I want to see both of these bands go at it straight up during football season when Southern is at there football season size and Dega is at the full size. You can tell that southern is in parade season size 13 Tubas they usually march 23. But they will never back down from a challenge and that's what i love about them the never give up of a marching band its the best feeling. Southern is the better band hands down in HBCUs. TC has what a lot of schools want which is much brass. But they are just noisy and loud.Not really musical.
TC won the who can play louder battle, but far as what matters SU won the quality of music being played. SU had a better sound period! TC sounded like a big high school band and that's not shade just being real.

In this video, Southern have a Sea of people in front of their band making it sound like they're playing behind curtains. you can't see the sections except the Tubas, TC played it smart to have the crowd at a distance not to smother their sound.. Don't know how many times i have to say. it don't matter if you have the Loudest band on the planet, it means nothing if you're not set up properly and having your horns being smothered by jammed up band members and an ocean of people. It's ok to want to impress the4 crowd but must always remember, what is seen on the internet is 1000 time more popular than what is seen in person in the crowd

This is a fight when you cant win with one technique you move to another su started hitting other bands with arrangements when everbody started overloading their program to get the sound, if you notice anything su arrangments produce the sound not the number of members check it out
I say southerns projection is way better idk if its the quality. But i do kno this being in band for 4 years in hs some bands sound sloppy up close. But southern had less people hang over and better notation. Dega is one of my favorite schools but they have sound and projection their weakness is clarity.
I'm from Ga we don't have any great HBCU bands anymore but Dega y'all gotta give them some respect for what they're doing in a short period. Can they keep it up that remains to be seen. You gotta like up n comers its good for the sport. I wish it FortValley State battling SU you like that!
TC was loud but that doesn't necessarily equate to power. The b-tone section stood out like a sore thumb. They could use some work on arrangements as well. They sound pretty good for a 4yr old program, but they can't yet match the musicality, balance, and overall power of SU's band. A lot of people are riding TC because their b-tones are so loud but listen to the parts that they play loud, a lot of whole notes and half notes. They are moving in the right direction, they could be a problem in 4-5yrs.

It really comes down to personal preference. In my truly unbiased opinion and only looking at the videos of this battle online I give it to SU. I give SU the win due to the complete sound of the band meaning they blended well and harmonized at a level I would expect from a collegiate band. Additionally, SU offered a greater diversity of selections that displayed their range of playing abilities better. I think last year's battle was much closer with SU winning by the skin of their teeth with the technical presentations. However, if I were to judge this battle on beating only I have to give the win to TC. However, they didn't have a polished sound and didn't harmonize well. The baritone carried them and then some, but their offerings were not very technical. Plus, I thought the stops pulled out by Haymer were a little unecessary and executed poorly from the red carpet to the mentioning of the key change coming up in I Wish I Wasn't. That's my opinion and figured I would state WHY I believed a band did better than the other. I just wish they were allowed to go at it like this at the Honda BOTB so there would be no excuses about size of bands, who marched X number of parades before the battle, crowd in the way, concert formation vs. Performing block and so on. Great job by both programs. Some of you really need to remember that this is a music program and higher education comes first, not a street brawl.
C'mon man, be real. Do you hear the blending and balance SU has, and Talladega sounds like every section trying to be louder than the other. Loudness doesn't mean better. Talladega way bigger, but SU doesn't stray away from their element because Dega is louder, they stick to the what they know, sounding like a well rounded balanced and powerful Collegiate band, not a high school allstar band. I love my city, but New Orleanians have become so accustomed to being loud, that thats all they base a band battle off of.

And both dands were great outstanding.,but in this video the guy recording this ,is closer to TC, if you listen to the other video you will hear and see a difference in both bands TC your not quite there YET and I did say YET keep working and growing SU look out. Because people are use to S.U. being super dominate, So any type of challenge constitutes a win. But in reality There are very few programs that can compare to the Jukebox; and T.C. is not one YET!!!!!!. But they are great for this type of environment where big and loud is the only thing that matters. T.C. is very good for a young program. but you all are comparing a Bose (S.U.) system to a LG. Louder doesn't mean better.. All my ppl go to Talledega and I don't have any that went or go to southern but Southern sounds way better. They can play more complicated arrangements, cleaner. Loud would mean something if A: they had the same amount of ppl present and B: if they were playing as complicated a melody. I do say tho, that the fact that battle is this close makes it seem like it's a southern loss.. Typically when one side starts arguing musicianship and "if we had their numbers", it is a key indicator that the other side came with more heat. SU has often been the bigger, more powerful band in meetups with a lot of other bands in the SWAC. It's funny to see that now, when the shoe is on the other foot, SU folks finally want to start talking musicianship. * sips tea *

