    A warning for everyone watching, make sure you don't watch Spanish shows with ENG subtitles if you're trying to learn from them. It's been shown to not help in any statistically significant way. Watching in spanish with spanish subs is really useful though, and has been empirically proven.

      What if I’m a beginner and can’t fully understand without subtitles in ENG?

    • @TwenOalley
      @TwenOalley 4 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      Another piece of advice I can give is minimize the amount of "rules of thumb" you learn for things like "por vs para". sometimes they can be useful, but you don't have time to remember these things when speaking or listening in real time. Just see a word in context, read definitions/translations until you understand the sentence, or just read all the definitions of a word you're confused about. And eventually after you refrence these words enough times, and see them in action enough times, you'll develop a sense for things sounding "weird" or simply feeling correct. It's like how in english we'd feel weird saying "i'm an baseball player" and it might be confusing to a spanard why that's wrong, but eventually that person will just have to see the words a and an enough times to get the 6th sense for why that construction is incorrect, instaed of just remembering the grammar rules. There's simply too many grammar rules to remember, and they're broken too often for that to work.

      Also, download anki, and get a deck online that will drill you on conjugations, and do that for like 10 mins a day. and possibly a deck for sentences if you want, but I personally prefer just listening to people talk over sentence decks.

      also,also,also matt vs japan is the best language learning channel, "Luisito Comunica" is probably the best "real channel" to learn from because he deliberately uses very little slang, and talks very clearly.
      old auron play videos are my favorite to just listen to, but it took me over a year to understand all his jokes and wordplay

    I agree that "Destinos" is (was) a great series to learn Spanish. But a warning to young people, millenials, Generation Z, etc, it is way out of date! (No cell phones, big bulky laptops, etc.). If you can overlook that, it is a good learning tool - and free! And I think it would be a good review for intermediates and advanced learners as well as beginners. It's like a telenovela. Also, I think EXTRA would be good review for all levels.

    Okay, I hate telenovelas, but the trailer for “El Tiempo Entre Costuras” is deceiving; it’s not cliche like it looks lol It’s more of a miniseries with historical undertones. I binge-watched the whole thing in a day and I,again, didn’t perceive it to be like a novela and I am not a fan of tv, soooo...I think people should give it a shot!

      Telenovelas are common in Latin America, not in Spain. In Spain we have a lot of good tv shows and for all kind of public: Élite, Las chicas del cable, Vis a vis, Gran Hotel, El internado, Isabel, El ministerio del tiempo, El barco...

    In Spain there are no "telenovelas". TV shows can be more or less dramatic, but they are "series" not "telenovelas". You should have said that "El tiempo entre costuras" is based on a book with the same name, which I highly recommend. Greetings!

      +Angyliv, cierto, esas que has puesto lo son (y "Seis hermanas", también lo era) lo que sucede es que esas no se suelen ver en el extranjero (salvo en Italia) ni están en esta lista. De todas maneras, incluso esas, tienen algo que yo encuentro distinto al de las telenovelas latinoamericanas clásicas en su estilo (de hecho, siempre suelen ser de época). Las tres que hemos dicho, "Seis hermanas", "El secreto de puente viejo" o "Acacias 38", lo son.

      There was a Brazilian telenovela, "La esclava Isaura" that I enjoyed very much. At the time that I watched it, it was dubbed in Spanish (I don't speak Portuguese but I am fluent in Spanish and understand a lot of Portuguese, of course, having studied 4 years of Latin as a kid) and on youTube. Really well-done, and they did not sugar coat the issues surrounding race in Brazil during that country's era of slavery.

    Thank you for your recommendations. Actually, Extr@ Español is "NOT extremely similar to American show Friends". IT IS NOT. It is the Spanish language version of the show "Extra English". It is educational, spoken in very slow and simple Spanish. It was intentionally made for Spanish beginner learners. Friends is an "ENTERTAINING" American series in which people speak in extremely FAST and natural American English with many idioms, for general American adults, not for beginners. Though they are both good for language learning I know.

      "7 Vidas" era muy parecida a "Friends" en sus primer par de temporadas, pero después fue adquiriendo más una personalidad propia. Aunque no siempre a mejor, ya que tuvo el problema de que los actores iban y venían constantemente, por lo que no hay un reparto de personajes sólido.
      Pero de todas formas, no sé si es del todo buena para aprender español. Más que nada porque está llena de referencias culturales de la España de finales de los 90, principios de los 2000. Estoy hablando de menciones de personas famosas, referencias a programas y series de televisión, o incluso de anuncios televisivos (o comerciales) que nadie entenderá si no vivió allí durante esa época.
      Aun así, diría que merece la pena echarle un vistazo. Mucho de su humor se ha perdido, pero sigue mereciendo la pena solo por las interpretaciones de los actores, especialmente Amparo Baró y Javier Cámara.

    I wish people would use the term "Spanish-language" or "Spanish-speaking" instead of just Spanish. It really leads to confusion and prejudice. The term "Spanish" means related to Spain. When people often talk about Spanish authors, for example, they mention the likes of Gabriel Garcia Márquez, and I always have to tell them, no he's Colombian. This simple difference in the way we speak perpetuates ignorance and prejudice in my opinion.

    • @SethCorbinMusic
      @SethCorbinMusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      well, I see your point but "predjudice" is the wrong word. Confusing people by saying that they are Spanish instead of Latino does not foster prejudice. It's not prejudiced or disadvantaging to mistake someone as a Spaniard as opposed to being from another Latino country. That's not a judgment thing - at worst it might be confusing. As in, it's not like "I thought Gabriel Garcia Marquez was Spanish, but he's Colombian, and now I don't like him." That would be prejudice. But "I thought Gabriel Garcia Marquez was Spanish, but actually he's Colombian" just means that you were confused because someone labelled him as Spanish.

    • @SethCorbinMusic

      But yes, Hispanic or Latino and Spanish-speaking is the right description, since Spanish people are always from Spain.

      No Spanish is a general term for the language just like we don't make a distinction with Chinese eventough technically Chinese doesn't exist for there are different languages spoken in China but mandarin is what we mean when we say Chinese so it's just a difference of perspective. It's really a matter of knowing how a language is used and not what the dictionary says.

    Thank you for this! I haven't spoken Spanish since I've graduated 2 years ago and other than English (I am German) I find it very hard to keep up with it and not forget about it, since most things are in English these days. As a binge watcher I'd really love a second part on this and your review on "La casa de papel" and "Las chicas del Cable".

      Hello! A second part on this is a great idea, as many people have a lot of good recommendations! Thank you!
