If you watch the live version of The Chain from 1982 (and Silver Springs from The Dance concert film) you can see Lindsey and Stevie expressing all that pain right up there on stage. It's amazing how they can turn those emotions on and off in the service of their art.
I usually suggest experiencing the studio versions first, but in this case you nailed it. Watch these videos first to get the full emotional experiences of these songs.
That is what she needs to review. Awe is all I have for this band. I can’t imagine going through a painful break up as they were then continuing to work together, write about it, make an album, and tour it. Really?
1977, my college dorm on a Friday afternoon, every room with a turntable had their vinyl out, most with friends down the hall and snuck in beers.... the musical potpourii filled the floors, usually in preparation for heading to the college bars in town (18 was the drinking age in MN) - why is it still the music I'm drawn to? Because it is SO DAMN GOOD! - Fleetwood Mac, Boston, Hall and Oats, Peter Frampton, CCR, Foreigner, Kansas, Head East, Electric Light Orchestra, Eagles, Pablo Cruise, Steve Miller Band, Commodores, James Taylor, CSN, Heart, ABBA, Elton John, Aerosmith, Queen, Supertramp, Boz Scaggs, Bee Gees, Bread, Atlanta Rhythm Section, Bob Seger & The Silver Bullet Band, Pure Prarie League, The Floaters, KC and the Sunshine Band, Bay City Rollers... Music that has stood the test of time. I appreciate you "kids" enjoying it. Thank you.
This is one of the best selling Rock LPs of all time. It is simply a masterpiece from the first to last song: a concept musicians today can't even fathom. I was around 11 when this came out and trust me it had a LOT of stiff competition and yet still became a top selling album. For music, the 70s were the best. The story behind this LP is that band members who were in relationships with each other were having fall outs and the tension found itself into the music. The LP's 2nd side is masterful.
In the Classic Albums series, Rumors is one of the albums the covered. That series would break down songs with the folks involved and talk about how it was recorded and put together. You can hear some isolated harmony tracks and they blended incredibly well.
"When the rain washes you clean you'll know." In my case, the rain was age & maturity. When I think of what I did to other people while having my fun, it makes me want to cry! Sadly, the storm didn't come until I was in my 40s!
Now THAT'S how music is supposed to sound! Talented song writers, musicians and lyricists working together to create unique perfection. No need for 'sampling', autotune or drum machines.
Yes, Fleetwood is sporting two wooden, dangling balls, and no, the crass allusion is not lost on us. However, those balls are actually pieces of “lavatory chains” that Fleetwood ripped from a toilet earlier in his career. “In truth, I started off as a blues player. The whole ethic of a lot of blues music is slightly suggestive, might I say. And suitably, I walked out on stage with these two lavatory chains with these wooden balls hanging down, and after that, it just stuck,” Fleetwood said. The wooden balls became a perverse good luck token of sorts for Fleetwood, and they became a constant companion to his drum kit in subsequent performances.
There was a live performance I saw on TV once where they played Gold Dust Woman for over 9 minutes and at the end Stevie said, "they never let me play this song this long!!" It is her completely being herself.
Such a highly acclaimed album and it’s awards are well deserved. You will love the whole album. Go your own way is a hugely successful song off this album as well. Love your reaction
I love how you took time to recognize Mic Fleetwoods drumming. He is not only one of the greatest drummers ever, he was also th glue that held everyone together during the whole "rumors" tragedy, even when his own life and marriage was suffering as well.
Every radio station in those days was flooded with songs off this album for years they have incredible harmonies and lyrics. Great reaction thank you the whole album is fantastic.
Love your comments on these songs. I saw Fleetwood Mac live in August 1975 at the Oakland Coliseum Stadium. Robin Trower was the headliner, Then Dave Mason, Peter Frampton and then Fleetood Mac and Gary Dream Weaver Wright. What a super lineup. The concert was called The British Are Coming, or The British Invasion. Day On The Green put on my the great late Bill Graham. Wow. Saw the Mighty Led Zeppelin on A Day On The Green in July 77.. And in 1974 June I saw Crosby Stills Nash & Young on A Day On The Green, with The Band, Joe Walsh & Barnstorm and Jesse Colin Young. Another Gem! The 1970s Rocked big time.
Unforgettable nights with friends, smoking and drinking, listening to this album so many times we knew every note and word by heart. It seems like a dream to me now, such great beauty and such pure emotions. No regrets, just wonderful music to carry us through a life.
Lanie Gardner has the best cover of this song I’ve ever heard. As of now she has 53M views & it’s the cover that launched her singing career. She’s just in her room sitting in her bed singing & it’s absolutely wonderful! You won’t be disappointed if you want to listen.
