- People ask me all the time how they can start a business like mine. I've put off answering because there's no exact right or wrong answer. But I truly do want to help however I can, so without further ado, here's my step-by-step guide to starting a stationery business. This is exactly what I would do if I was starting from scratch now. Timing is everything, so I can't say for sure whether this model will work now in 2024. But based on everything I've learned over the last 9 years, this is what I think would be the most direct and cost-effective way to get into the stationery store game!

If you're new here - welcome! I started my business on my 18th birthday selling paintings I made in my free time. I continued to run and grow it throughout college and graduate school, and into law school at Duke University. Now I'm running the business full time, law degree in hand, and I wouldn't have it any other way! I sell my art on my website, wholesale on Faire.com and I license my work to be sold in stores including Home Goods, Marshalls, At Home, and World Market.

Helping others follow in your successful footsteps? YES Ma’am!! And the positive circle continues around. 😁🕊️
I'm all about helping other people find ways to do it, too!
This is what my friend does for stickers. She buys her sticker paper on Amazon and prints them at UPS. They charge her 60 cents per sheet. She then cuts the, at home. This way she has the freedom to get as many as she wants.
it is expensive and cutting by hand makes me scared ...if you order in bulk you pay around 0,20 p each ...so lets say 300 would be around 60... i used to make mines with cricut but i prefer to order my cards and stickers from a printer as they are far more professional xx
I love seeing videos of successful people making content for others, so they can be successful too! Thank you for sharing 💗
You're so welcome!
Thank you! Can you do a video of some of your favorite manufacturers or how to find good manufacturers?
I don’t think she’d want to share cause of competition or other reasons. I have seen samples overseas of some of her designs when I’ve purchased my own products. So I think that’s what she does for some products.
@@abbycat000I respect your opinion but I have to disagree because her sharing manufacturer would be just that. We are not making the same material meaning no one can copy her work without penalty . She has the rights to her Art.
I was speaking more along the lines of her saying “hey I really like sticker mule for stickers” . I don’t make stickers or stationary but it could be helpful to hear from someone with this much experience how to go about finding manufacturers for any product using your own artwork.
@@gabzwilson2750 I’m letting you know cause I’m someone who asked her through Instagram once. She (or perhaps an employee) said that hopefully I would understand, but they wished not to share manufacturers for her “bigger” products like planners and desk mats. But hope you get a response.
@@gabzwilson2750agree. Helping by sending artists in the right direction is the kind of help we’re looking for as we’re just starting out. It saves time and money 😊
All it takes is a little research and i promise you can find them.
If you can make a video about the process of making sticker designs that sell that would be great❤
What are your thoughts regarding stocking your own inventory and doing your own shipping versus using a print on demand service?
So amazingly helpful; I've been stalled and overwhelmed. Didn't think this video could get better, and then there was a PUPPY. lol. make my day. TY
I'm so glad to hear it was helpful! Good luck with your business!
This was so helpful! Thank you so much for sharing so freely. We love puppy content.❤
Thank you so much for sharing Elyse.
This is so good, brilliant video 😊😊
Thank you for always sharing so open an honestly! As creatives we need more of this! ❤😊
I ‘m working on starting my small business and lucky me I saw your video I will gladly do every step hopefully it will succeed
Great advice. Thank you.

