Installing a 2.5" Lift on Our 2018 Jeep Wrangler JLU Rubicon - How To

  • Okay, so most of you who have seen my previous JL videos know that the only complaint we have thus far is the clearance height. Although the 35s have helped, we've still done a lot of belly sliding and banging. So we finally opted to install a 2.5" lift!
    Again, keep in mind that the lift is NOT needed to clear 35" tires. We're opting for a lift simply to clear larger obstacles.
    With that being said, our goal was to find the most affordable lift that we could, which happened to be Rough Country's 2.5"lift at a whopping $175, and put it to the test!
    We're genuinely curious if the more affordable option can withstand the beating we generally force on our "Stepchild" (aka our Jeep). We were pleasantly surprised to find that the kit and the included hardware were good quality (the only possible exception being that the shock extension brackets seem a bit on the thin side). But we'll know soon enough if it can handle our type of fun!

    I really appreciate this video. When I bought my JL back in April, I was looking at lift kits. This video sold me on the Rough Country kit. I had it ordered and installed that week. My Jeep runs great ! Not only recommended this kit to others, but became a subscriber to your videos, and tell others about you 2. Love how you 2 have so much fun doing what we all do, Jeep. Keep up the fun !!!

    Thanks for sharing your lift install. Really like the new stance. Looking forward to your next video where you test the new setup. Kevin you are blessed to have a lady who loves Jeeps as much as you do. My wife of 32 years drives a 2018 JLU Rubicon in Granite Crystal. We got it one month ago today on Feb. 16th. so it is our first month anniversary. We love our new Wrangler we traded my wife's 2014 JKU Sahara in on the new Rubicon. I drive a 2012 JK Sport S.

    • @MEDEDOME
      @MEDEDOME 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can't agree more Kevin. The new redesign on the Wrangler is fantastic. My wife likes it a lot better then her 14 Sahara. I really like the styling ques from days past like the tip in the grille like the YJ and TJ, the headlights pushing into the seven slot grille like my dads old 71 CJ5. The flat dash reminds me of the YJ and CJ Jeeps. There is so much to like and the drive with the 8 speed auto brings out more potential of the 3.6 liter. So it was a no brainer buying the new model even if its a first year model. Thanks again for sharing your experiences with us You Tube Jeep lovers.
      Gary

    I look forward to seeing how it performs with the lift. I have had an AEV spacer lift on my JK, with 33's, and I've done lots of trails, including some in Moab, and put over 80k miles on it with no issues. I put the Mopar lift on my JLU, and it is great, but they are working to fix the dreaded driver side spring bow. Mine isn't touching the bump stop, but it does need a fix, which Jeep tells me is coming. Anyway, you avoided all that with the spacer lift and saved a BUNCH of money. I'll bet it performs just as well.

I bought this same kit for her JL and also thought removing the driveshaft was a bit crazy. Did you guys get through the install without removing it? I know on the JK, I've never removed driveshafts to install a lift. Thanks for the videos! Keep them coming!

    I am not familiar with whether or not the Rubicon’s auto sway bar disconnects are only for the front or both front and rear sway bar. If not for the rear , I highly recommend the Steinjager rear sway bar disconnects, you will not be disappointed in how easy it is to disconnect/reconnect the rear sway bar (zip tie the sway bar up, two most important items for any Jeeper to carry off road are zip ties and duct tape, in my opinion)!

    I installed the exact same lift on my Rubicon JL, I did a lot of research and the consistent complaint was the rear sway bar link will hit the shock on full articulation droop. I measured the stock Rubicon sway bar links they are 9” eyelet to eyelet, the ones they gave me in the kit was a inch shorter. The actual lift in the rear spacer is 2”, so links need to be 11” for spacer lift. I ordered Rubicon Express 11.5” eyelet to eyelet rear links for JK, worked out perfect, even got sway bar up another 1/2” to further it away from shock at full droop. Please measure what your rear sway bar links are that you have with the kit and make sure they are at least 11” eyelet to eyelet or you will experience rubbing on the trail, no fun. Just trying to help with what I learned about the Rough Country spacer 2.5” spacer lift.

    Great channel. I understand from your comment that you don't need a lift to clear 35's for on-the-road driving, but how about off-road. Did you find that a lift or other mods were needed to avoid rubbing off-road with 35's?

    Whats the price difference from that lift kit to the Jeep lift kit? Seems like the Jeep lift kit with the fox shocks would be a better option unless price is a huge concern. But after spending $53000 on a Jeep, price shouldn't be a factor.

    • @LiteBrite
      @LiteBrite  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Stuka87 We think that perhaps some of it could be that we torqued everything while the vehicle was up on jacks as opposed to after lowering back to the ground. May possibly have caused some slight binding and whatnot once we set it down. It does seemed to have softened up a bit after taking it through some trails today.

    • @Stuka87
      @Stuka87 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you had loosened the control arms, and torques them while the suspension was hanging, that will for sure cause the suspension to be stiffer. The bushing will eventual work themselves into where they should be.

Unlimited Wranglers not really keeping with the spirit of what Jeeps were meant to be in my opinion. How long and wide does can a vehicle get before we call it something else. Kind of like the Mini Cooper. Started out like what the name says mini. Now they run around with these extended four door versions and still call them minis hhmm. I can see the similarities can you?

      The 2" lift will take care of that. Besides, there are some advantages to the 4 door, that come with longer wheelbase. I've had 2 door Jeeps, too, and loved them, but my humble opinion favors the four door. Opinions are like....

      Good comeback to a 2dr vs 4dr comment. You're showing what a stock 35" 4dr JLUR is capable of doing when wheeling. Adding 2.5" of travel only helps even more. And you saved money and DIY'd the install. You two are no snowflakin' quitters...only rock-crushin' DOERS. Way to go, bro...we like that....keep it up cuz "isn't that what every girl wants?...an extra two inches?..." lol you folks kill me lol

      John....As a man ordering a 2 door, manual Rubicon soft top, I can say that if not for 4 door sales, jeeps might very well be GONE by now....As a veteran, jeeps aren't used for their original intention, not really...Let's just all enjoy our jeeps, regardless of wheel-base or doors.

      Not a hater. I love all vehicles that can get out and get dirty. Great this couple can enjoy each other and have something in common. Love the humor.