I'm a long time fan of Fleetwood Mac. And of Rush as a side note. Being an amateur drummer, what strikes me about this song the most is that powerful baseline that just persists through the whole song. It sets the foundation and the mood through the whole song. And the drummer, Mick Fleetwood with that "thunder' crash cymbal. Ya.
Stevie Nicks was my huge celebrity crush thru High School. Her voice was soothing , sensual and beautiful. She could calm the oceans with her singing...
When the rain washed you clean you'll know ... That line to me is the most Potent. I thionk we all have our own little reasons & why's and how this song resonates with them. I sure wish we had gotten more of this era of Fleetwood mac before it crumbled in the early 80s
The Chain (the studio version for first experience) is a BANGER with imo the best bass line ever. John and Mick aren't the absolute best at their individual instruments, but are widely considered one of the very best rhythm sections in the business among musicians. One of my favorite bands and you won't find a bad FM song.
Fleetwood Mac started with a different line up in the 60s. Albatross was an instrumental released in November 1968. The piece was composed by Peter Green. R.I.P. Peter Allen Greenbaum (29 October 1946 - 25 July 2020),[1][2] known professionally as Peter Green, was an English blues rock singer-songwriter and guitarist. As the founder of Fleetwood Mac. Mick Fleetwood drummer and John Graham McVie (born 26 November 1945) a British bass guitarist. He is best known as a member of the rock bands John Mayall & the Bluesbreakers from 1964 to 1967 and Fleetwood Mac since 1967. His surname, combined with that of drummer Mick Fleetwood, was the source for the band's name.
Stevie Nicks said the opening lines "Now here you go again/ you want your freedom/ who am I to keep you down" were written from Lindsey Buckingham's POV. Stevie wanted her freedom. The cover is Mick Fleetwood (drummer & co founder of the band) not Buckingham.
This is one of my relax kick back and chill album choices when you just want to have music going while you cook a nice meal and gather with some friends chatting sharing some wine I can dance around the kitchen listening to this I know every word of every song on this whole album. Also takes me back to my teenage and early 20's years very nostalgic. Thanks for the ride today just wonderful. As always your ride or die forever Eyyyyy Ooooo
Beautiful reaction , Stevie Nicks sang a song back in the day when I would travel in Southern California when I was Serving in the Marines and I never hear anyone react to it After The Glitter Fades
The era that this album was released in was so packed with amazing bands and music that the competition was fierce. AC/DC, “Let there be Rock”, David Bowie, “Low”, Eric Clapton, “Slowhand,” The Clash, self titled debut album, “The Clash,” Elvis Costello, “My Aim is True”, Electric Light Orchestra, Foreigner, Peter Gabriel going solo after splitting from Genesis…. There was so much great music exploding onto the scene at that point it was amazing. And that’s just 1977. People get excited about the over-programmed, auto-tuned, synthesized music that is released now but they don’t understand what they’re missing.
This song takes me back to summer of 76- it is like a time machine. Remember what is was like to be young and exploring life with the soundtrack of FM radio. This was a time where the music was crafted with people who were masters on their instruments, before digital, before MIDI. You can feel Stevie Nick's heart pouring through "Dreams" deeply connecting with her passion and longing! What amazing music- thank you Rosalie for sharing this with us with your insights and wisdoms
I grew up with this album on road.Trips for decades arguably one of the best albums ever. Please put all of them on TH-cam so I can see your reaction.I just subscribed your love every song
Saw Fleetwood Mac at Robertson Gym (basketball gymnasium) in Santa Barbara in 1976, during release of their debut album post exit of Bob Welsh. Incredible, next time I saw them was during the release of Rumours in a at the UCSB stadium 30k people,
A great analysis of the lyrics! Appreciate that you have the lyrics so you can get the message that these artists were trying to convey. You have so many more Fleetwood Mac songs to discovery.
It's a great song. From a musical standpoint, really surprising that it has quite a QUICK pace of 120bpm for a ballad type song. Lindsey's guitar work is unbelievable as are Stevie's vocals. They caught lightning in a bottle.
Bought this on cassette as a teen , album and then CD later . As well Stevie's solo stuff . I also love Christine McVie and her solo stuff . Two of the best female singers.
Dear Rosalie, meanwhile I ve watched several reactions from yourselve, and your journey is a really beatiful crossover through all genres, and thats sooo fascinating, and you really find the beauties, wonderful. And then you re sittn there, you share, you are so open, and brave, and woundable and honest and pure, thats my impression when I see and hear your expressions and your reflections of what yu ve heard. You are a really beautiful humen being, cause you are brave enogh to share your spontanious and honest feelings and thoghts. I wish you all the best, keep on rockin, Umarmung!
