      I did about the same thing. I started learning English about a year ago.
      To do so, I decided to do everything in English: Set all of my video games to English, only watch youtube, movies or tv shows in English... . First, I struggled a lot (I remember myself after watching the first Lotr and realising that I understood almost nothing), but slowly and surely, I started improving and understanding more and more; nowadays, I understand more than 95% of what native english speakers say.
      I also used google translate a lot, as its a fast and simple way to translate words when you are watching something(and you are too lazy to use a dictionnary). My English is still far from being perfect, but, I'm pretty happy with the results.

    There are actually some nice bits of wisdom in here. But Language is naturally acquired through time, exposure, practice and work. So annoying that people perpetuate myths that you can be fluent in a second language in any given amount of time (a week, a month, 6 months...etc). Nobody wants to put in the time and almost everyone gets frustrated. Stay motivated and be patient and put in the effort and you'll be fine.

    • @benkenyon3677
      @benkenyon3677 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      The advice of "don't learn grammar, conjugations...etc" was TERRIBLE advice. I have to test people to determine their CEFR level and you need to know quite a bit of grammar to be B1 level. You need to have a working understanding of most of the tenses, which requires understanding conjugation, to be B1 level. Believe me, I do this for a living. P.S "Fluent in 3 months" is impossible (unless you're literally a genius at languages), that would require getting to B2 level. B2 requires knowing a LOT of grammar and a lot of vocabulary (a working vocabulary of at least 4,000 words or more, not including conjugated verbs as separate words). Not going to happen in 3 months.
      I do, however, agree that communication based around expressing yourself is great and you shouldn't get too bogged down in grammar.

    • @benkenyon3677
      @benkenyon3677 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Caleb I mean you cannot communicate at B1 level or above without learning grammar. Whether you do that inductively or deductively is up to you, but you absolutely need to know it. The advice of "just use the infinitive" and not learning how to conjugate at all is terrible.

    • @benkenyon3677
      @benkenyon3677 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Caleb Yeah, fair enough. I did take it as "just don't bother to learn grammar" on my first listen. I agree though, just focusing on grammar (especially in the early stages) is also a terrible idea. Learn to communicate first

    • @leslei4986
      @leslei4986 4 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Using I am, you are he is and such, you should be learning right away as for sentence structure people will correct you and you can learn as you go. I found that when I learned people were very forgiving and corrected me yet had no problem understanding me. Just for example, If I was learning English and I came up and said “time is?” Or “what time is now?” With my inflection you already know I’m asking a question and even though I’m no where near grammatically correct you know what I’m asking and Spanish speakers also can understand what you’re trying to say. The key is start using/speaking what you learn immediately. Find reasons to use the newly learned words. The more you speak and interact with native speakers the faster you will learn.

      Spanish conjugations are relatively easy though. I would want to learn them from the very start to train my brain to think that way. I am currently learning German as my third language, and I find conjugations to be the easiest part and essential to understanding the language. Other rules are much harder honestly.

    There are about 100, 000 words in the Spanish language . A fluent speakers needs roughly 5,000 words in their vocabulary to communicate. One month is not enough time to learn a language. There is no magic technique no silver bullet. If you want to learn a language you need consistent exposure to that language. It’s not impossible but it a takes time and effort and it’s not a decision you should take lightly because your time is the most valuable resource you have and you don’t know how much you have left. On the other hand learning a language can be fun and open up whole new worlds but people should stop pretending that there is a way to do it fast and with little effort.

      I'm guessing you still have 3 months left. Go on a website called memrise, then look for a course called 'Spanish not typing'. I've found it to be the fastest way to bulk up your vocab. Good luck!

      Oh also theres a TH-camr called 'pablo the polygot', he has a few videos called 150 phrases in Spanish, download it and put it on your ipod and just listen to it whenever your on the train or at work etc, it also seems to be a really good way to learn phrases, just by having them continually repeated in your head.

      yes you're right that's the key to learn something just do a lot of repetition and it will finally stuck on your head tha's why i say la práctica hace al maestro and another good thing you mentioned was the listening part that's the best tool to learn a new language by listening to it.

      That was a very interesting post, here are a few more tips on how to learn Spanish…
      Set realistic goals, don’t just dive in and say “I want to be fluent Spanish within 1 year”, give yourself short term goals which lead up to long term goals. E.g. Short Term Goal = “I want to learn all about this topic in 1 month” and Long Term Goal = “I aim to be able to speak about at least 12 topics within the next 12 months
      Make time, you will need to set some time aside, preferably on a day to day basis, so you can achieve your goal. I highly recommend blocking out actual time on your calendar every day and really commit to this. Think of it as an appointment with your doctor that you wouldn’t consider missing. That is exactly how you should treat this task. As little as 20 minutes a day is a great start.
      Immerse yourself in the language, meet Spanish friends, listen to the radio, watch a show on TV, and try to read the newspaper. Even if you do not 100% understand the content, keep it as a daily exercise and you will eventually make sense of it all. The other great news is this listening exercise is the only way to improve your accent. Your brain will process all the information and you will notice the improvement with time.
      Have a practice buddy, keep yourself motivated and accountable by practicing Spanish with a friend. It is always a good strategy to practice the language with someone who is fluent and non-judgmental. I have a friend who practices spanish with me and I practice English with her.
      (I learned about these and more from Alijha Language Course site )

      Vacations are expensive, not slow travel. If you move cities every 3 months or so (which I don't anymore), travel expenses (flights) are low. And living very well in most places are very cheap. For instance, Colombia $1.5k/mo, Thailand $1.2k, Bali $1.3k, Prague $2k.
      For (much) less than it costs you to live in the US or most of Europe, you could be doing the same thing.

