I intensely dislike videos that are made to make me feel like I can never succeed because I'm not a 21st century person. I like to do things old school. I like to make things with my hands.
These are so helpful! I just launched my business and I’ve been watching these videos for tips! One thing I’d like to request would be a video about taxes for a small business… I have no clue where to start lol! Love all of your videos Genna! So excited that you’re a fellow California crocheter now! ❤
Aww thank you! I'm very happy to be in California, it's been great so far! For taxes, the biggest thing is tracking all of your expenses and income. You have to treat it like its own separate thing, that way when its time to file taxes, you can actually calculate the income from your business.
@@crochetbygenna thank you!!! I've been keeping track of my expenses like crazy lol! Do I need any type of form like a W-2 or 1099 (or any forms like that) in order to do my taxes for my business?
Clever girl DIY building garden beds and helping your Dad! It is so important to respond to body cues and allow rest for healing. How about making Saturday your Sabbath a beautiful day of rest that is a gift from God.
Yes it's definitely hard creating something original nowadays, so you have to think outside of the box. I spend lots of time just thinking about what I think would be cute and checking if its been done before or not. But it is definitely worth it, and I get lots of joy making something new!
Late to the party on this video, but as someone who is considering starting their own crochet business, this is so so helpful!! Your videos are amazing and I love how you share your wealth of knowledge ❤ you're a gem!

I find that when I’m sourcing my fabrics where I’m sourcing my fibers that becomes important. I got a remind myself if I want yarn I have to order from either Alibaba or Temu or basically the cheapest source and usually when I go from that source, I kinda get the best yarn. Also, I came up with a list of things that I wanted to have on hand, and from time to time I would work on projects, but then I would also have certain things that are made to order, but all of my things that are made to order take less than a week to make.
Hi Genna, I love watching your videos this one especially, (I really wanna start my own crochet business) and thank you for being to sweet and kind in your videos! :)
I feel like this video is a sign. Today I was talking to my mom about selling my crochet plushies. I didn't even know about your page. It just popped up on my feed. I'll take it as a sign!!
Thank you 😊 This was the first video of yours that I watched and I really enjoyed the effort you put into your video 🎉 Thanks from Calgary Alberta Canada 🇨🇦
Just started posting on my own TH-cam channel and aiming to release my first pattern next month or so. I got really inspired from this video. Thank you so much! Any tips in how to get viewers to comment on the first couple of videos when your channel is new?
Hi Genna! Could you make a video or a short on how you set up your shipping profiles?? I cannot for the life of me figure out how to get my shipping costs to a reasonable place when calculated. Are yours set up as fixed? Thank you :)
Thanks for sharing. Gives me a lot of ideas. I need to do passive, limited and self pace because I have a mild cognitive disability from a stroke but still want to run one for myself.
I liked this video a lot, but I have a question. The thumbnail says $20,000 per month, but you didn’t break that down for us to show us how much money comes from which source. Could you explain that a bit? Thank you!
Hi Genna, I love watching! I was wondering how do you keep track of the money side of things? Do you keep it written, or on a spread sheet, or even use different bank accounts? I just recently started selling things and have learned that its hard to keep track of the money I want to put towards the business versus the money that I get from working my 9-5!
Hi, I use Quickbooks, but there are other softwares out there that you can use (i think there are even some free ones). I also have a separate bank account for everything business related, income and expenses. I would really recommend a separate bank account and using a way of tracking income and expenses, it can as simple as an excel document. And def save all receipts (or keep a digital file of them), it will make tax season a lot easier!
Genna, I'm curious how you feel about how people are having issues with Etsy shutting down their shops without explanation. I was seriously considering opening my shop on Etsy, but so many new shops are being suspended almost immediately and money is being held from sales for a substantial time period. This makes me very concerned about being able to be successful with Etsy. You're input would be greatly appreciated!
Omg I was not aware about this happening😬 But I would recommend opening an etsy shop since it's an additional income stream, I'm very fortunate to not have had any problems with etsy, and I wish the same for you!
@@crochetbygennahii! It’s not about crochet but if I were to start a small business and use a knitting matching would that be like scamming people? Hope it makes sense lol but meaning that the pieces are wouldn’t be handmade like so
About keeping up with the trend, does it still apply for artists who already have a strong personal style? Wouldn’t making trendy products make your artworks homogenous?😢
I have a 40 hour a week job . I love chrochet and make a wide variety of things. I also knit. I will open an etsy shop later this year. I want to sell blankets, socks ,beanie's, scarfs. Second hand physical patterns. I am ordering a knitting maschine to help with scarfs and patterns. I think the key is to make what you enjoy making. Downside to rural Australia, yarn shop is 1 hour away or my favourite yarns are from England.
100% agree with this! I've had a lot of other businesses that ultimately failed because I wasn't passionate about them! Ugh, so sad the yarn is so far! 😭
I’ve been thinking about starting a shop for a while now, but I am little confused when it comes to what’s acceptable to sell. For example, if I use a pattern that I did not create, can I still sell the finished product? (I would credit the pattern creator and such of course) I just don’t know if I need to only sell original things or if using others’ patterns is okay.
Know this is late, but I wanted to chip in. Usually, when you use a pattern whether that be paid or free the creator has a clause that gives you the rules for commercial purposes. Like some are okay with only a few per week being sold or some are 100% okay with any sells made by you. The biggest no no for patterns is reselling the actual written pattern. If you don't see any info in the description of said pattern do not feel bad for asking, rather be safe then sorry 🎉
This was super helpful! I always try to keep things priced at what I’d personally be okay with paying for handmade plushies but it’s good to be reaffirmed in charging your worth!
Hehe thank you!! I plan on coming out with a video soon dedicated to social media strategies!! 💕 But try to be consistent and post reels as much as possible!

Thank you for this helpful video. I am currently thinking about opening an Etsy shop. I love to crochet. One question for you, did you reach out to the designers before making their item to sell in your shop? Like do you allow people to make your patterns and sell them on line or at a market?
