. Live performance. No autotune, no sophisticated audio filters, no retakes or overdubbing. Just pure, raw, disciplined talent. I wish we had music and singers like this today.

Bobby Hatfield died at age 63, 20 years ago. I grew up with this music. I was a school music teacher. He and Bill, the other RIghteous Brother, were on tour. Bobby died in a hotel room in Kalamazoo Michigan where they were going to perform, but he died before they were to go onstage. I ha d almost bought tickets to the show, 50 minutes away from my house. But I was too busy. On the way to teach school the next morning I heard the news on the radio and I cried... it just hit me hard....knowing the students at school would have no idea who this man was. What a loss....

Some did but other's didn't. My husband's last letter asked if I was still his and please wait because he'd be home but he never made it like so many others. Love this was done live on the Andy Williams show in Oct. 1965 with the backing of Andy's orchestra, no autotune or electronics other than a mic to aid his voice. Done for the first time in front of his mother, while Bobby was sick & he was having terrible stage fright. While I went to the show to see the Osmonds (who didn't appear) I fell in love with Bobby's voice with this song, felt like he was singing just to me. Greatest live performance I have ever seen! People comment on why there is no audience noise during this performance. Part of that is because the studio didn't want noise during the performance & part I believe was because his voice had people enthralled.

You are one of the rare reaction channels that gave props to the beautiful and mesmerizing arrangement of this Alex North composed song with Lyrics by Hy Zaret (1955). The NBC Studio Orchestra from the "Andy Williams Show" (1965). Arranged what I considered the best version of this song ever! The Violins and Strings Sections along with Horns gave this song an even bigger feel to it. And add to it one of the greatest Counter Tenor voices in Rock & Roll history, in Bobby Hatfield of the Righteous Brothers. And you get an Instant Classic. This (Live) performance has been considered as one of the greatest performances in television history. Great response to one of the greatest live performances ever!

This song has been covered dozens upon dozens of times. Bobby Hatfield's performance here is the quintessential rendition. It originally appeared in a 1955 movie, Unchained. It's sung by a prisoner who is pining over ("lonely rivers...") whether his wife will wait for him to complete his sentence ("time goes by so slowly" and "wait for me, wait for me").

He always was nervous about performing in general, not about hitting any note. He would perform on an empty stomach to avoid vomiting before going on stage.
If he thought he wouldn't be able to do that ending (which he did with perfect opera technique), for whatever reason, including the fact he actually had a cold at that time, he would have skipped it rather than embarrass himself live on national television.
He said that right before he started to sing he thought he was going to faint. He was extra nervous here because his mama was there (she's sitting behind him). He said he was aware of her being there the entire time. That it was like when he would practice at home.
      Okay, I'll stop rambling now.

This beautiful song was given a new lease of life thanks to the film Ghost, which would have introduced it to people who may not have been aware of it. Easily the best Unchained Melody, despite it being covered constantly. It was played in the movie Ghost in a dramatic scene, and it was Bobby singing it. Your reaction was as perfect as Bobbie's performance, and I had not heard this song either, until I heard a reaction to it on TH-cam. bobby is a counter tenor, that's his natural voice when singing high notes not forced like a falsetto

One of the best live performances ever recorded. The ending though, is not falsetto. Thats his head voice, and no one but a countertenor can reach that. I saw somewhere that his band mate, Bill told him not to try that live because if he messed it up even a little it would ruin everything. Bobby was like, nope I'm doing it. That night he had a head cold and both his mother and father were in the audience listening to him sing live on stage for the first time. Massive stakes and he knocked it out of the park with ease.

Check out both "brothers" in You'll Never Walk Alone. Bill Medley (the other 'brother') is a superb baritone whose voice mates magically with Bobby's tenor/contra tenor voice.

Mmmm. So glad I was living in that time and heard this on the radio quite often. The duo was extremely popular and adored. Seeing this again was a real treat. So many good singers back then and such good music. It was beyond awesome. Was surprised and pleased that your reaction was printed as you went and there were no interruptions to the performance. Thank you for that.

There have been a number of singers who have performed it including: Roy Orbison, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Hibbler, and please forgive me two others in the 50s which I cannot remember. However, I think if all of them were in the audience that night when Hatfield performed it, they would have all stood up and applauded his performance.