You should research the story behind the making of the album. All the members were at logger heads with marriages and love affairs falling apart. All the songs reflect this.
Oh how I love FM so much. I am a HUGE fan. Also, Stevie Nicks has been my musical idol since I was 14. That is 40 years of loving this woman! This is my favorite FM song. Written by Stevie Nicks and the only #1 hit they've ever had!
Rumours is just a magical album. Didn't care for it as a kid. I just wanted to listen to Led Zeppelin. Thought this music was boring. Now I get it. My opinion of Led Zeppelin though, never changed : )
After almost 50 years you can still drop the needle anywhere on this album and immediately be in the vibe, grooving to the magical sound. Led Zep never was as good as people thought they were, like Rush that way. Every Zep song I have heard covered better by female collabs.
You did an amazing job of breaking down this song lyrically and musically... I grew up with this music of the 70s and really it is the greatest decade of music in terms of pop and rock and many different styles...
This is such a unique song... it's happy, but at the same time it's sad... so many influences in this whole album... the cool thing about them at this time, is they were all song writers.. but they had no ego on this album.. they would write a song, and put it on the table, and let everyone offer their own sounds to it. That's how it was on every song on this album. Each song had its own writer, but every song had everyone's influence... very cool. 😎
I just love your analysis of all your reactions! It gives me so much more perspective not only of the song, but the practical application to other lifetime situations! Thanks so much!
I love this song. I remember when I first heard it on the radio in my mom and dad's station wagon while driving around the area where we lived. I was only 17, and this song turned me onto a whole new style of music. I had been listening mainly to hard rock and roll like Van Halen, Kiss, Styx, and Molly Hatchet, and I thought to myself "there's no guitar solo in that, but that's good".
Greetings from Scotland! Great song! I've been a lifelong fan of Fleetwood Mac and I love Stevie Nicks voice! Sadly she cancelled her show in Glasgow yesterday, just hours before she was due to take to the stage due to a leg injury. Hope you're OK Stevie! Get well soon!
The man on the album cover is not the bandmate relationship that she was writing and singing about. To see the tension play out on stage with her ex Lindsey Buckingham (guitar) watch the live version of Silver Spring from the Dance concert. You'll love it ✌️
One of my favourite albums of all time. FYI, the dude on the cover is the drummer Mick Fleetwood, and was not the one in a relationship with Stevie - that would have been Lindsay Buckingham. Pre Fleetwood Mac, (or before they joined the band), they had their own gig called Buckingham Nicks. They weren't the only breakup within the band - John and Christine McVie were also having issues. I could go on, but there are literally hours and hours of documentaries re FM, so if you're interested, I'd go that route. 😎☘️
Don't read too much into the album cover. That is Mick Fleetwood and Stevie Nicks - Stevie was actually in love with the lead guitarist Lindsey Buckingham, who is not in the shot.
I am mainly into hard rock and metal, but this is one of the best albums of all time IMO in any genre. There's not a bad/filler song on it really. So glad you are discovering them and enjoying it.
This song from 1977 enjoyed a resurgence a few years ago when a tiktok video of a guy on a skateboard sipping on cranberry juice went viral and inspired countless copy cat tributes (including from original Fleetwood Mac band members). The original: th-cam.com/users/shortslcWA2wEFkeY?si=7-Rw8bwLRypRb3FH (The story is he was on his way to work when his truck broke down so he decided to skateboard the rest of the way.) Some copies: th-cam.com/video/tKkNuAJBo-w/w-d-xo.htmlsi=vWuE3Faj8vEZdXPw
This was the breakup ballad from Stevie about Lindsey. His song about her is Go Your Own Way. I imagine the pain they would feel would be akin to Tony playing Gwen’s Don’t Speak (No Doubt-Tragic Kingdom).
You should listen to more of the tracks on the album, the entire thing is a masterpiece of music. Fleetwood Mac was unusual in that it had TWO really great lead singers, the other was Christine McVie.
Nice reaction. You should back up and listen to Stevie and Lindsey's early work. The album is called "Buckingham Nicks", Released in 1972/73. It was a complete commercial failure at the time but is now a legendary album. If you were to take a gander at that album I would suggest listen to "Crying In The Night" or "Crystal", both written by Stevie. Good for us that Mick Fleetwood bumped onto their music.
A lot of great music on that album though I think the standout is Frozen Love. Such a shame they could never get their act together and re-release even if just digitally on streaming.
@@caps689 I have read that Frozen Love was the song Mick heard at a studio that got him talking to them about joining FWM. The sound of Fleetwood Mac that would become famous is in the style of this album.