      I use to have the exact same problem. Watch shows in spanish , listen to music in spanish, surround yourself with spanish and eventually you will understand. Take it slow though. I watched child shows in Spanish because they talk slower for children and it was easier to understand. I found songs I like in Spanish and listen to them nearly everyday. Watch telenovelas. I am currently watching one called Rubí. Now I have just about no trouble understanding spanish. Bottom line is , just listen to spanish everyday and eventually you will be able to comprehend. Hope this helps.

      I am very passionate about being fluent in Spanish, I figured I should learn and then teach Spanish to English speakers and teach English to Spanish speakers in foreign countries. It's a good way to travel the world and make memories so I figure it would be perfect. The only thing holding me back is the salary, I'm not exactly sure how much ESL teachers make. I am also interested in learning mandarin. Do you know mandarin?

    • @AzrentheLanguageNerd

      I do speak Mandarin, but I'm not 100% fluent. I'll be spending 2 months in China this fall though, so I should be pretty good at it by the time I'm back.
      For ESL teachers salary, I imagine it would depend on the country where you live, but worst case scenario you could always find your own students & make a living doing that.
      PS - do you have a Skype account, or a other way we could connect? If you're ok with it, I'd love to chat & hear about what your working towards! Also, I love meeting other fellow language enthusiasts haha.

      The person who suggested that has a valid point but its careful not to take it out of context. The biggest point is to get talking ASAP. As much as possible, as soon as possible. A lot of the grammar will be absorbed through communicating with native speakers. Think of it this way: a baby isn't held back by learning grammar. Instead, the start with one or two words, then a question, then a few more words. They will learn a lot of the language through what they hear and when they are corrected. It should be the same or else you are spending a LOT of very valuable time trying to memorize charts when instead you could be speaking and picking up a LOT more naturally. -- Full disclosure: I am an American and speak 6 languages. This "get talking asap" point can not be over emphasized. It is a HUGE deal maker or breaker.

      and english is your first language? cause any person that speak spanish as a first language can understand what he said , i speak spanish as a first language and i could understand every single word that he spoke, and i'm not from colombia, each latin country has their own vocabulary when speak but if you speak spanish as a first language you should understand whaterver that person say in spanish, that's what i think. hehe.

      It's important to note how much Mainland Spanish differs from American Spanish -- Mainland Spanish is much less formal, and is crazy filled with slang, and things that only a native would know.

    Fascinating. I have on and off studied/spoken Spanish for about 15 years, and it was still tough for me to understand the natives in this video. Suffice to say, I'm really impressed that you were able to learn words AND sounds sufficiently enough to have a conversation with such a short amount of time studying. Well done.

    Great documentary, Connor. You're very brave to make this and put yourself out there, which you did with this project. I really liked some of the aerial shots you did and the conversations with the locals. Fun stuff. Only comment is that the Skype interviews felt like they dragged on too long, but they have good information, so, I guess it's the matter of your POV. Good job!

    I know the struggle learning a new language I was almost fluent in French but lost it and can understand some Spanish but can't respond back in Spanish. In America we take foreign languages in schools but its not enough for us to be fluent in it. I was in South Korea for a year and children there learn other languages early and continue every year through high school. Korean youth sound American when they speak English this happened at a McDonalds in Seoul it was surprising.

    I can't find the sense to learn in that way as the guy who knows nine languages said. He said that you can say "yo leer mañana" I agree that a Spanish speaker is gonna understand but it's sounds awful. It's sounds like a Native American speaking

    • @StillRooneyStarcraft
      @StillRooneyStarcraft 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      It's easier to get across what you mean that way even if you sound like tarzan in the beginning when you use that method. This makes you less frustrated when you speak because you dont focus on technicalities and getting everything right. It sounds awful at first but it's a very good stepping stone because it makes you less ashamed to make mistakes, which is one of the main things that hold back language learners

    Awesome documentary. I tried hacking salsa and thought I'd be great in 6 months. Also went to Colombia for immersion after 3 months of dancing here in Bali. I did 2hr private classes a day, + solo practice, + watching videos of the master dancers, + listening to the music, and of course social dancing in the evening (real practice). After 6 months I was "conversationally fluent" on the dance floor. I wasn't amazing by any sense of the imagination, still looked like a gringo, but was passionate like crazy. Now 3 years in, have been social dancing every single day (few days missed only) since starting and am still learning a ton each day. Now going to Colombia again (pandemic permitting) and have studied your material and that of some other language hackers. Fantastic stuff. I've got myself set up for fluency in 3 months (I didn't have time for Spanish learning when I was in Colombia as my full focus was on salsa). Cheers for your work, loved it

      Same, Reading Spanish isn't so bad, it's just when they speak fast and the grammar - Spaniards can say a lot in just two or three words, sometimes you think youve understood what theyve said as you assume you know a word theyve said, but more often than not its totally different than what you thought.
