My mother was dying and had been unable to recognize anyone for several years. When she entered hospice care we asked them to discontinue all of the medications as they were a waste of her money. after 2 weeks without the drugs, including a statin, she regained her cognitive abilities and lived for nearly a year after the doctors expected her to die. Our "health care" industry is killing us.

my doctor freaked out because my cholesterol was a little high. he prescribed a statin. after i took it for a couple of months, i started to get dizzy, really tired and ached all over. I told him and he said those aren't effects of the statin. i did some research and talked to relatives that had taken statins. and told my doctor i quit taking the statins. and i changed doctors. i'm tired of these licensed drug dealers.

My last colonoscopy was in 2009, when I was 49. The gastroenterologist asked what medications I was taking and I replied, "none." Her head shot up in surprise, as if I'd uttered an obscenity. "Not even a statin?" She then asked in an accusatory tone, "You'd take medications if they were prescribed for you, wouldn't you?" I replied, "Of course, if I needed them." She clearly didn't like me making decisions about my health.
15 years later, I'm having my second colonoscopy in two days at age 64. When taking my medical history they asked what drugs I'm taking. "Vitamin B12, vitamin D3, vitamin K2." Still no statins. I do need to lose some weight and eat less carbohydrate. I'm working on it.

One of the great revelations for me in the past few years is the extent to which people are controlled by the information we receive. Propaganda (sometimes called marketing, the news...) is far more effective than we believe. Access to information determines our beliefs and actions. I had a heart episode at 42 in the middle of the night. It woke me from a deep sleep with pain around my heart. This was about 5 months from my second mandated shot of you know what. I went to the cardiologist referral from my GP. With only my cholesterol of LDL of 107 and an ekg that showed no issues he prescribed a statin. He attempted to instill fear in to me of another eminent heart episode and needed a heart study. I am a healthy weight and I weight train 4 days a week and eat healthy and I am not a smoker. I thought this extreme when he didn’t even start with a lifestyle change. I went to another cardiologist and after looking at my bloodwork ekg he did not see a pattern and only recommended a sonogram of my heart which was normal. I dunno...I want more info on that. My mother had high cholesterol all her life. She had 2 mild heart attacks, and was on a statin after the 2nd one, which was when the Dr said she had had one previously. We figured it must have been the time her shoulders hurt for a few days when she was 58 or 59. When she died at 98, she was "deaf as a post" and had almost no memory due to brain shrinkage. My dad's sister and mother both had Alzheimer's; they said my grandmother's was due to "hardening of the arteries," and she had to watch her sodium intake. Her daughter developed Type 2 diabetes and then the dementia. I suspect Grandma had Type 2 diabetes too, but it was undiagnosed. She loved her Edy's candy. She passed in 1977, and alot less was known about all of it then. I am (understandably, I hope) concerned about developing Alzheimer's, as I have Metabolic Syndrome. My doc wanted to put me on Statins, but I asked to try another way first. I lost 40 lbs on a paleo diet and my blood pressure, triglycerides and total cholesterol are down, but I still have a ways to go. I am almost totally sugar and starch-free. I am more concerned about the insulin-resistance because of the inflammatory problems it causes, which leads to all the other risks. I've read that some people just have higher cholesterol than average, and I want to look into whether it helps to protect the brain. We tell pregnant women to eat plenty of protein and good fats in the last trimester because the baby's brain needs them to develop. Why wouldn't we need them in later life, too, to preserve brain function? I was told that brain shrinkage is common in older adults--why is that? Mightn't we need the fat and cholesterol to preserve brain function?

My doctor focuses more on staying out of insulin resistance and A1C levels. When my cholesterol levels came back high with a low A1C he had me get a cardiac MRI that looks tells us how much calcium is built up all the lining of the coronary arteries. He said if that came back high than we should consider a statin for me. Mine came back low. So, no statin. Like the cardiologist here, he said statins do not prevent heart attacks and death. He said it’s insulin resistance and encourages low carbs and the Mediterranean diet.