Had Rumors and the Buckingham Nicks album - analyze that album cover, still think of it whenever they are mentioned. You can see it's intense. Actually saw the Peter Green setup at a festival in SW New York in the 60s but didn't know who they were. My friend who was a drummer talked me into driving there mostly because Ginger Baker was playing with Fili Kuti. I definitely knew about Baker. Have some photos from then.
RE: Balls Mick's WC pullchain balls comes from early FM when they started out (late 1960's) with a different line-up (which has changed often over the years) and were very into phallic imagery (like young kids tend to be).
The most popular song on one of the most successful albums of all time and, "I think I've heard this..." Wow, the young never cease to amaze me with their uh, lack of perspective. Yes, we did have life before you arrived knowing everything.
On the album cover, I always thought their hands were connected to, but there are not. He is holding a crystal ball before her; both of her arms are swept back. I only noticed decades after first seeing, and owning, this album.
On the lighter end of their chemistry spectrum there's Angel 1979 live in St Louis. There's also a fun Second Hand News from 2004 Boston.
That is what she needs to review. Awe is all I have for this band. I can’t imagine going through a painful break up as they were then continuing to work together, write about it, make an album, and tour it. Really?
😮 Who said they turned it off. They managed to cover it up sometimes, but that pain stays for a long time.
After 47 years, Rumors is still moving new listeners.
very solid album. I bought my first personal copy in about 1984 and was a bit surprised by how positively many of my HS Senior classmates reacted.
Stevie Nicks has such a unique and beautiful voice; one of a handful of vocalist who you recognize from almost the first note.
*Almost* every song on this album is one of their Greatest Hits. It's just incredible.
Christine McVie . The bass player John's wife was a fabulous singer and pianist . RIP Christine ❤️
Christine - just a beautiful, pure angelic voice. A beautiful person inside and out. Can’t believe she’s gone 😢
The harmonies between Stevie, Christine and Lindsay were simply beautiful.
In the Classic Albums series, Rumors is one of the albums the covered. That series would break down songs with the folks involved and talk about how it was recorded and put together. You can hear some isolated harmony tracks and they blended incredibly well.
One of many of Stevie Nicks songs that makes me melt... She is in my world the greatest of all time.
Mick Fleetwood , one of the MOST UNDERRATED Drummers
Not by those who actually know about drumming.
Also an underrated restaurant proprietor!
Everyone in that band was top notch.
Him and John McVie are a magical rythym section.
This song has some of the most tasteful drums I've ever heard
"When the rain washes you clean you'll know." In my case, the rain was age & maturity.
When I think of what I did to other people while having my fun, it makes me want to cry!
Sadly, the storm didn't come until I was in my 40s!
i want to believe it's never too late for forgiveness and redemption. won't be the same. we can't undo what's done. but you can start over.
we don't know what we have till it's gone. But we live and we learn
Lindsey was a superb arranger/producer. He turned the other songwriters' songs into marvelous confections.
I was in high school in the 70s, and this song played a lot on the radio .
Now THAT'S how music is supposed to sound! Talented song writers, musicians and lyricists working together to create unique perfection. No need for 'sampling', autotune or drum machines.
Exactly, seems to be a lost art.
The wooden balls became a perverse good luck token of sorts for Fleetwood, and they became a constant companion to his drum kit in subsequent performances.
Rumors MY TOP 5 ALBUM EVER .🌹
I adore "GOLD DUST WOMAN!" Its dark and haunting....
My favorite on the album as well.
There was a live performance I saw on TV once where they played Gold Dust Woman for over 9 minutes and at the end Stevie said, "they never let me play this song this long!!" It is her completely being herself.
The live version of Rhiannon from 1976, great performance and shows why we’re so captivated by Stevie.
Rumors is one of the few albums where I love EVERY song. Stevie is amazing, but Christie’s voice is lovely
Stevie’s voice is just too good.
Every radio station in those days was flooded with songs off this album for years they have incredible harmonies and lyrics. Great reaction thank you the whole album is fantastic.

As soon as you learn about the back story to this song, the true artistry of this band unfolds.... beautiful
Unforgettable nights with friends, smoking and drinking, listening to this album so many times we knew every note and word by heart. It seems like a dream to me now, such great beauty and such pure emotions. No regrets, just wonderful music to carry us through a life.
Easily top 25 all time rock albums, and that list doesn't have a lot of room for bands like this, yet here they are. Nobody can deny it.
"Go Your Own Way" and "The Chain" are incredible, so to quote the title of song 4, "Don't Stop". 😁

I have an absolute treasure trove of 'old guy' good stuff for your review channel. From an intuitive 'quirky' viewpoint.