I don't know what most people listen to when bands play. Clearly Southern was the better band, clean, technical, balanced, and in tune. Dega band has split personalities they are a mix of every swac band. They're out of tune, they play watered down music, and really not a challenging. They just play loud and soft with bad arrangements on some songs. y'all not completely bad it takes more to be an all around band than just big also playing the right notes is important. As small as Southern was they matched and surpassed y'all sound and was in tune most importantly. Next year I believe that y'all will mature more with sound and togetherness. Two different bands, two totally different sound qualities. I didn't do band in college after high school but I know overall sound has a sound TC can't match. Answer this, would you let TC put you to sleep? Their sound isn't sexy enough.
Okay after listening to this I have concluded that both schools sound very well. I personally like southern over any school any day, but honesty is always over preference. People can say what they want about TC but they are not only loud. Their intonation, articulation, and releases are better than southerns. Once again I love southern's sound as much as the next person. But year by year they continue to get sloppier and sloppier. Their song selections are awesome but TC wins it for me. Their releases are on point. And if u say they have no control your fooling yourself. Credit is due to anyone. Both bands are amazing programs. TC just happened to have sounded better in this face off.

Southern sound is more balance than Telladega... Southern sounds even better than Telladega... it sound like on the Telladega side that each section is fighting to be louder... it not about being loud its about have balance and quality notes... Southern arrangements are by far the best college arrangement's other than VSU in Virginia... people in the crowd talking all this junk and don't even know what music really is... especially the one talking about B tones, What ??, get you music vocabulary together before trying to judge a great college... that's not even southern whole band that is the traveling band... Loud isn't what win battles and competitions, quality is what wins them.... FYI this coming from a band student that's becoming a band director someday thanks !!!
I feel bad for SU wind section, they look soo sad bein back there lol. Personally, I'm proud of the progress TC has made in such a short amount of time. Not too long ago, this band was nonexistent. Now, everyone knows about them. They're kinda like the John Cena of HBCU bands. Like them or not, you can't deny what they have accomplished.
TC sounds like a high school all star band. B tones loud and wrong. Sousa phones don't all know the tunes. Trombones are the most controlled section and their pretty much non existence. All this take the L talk is funny on this particular post of footage. Most of you hugs must be from TC.

I graduated from JSU lol so no bias here. I also lived and worked in Lincoln, AL right by Talladega so nothing against them, just truth.

Typically when one side starts arguing musicianship and "if we had their numbers", it is a key indicator that the other side came with more heat. SU has often been the bigger, more powerful band in meetups with a lot of other bands in the SWAC. It's funny to see that now, when the shoe is on the other foot, SU folks finally want to start talking musicianship. * sips tea *

I don't know what most people listen to when bands play. Clearly Southern was the better band, clean, technical, balanced, and in tune. Dega band has split personalities they are a mix of every swac band. They're out of tune, they play watered down music, and really not a challenging. They just play loud and soft with bad arrangements on some songs. y'all not completely bad it takes more to be an all around band than just big also playing the right notes is important. As small as Southern was they matched and surpassed y'all sound and was in tune most importantly. Next year I believe that y'all will mature more with sound and togetherness. Two different bands, two totally different sound qualities. I didn't do band in college after high school but I know overall sound has a sound TC can't match. Answer this, would you let TC put you to sleep? Their sound isn't sexy enough.
Okay after listening to this I have concluded that both schools sound very well. I personally like southern over any school any day, but honesty is always over preference. People can say what they want about TC but they are not only loud. Their intonation, articulation, and releases are better than southerns. Once again I love southern's sound as much as the next person. But year by year they continue to get sloppier and sloppier. Their song selections are awesome but TC wins it for me. Their releases are on point. And if u say they have no control your fooling yourself. Credit is due to anyone. Both bands are amazing programs. TC just happened to have sounded better in this face off.

WHOA..... got some intonation issues Talladega..... great sound from su overall. dega is coming up but still got a ways to go.... but yes they are LOUD.... but then again I can get 300 middle schoolers together and be LOUD.... no slam against them... im just sayin.

Southern sound is more balance than Telladega... Southern sounds even better than Telladega... it sound like on the Telladega side that each section is fighting to be louder... it not about being loud its about have balance and quality notes... Southern arrangements are by far the best college arrangement's other than VSU in Virginia... people in the crowd talking all this junk and don't even know what music really is... especially the one talking about B tones, What ??, get you music vocabulary together before trying to judge a great college... that's not even southern whole band that is the traveling band... Loud isn't what win battles and competitions, quality is what wins them.... FYI this coming from a band student that's becoming a band director someday thanks !!!

I feel bad for SU wind section, they look soo sad bein back there lol. Personally, I'm proud of the progress TC has made in such a short amount of time. Not too long ago, this band was nonexistent. Now, everyone knows about them. They're kinda like the John Cena of HBCU bands. Like them or not, you can't deny what they have accomplished.
TC sounds like a high school all star band. B tones loud and wrong. Sousa phones don't all know the tunes. Trombones are the most controlled section and their pretty much non existence. All this take the L talk is funny on this particular post of footage. Most of you hugs must be from TC.
I hope the people making these dumb comparison of the two bands aren't future band Directors. If they're going to be band Directors, God help our kids.