I had been admitted to a hospital for observation over dizziness and eye drift and, I started having severe headaches while in my hospital bed and didn’t know why, and told the nurse so they gave me Tylenol every four hours. After discharge I was prescribed Lipitor so I took it severe headaches came back. I read my chart when I got home and saw they were giving me Lipitor while in my hospital bed. I did a follow up with my doctor, he said everything looked good stop the statins enjoy your life. My severe headaches ended and so did my Tylenol use. THEN, I had a CAC score test 6 weeks later since my PCP scheduled it months prior. Score score came back at 360 which is considered moderate calcification, right away my doctor prescribed Lipitor again. I said I don’t want to take it because of the headaches. He prescribes me Crestor, after a week of that and again severe headaches I emailed my doctor the side effects again. So what did my PCP do? He said let’s try you on something else, and prescribed Lipitor at a higher dose. I didn’t take them. I did a follow up last week he had me to blood work and was angry my LDL went up to 133 and total Cholesterol went to 220. He said you’re refusing Statins? I said yes, he was angry with me and got insulted when I told him these Statins are a money maker. He wrote in my record I refused Statins, and suggested I see a cardiologist. I made an appointment and I’m curious as to what he will say.

Supposedly I’ve had high cholesterol for years. My doctor said initially, well according to the old parameters you’re still fine. But after awhile she kept pushing for me to take a drug. Meanwhile my naturopath was not worried. Your good cholesterol is great, so it never even came up again. I would say to the doctor, I don’t even know how I can have high cholesterol because I didn’t eat meat for about 8 years, and minimum dairy products. So she kept pushing and I kept ignoring. I eat healthily about 90% of the time, very little sugar and processed foods, and never any fast food(mainly because I’m a celiac and can’t eat fast food bc of all the wheat). Last year my naturopath wanted my cortisol checked so I asked the doctor to include a fasting cortisol test. The doctor’s nurse called me with my results and said, “wow what are you doing??? Your cholesterol levels are perfect! My reply was I haven’t changed anything, I’m eating the same as I have for years”. When I told my naturopath what happened his hypothesis was that I took the cholesterol test on a fasting stomach, and that affected the reading. Long story short, my naturopath has kept me far healthier than my “doctor” ever has.

@@margaretwhitt3851 oh sorry, that does sound confusing. My doctor has never required me to do a fasting cholesterol, although I know some are done like that. Now that was my naturopath speculating. He doesn't know. I guess what I'm trying to convey is that caution in all prescription drugs is necessary. If you need it you need it. But so many times you can fix the problem yourself. And this was especially weird because I had not changed one thing over the years with regard to diet and exercise because I've been focussed on my health since my 30's.

Conventional wisdom.… So my cardiologist put me on a statin. But he was a really good cardiologist and did a test of my liver, kidney, and muscle health. Evidence of muscle damage was found, and he discontinued the statin after three weeks. Guess what? That cardiologist works in an HMO and therefore makes no extra money by having more patients. But question: why did he test my blood for possible organ damage (which we did find)? Because even then it was known that high percentage of statin user will get cardiac and skeletal muscle dissolution, and must stop statins. Even then the dangers of statins were well known to properly informed HONEST cardiologists.

If cholesterol was responsible for heart attacks and strokes other cholesterol lowering meds would be preventative, but they aren't. The statins are cardioprotective secondary to cholesterol lowering and that is why they reduce heart attacks and strokes. Now they’re actually saying high cholesterol is not the problem; it’s insulin resistance and diabetes!

I had the same symptoms as the man in this video, muscle aches and pains. I couldn’t even stand to wear shoes, my feet hurt so bad. I stopped the medication and the pain stopped. A few months later I tried it again after my doctor said the statins weren’t the cause. The pain came back, I am off statins for good!

I was taking a statin only because my cholestral was slightly high and my doctor recommended it. I'm not diabetic, I exercise regularly and have no other issues that require prescriptions. When I started having symptoms similar to what others here have described I stopped taking them and viola' the symptoms stopped. We're so prone to just "follow doctor's orders' that we often forget to question those orders, be a little skeptical and do our own homework. IMHO.

My cholesterol is high, but not that bad and my doctor has put me on several statins that gave me all kinds of problems, so I told him that I refuse to continue taking a statin. He tried my on Repatha, but that was the worse of all. I finally told him that I will not take anything else ever. I'm 69 years old and I told him that I feel great and that I would just take my chances. My family has high cholsterol in general and most of them have lived into their 90's without taking anything. The sad thing is, that they can refuse to see you anymore if you don't follow their instructions, but so far he's been cool with it.

Statins drain the body of co-enzyme Q10 which gives you all kinds of side affects !!!

Had cardiac stent. Put on statin 5 days later in ER with severe abdominal pain. Then developed severe jaw pain. All stopped when rosuvastatin stopped.