🤗 Blessed to see Stevie Nicks inducted (2nd time as a Solo Artist) in to the RRHoF! Her & Janet Jackson on the same night! 🤩 Brilliant! 🥰🐰

Got this album as a kid for Christmas... the making of this album is interesting... what an amazing timeless piece of work/art.
The-drum lead in before every chorus is brilliant.
One of the cleanest, leanest, and most perfect drum performances ever.

You’re one of the most insightful and intelligent reactors on TH-cam. Great job.
Now you need to do the live version of “Rhiannon” by Fleetwood Mac on the tv show “Midnight Special”.
I grew up with this album on road.Trips for decades arguably one of the best albums ever. Please put all of them on TH-cam so I can see your reaction.I just subscribed your love every song

You should research the story behind the making of the album. All the members were at logger heads with marriages and love affairs falling apart. All the songs reflect this.
Stevie is definitely one of a kind. Mick Fleetwood is a freaking character, he puts on a great show live on those drums
Oh how I love FM so much. I am a HUGE fan. Also, Stevie Nicks has been my musical idol since I was 14. That is 40 years of loving this woman! This is my favorite FM song. Written by Stevie Nicks and the only #1 hit they've ever had!

Agreed! I thought it was a superb performance from Lanie - what a voice she has! (Greetings from Scotland!)
I just saw her about a week ago, tremendous cover her voice is captivating also but only one Stevie Nicks.
@@JDfromPhilly True!
WATCHING her sing is even better
I just love your analysis of all your reactions! It gives me so much more perspective not only of the song, but the practical application to other lifetime situations! Thanks so much!
This is on my short list of perfect songs.
Also, "Women, they will come and they will go.." Another double entendre.
I love this song. I remember when I first heard it on the radio in my mom and dad's station wagon while driving around the area where we lived. I was only 17, and this song turned me onto a whole new style of music. I had been listening mainly to hard rock and roll like Van Halen, Kiss, Styx, and Molly Hatchet, and I thought to myself "there's no guitar solo in that, but that's good".
what a beautiful song.
I truly appreciate your analytical reaction and superb vocabulary. Thank you!
This "might" be my favorite from Fleetwood Mac, but they have so many awesome songs
That Lydian mode progression.
Classic sound, with a great message.
The drumming you are admiring is Mick Fleetwood. One of the most underestimated drummers of the century.
The man on the album cover is not the bandmate relationship that she was writing and singing about. To see the tension play out on stage with her ex Lindsey Buckingham (guitar) watch the live version of Silver Spring from the Dance concert. You'll love it ✌️
You need to see the version of 'Rhiannon '' live You'll see Steve Nicks in all her dimension !! Astonishing woman !!
I love this song
Keyboardist Christine and bassist John McVie were also breaking up at this time after a 7 year marriage. (Album cover, Fleetwood's 6'7", she's 5'4")
Best album in history. Period.
I tend to gravitate to Christine McVie's leads with Fleetwood Mac, but this one is definitely a master work.
The album photograph seems to represent a harmony in solid stability with fluid grace. Like their music.
This song cemented Stevie as a vocal icon!
My first Album I have ever owned inherited from my father after his passing. This one is my all time favorite. Not a single bad song on Rumours.
Keep going on this album, every song is a treasure.
This was such a huge album. Thanks for sharing.
This song from 1977 enjoyed a resurgence a few years ago when a tiktok video of a guy on a skateboard sipping on cranberry juice went viral and inspired countless copy cat tributes (including from original Fleetwood Mac band members).
The original: th-cam.com/users/shortslcWA2wEFkeY?si=7-Rw8bwLRypRb3FH (The story is he was on his way to work when his truck broke down so he decided to skateboard the rest of the way.)

Alex is not kidding! If you’ve heard this album you want to share it with everyone with ears. Do yourself a favor and check it out!
Have some photos from then.
one of my favorite band ever
RE: Balls
Mick's WC pullchain balls comes from early FM when they started out (late 1960's) with a different line-up (which has changed often over the years) and were very into phallic imagery (like young kids tend to be).
The most popular song on one of the most successful albums of all time and, "I think I've heard this..." Wow, the young never cease to amaze me with their uh, lack of perspective. Yes, we did have life before you arrived knowing everything.
I just found your channel a day or so ago. You're great!
I like how you broke the songs lyrics and meaning into layers and in depth. Subbed, enjoyed you're energy
On the album cover, I always thought their hands were connected to, but there are not. He is holding a crystal ball before her; both of her arms are swept back. I only noticed decades after first seeing, and owning, this album.
