Looking at the first two songs tripping out to see Colleges battle in the same streets that New Orleans bands have battled in for Decades. What's even more a trip is two College Band Directors from New Orleans battling on those same streets, that in itself is history.

That third song by the Ocean...wow...that little part with the bones. Nice! This is the foundation of that sound. Sounds like the Ocean I remember from 1983-86 as a kid with more chord play.

Both the Ocean and Talladega have improved their tonguing, phrasing, and tone quality. They both sound unique and way more balanced. The Ocean is doing well with less than 20 trumpets...great tone in every section. Talladega, ya'll have improved your execution and balance. I don't hear loud wrong notes, etc. Yall are solid. Work more on tonguing. Ocean work more on tonguing when your trumpets go up in range. Both bands sound great and so unique.
Okay I wasn't gonna comment bc I'm a TSU alumnus but my God the ocean was on another level! Like the progression under Simmons

I'm a Jukebox Alumn and marched against a straight up beast of a band in the Ocean in the mid 80's.
I see a reemergence here. Great to see this HBCU Marching Band Culture rising up. Next up, the come back of Morris Brown although they are MEAC. Will be a welcomed scene.

Kinda hard to figure out a clear winner tbh. Langston clean asf, Txsu is very well groomed from this past season, Dega sound good asf for their size

They all sound good honestly. You can’t even pick a clear winner.
Ocean with the win , next season going to be a blood bath. The other two bands came with it especially LU , I was shocked. Mark Gordon doing a great job over there but didn’t expect nothing less he came from PV , the only thing I have to say about LU is those uniforms look to much like PV old Uniforms. Dega did what they always do. Overall all bands did well
Those TxSU girls shocked me and didn't come to play!
My honest take on the battle.
TXSU VS DEGA - TXSU W
Reason being, them boys in Texas built different. They sounded balanced even when cranking. Dega sounded like dega per usual.. I’m surprised to see a smaller band especially with it being mardigras. 7 euphonium is not the norm for dega. So you can honestly tell they have to do some recruiting and start to be open to letting older wiser directors come in and critique. If I were to grade them I’d give them a solid B- the sound was there but as usual the blend was off. Now Langston on the other hand …………… BOY……… them boys were ready. They sounded amazing nobody doing too much everybody sticking to they’re assignment and honestly that’s what wins wars. I see nothing but success and growth for them this upcoming season. The numbers have been getting larger every-time I see them which means they’re doing something right. Now TXSU VS LU TXSU - W
Again them boys built different Brian is doing an amazing job you can tell that they’re having fun and actually want to be there. I mean we all expected this from them with the director change this last past season. Lastly

Surprisingly and I know y’all gone hate it but …….. I kinda gotta give it to LU.
AGAIN. BALANCE BLEND SOUND DISCIPLINE AND READINESS Wins wars not just high firepower. However, I’m expecting dega to improve on discipline and musicianship this upcoming season with the recent retirement of they’re now ex- head band director. The younger staff that he hand chose and left behind will do great and I know they’re potential. Now, do I suggest hiring someone older with more wisdom and musical experience as associate or assistant?Absolutely. Nathan Haymer, Clarence Gipson, the director from Landry and other prestigious schools would be a great hire for them and would improve not just the quantity but the quality as a collegiate band.
No hate bro, i think this is spot on. This is impressively accurate. I feel the same way about Langston. I never heard of em but that size compared to that power and sound is nasty! Straight ridiculous! With a few more numbers they had this battle won. TXSU did come out on top tho, those Btones sumn serious and I heard those demons on trumpet. Dega Tpets did they thing too but those mellos got the w over the other bands to me ...nice observation

As a former 🌊 when I heard the first two songs I was like they sound like SU but when they got in battle formation they went old Ocean ignorant with control! Dega sound like a collegiate band with more control than they’d usually sound. Langston! Y’all definitely on my watch list. To those limos and cars that blocked the sounds on some parts, damn y’all
I'm Ocean alum, too. I saw the 80s Ocean in person. They dont sound like su...they sound 83-85 with heavier chords and euphonium. Euphonium is such a powerful instrument.

This was an early day parade. Bloody Sunday happens at Bacchus, the late Sunday parade.
FYI, Dega marched Bacchus later Sunday too and showed up when The Jukebox was already about 5 songs in. Got off of their busses a half block away from the park where SU was at Magazine and Napoleon.
They refused to go that half block, line up in concert formation and handle biz.
I talked to the director and he said that they had marched earlier and had a battle plus SU had 3 days rest, so they held out.

@@lejaidynasty Normally during Mardi Gras The Jukebox is smaller in size compared to Dega, but they never let that stop them.
Seems as though Dega has fell off a bit size wise. They are still bringing 🔥 tho.
