Hip Hop is killing marching bands. There is nothing to arrange anymore. Modern music lacks song structure conducive to marching bands.
Joe I'm going to have to agree with you 100% modern-day rap have no musical construction whatsoever therefore in my opinion it kind of makes some of the 5th quarters boring because all of the rap today is so repetitive.

I know this is an old comment, but I agree. The rap of the early 2000's was still serviceable with the offerings from "Outkast" and the like being especially conducive to full band arrangements. A lot of The current stuff is almost anti-melodic in structure making it almost impossible to identify when played by the band, usually necessitating extensive use of vocals to help clue the audience into what they are listening to. That being said I anticipate a Renaissance of sorts within the next decade that will reintroduce melodic elements (look at "uptown funk" as a Pop oriented precursor).

Mane I was in 9th grade when this happened, still one the best battles I’ve seen b/c ion care Whatchu say dega was wit smoke on they li debut. SU for the win but dega was throwing haymakers the entire battle n connecting. Crazy how this helped change the band landscape forever.

I have only seen TC a few times, and SU a ton over the years. I have to say that TC definitely held their own, and then some in this head to head with SU. For the tradition that SU brings to the fight, I have to tip my hat to TC in this one. I was really impressed with the product from TC, great job. The overall blend of TC was done well.

Nice battle but Southern won this battle and still reign as the Kings. TC good but they definitely need to work on their intonation issues. TC started out strong but they ran out of good songs after about 20 minutes. They started to play George Michael, Billy Ocean, etc. Also they write all their arrangements on that SU style and sound and that's why they get, it sound like SU all the time. I give TC props for trying to dethrone the reigning kings but they lost this battle. They still have a long way to go and it's not to late for them to work on their own style. They will never beat Southern at their own style. Good battle though. Thanks Garrett for your continued effort to bring us good videos of our bands. Appreciate you alot man.

Clearly TC is bigger which mean they should of been killing SU. However, they didn't kill SU. I will say they held their own. One way to settle this is to send them to the honda classic this year then see who is really holding it down!!!!!

I'm just going to excuse some of these comments on here that even suggested that TC blew out SU. True Band heads and people who ever marched in a college band knows it's not only by loudness which TC sounded horrible and sloppy and who gives almost all there Melody of their songs to Baritones? It's all about Balance and Southern have that. Mardi Gras is during spring semester and for college band that mean it's concert season so for most band it's not going to be a full band like Marching season.

TC dont have so many unison parts in their arrangements, every section has their own part through each song thrm boys playing! , southern uses alot of doubling between between the baritones and trumpets and uses bones almost as an auxiliary to hold out phrases or used as short staccato like notes through thr phrase. Both bands are playing their butt off but I gta big up TC for holdn like they did.

The problem with most SU faithful is that they simply refuse to believe that another band can rival them. In all fairness to them though, it very seldom happens,..including this battle. I've never heard of TC and even though they stood there ground I would hardly award them the win here. I'm by no means a Jukebox fan but will give credit where it's due. Also, it's easy be a loud, strong band. If they want to be considered on the same level as SU lets see them on the field to see what kind of halftime performance they can muster.

Southern lost when Talledega played Holy Grail 100 times better than them. It went all down hill after that and don't get me wrong cuz I love Neck but that was not the comeback for TC's Holy Grail.

Southern is in concert season in the spring. This was literally half of their band. They only had 8 baritones at this performance so of course Talladega was louder, and that also explained why Southern tired out at the end.. Not making excuses just calling a spade a spade.. Southern arrangement's were still better and Beyond won this battle alone to me.. How do you respond to Beyond with Thuggish Ruggish Bone?? Smh.. But anyway If Talladega was to ever run across Southern at full strength then it's curtains for them man. This battle is gonna happen again next month. Just wait on it.. Ok I was there live one of the best bands moments ever. TC was the crowd pleaser, very loud, B-tones were eating but its a difference between being loud and having power, balance, & blend. What ppl dont realize is that you can be louder than Southern but the way they shit is written YOU WONT WIN!!! Thats what JSU tried to do "OUT BLOW SU"....SOUTHERN have best arrangements in the history of HBCU thats why they been dominating the SWAC FOR SO LONG.... This was an awesome battle. And I must say there was no slaughtering on either side but su did give out a little towards the end. Before you idiots start bashing me I'll say first and foremost yes I was there yes I do have a degree in music ed and yes I played in a college matching band also btone and tuba (vsu). However I have to say over the years su has always been one of my favorite bands in the country and I thought they were in beatable. I think it's impossible to get louder than su but damn these cats came as close as one could get. Secondly musically there has always been a weakness that no one points out on su. Let them play a doing that doesn't require max power then they'll be exposed big time. Tc on the other hand to say this was a band that's in there second year omfg I hate to see them a few years from now if there program continues to flourish. And since I've moved to this part of the country Nola I make it my business to see su jus and asu every year. I now have to add Tc because of there madi gras performance. And for you Jsu haters the past 3 years Jsu has Molly wapped su. Su was the louder band each year but musically Jsu has been smacking them consistently. Best Sectional battles goes to the btones. Both bands btones were blowing however su was out done by a hair. Tubas Tc got that one too. I've never been a fan of su tubas but they do sound a little better after getting rid of the plastic noise makers. Bones very hard to say but both sounded awesome. And trumpets both were light due to over powered low brass sections. And to the idiot who said Tc trumpets were wack. Get some common sense. If you have 20 btones you're gonna need at least 40-50+ trumpets to be heard when the entire band is playing its loudest. In idiot terms look at a trumpets bell size and tubing compared to any other brass instrument To the whole note and half note comment most bands in the swac play a majority of whole notes and half notes to create a power block and chord. But anyway best battle I've seen since 01. Good job su and Tc keep up the good work.