Yes, *luxdups* handbags! I'm wearing candy pink and I've been rocking my "Barbie" bag all summer long. Yes!
Thank you
Very helpful ❤
i love this series!
Oh my. This is Perfect Guide you made. This is Perfect Infor and Motivation of How I will Begin My Own Home Shop. Thank you.❤❤❤I will be watching more videos of yours.😁
Thank you for such helpful videos! If you can please make one on what kind of social media content to make as a small business
Thank you so much! This is very helpful. ♥️ I would love if you could talk about how to find wholesalers and how to order stuff. I see on websites that we can make inquiries but I get nervous and whimp out.
You're amazing!
Awesome advice
Thank you for all these helpful and insightful videos. I have had my etsy shop for about 10 years. It's more of a hobby and brings in a little income in conjunction with doing craft fairs, but I have never thought of upgrading from a sole proprietorship to an LLC, but I have been considering since I also sell on Faire and do a lot of craft markets.
Yes, you should do so! Also consider expanding/scaling your business/hobby with selling your designs via print on demand. You deserve better than treating it like a hobby! Good luck!
Thank you so much for this video! Really appreciate it.
Glad it was helpful!
I’m hoping to start a clay and gemstone jewelry and accessories business! So glad to see this!! Could you do a video on the best way to organize and ship items?? I feel like having a good setup and understanding shipping is where I’m rly stuck! ❤
Thank you for this video, so helpful! I have been thinking about adding notepads to my shop and possibly creating greeting cards, I think now I definitely will! I love the idea of using the art from your stickers on greeting cards and other products. Such a good idea thank you! Please make a video on shipping internationally from the US if you don't have an Etsy shop. It is one thing I struggle with understanding how to do. I only ship to the US and Canada for this reason. :(
Geat tips.
Can you make a large monthly desk/ wall calendar? All the options out there already aren’t cute
Thanks! This was perfect and straight to the point. My question is should I trademark my name “Maria Gifford Studio” and name of shop “My Art Pixie”?
Congratulations on your success! I know your parents are so proud. Quick question, did you start out making your own stickers, cutting them from home?
Thank you so much! I never printed my own stickers, I've always outsourced them. Both Sticker Mule and Sticker Blitz are really affordable and make great quality products, and it just wasn't worth my time to print them myself!
Thank you SO much for all of this awesome and helpful information!! 💐 How often do you post on the social media platforms a week?
It definitely fluctuates depending on whether I have a release or a product I'm really promoting, and of course on my day-to-day life, too. But I try to post to TikTok and Instagram somewhere between 3-5 times a week.
@@Elysebreannedesign Thank you! I appreciate all your help! I am working on growing my craft business so I greatly appreciate all of your tips. I love to see people succeed with their dreams. It’s cool to watch your business grow!!
could you please tell how you did manage not to harm any trademarks, you could have used some words which are used in brands axidentally
Can you help us with people stealing our artwork? How do we protect ourselves online?
Hi. I love your videos and motivation! May I ask what machine you used to start your business? Thanks!
Hi there, thank you! What do you mean, what machine I used?
@@Elysebreannedesign Did you start by printing your stickers yourself or did you outsource from the beginning?
What kind of printer do you recommend for printing at home? For starting out
So I absolutely swear by my Canon printer! I've been using the same one for years for cards, art prints, packaging and all sorts of random projects. I actually have 3 of them in the office now. I linked to it around the 3:00 mark of the video, that's the exact one I have!
Thank you! What printer do you recommend?
For Stickers I really recommend Sticker Blitz or Sticker Mule! You can use code EBD10 to take 10% off your first order from Sticker Blitz! Or this link to get $10 off your first Sticker Mule order: www.stickermule.com/unlock?ref_id=9047121701&
I'm working on a video now explaining the pros and cons of each, so stay tuned!
Hi. Congratulations on building you successful business. Question, when you make stickers or bookmarks are they your own drawing designs or did you use photos that are free to use from the internet? Also to print them at another business did you take your drawing or painting to them. Can you please help me understand the process. Much appreciated. Thanks and all the best to you. Sherry from Canada 🇨🇦.
These are all my own designs! I create them in an app called Procreate and then send files to the manufacturers. I have a few videos about Procreate and am working on more tutorials, so you check out my other videos for tips!
What kind of paper do you/did you use when printing greeting cards from home? Would love a high quality paper and envelope but not sure where to look. Thanks! ❤
Hi there! I love sharing the materials I used. Here's my Amazon link to all of the greeting card supplies I recommend: www.amazon.com/shop/elysebreannedesign/list/MA0AFXYQHAPL?ref_=aip_sf_list_spv_ofs_mixed_d
@@Elysebreannedesign thank you so much! I love that you share everything so transparently. It looks like you’ve created a wonderful company!
etsy now has changed so much i came off it...i wanna bring buyers to my website
how do you print your stickers?
Hi there! I talk about it in this video actually! I outsource them to a manufacturer. I'm creating another video in the next few weeks explaining which companies I like best, so stay tuned!
My daughter and I started our stationery business on Etsy using our own artwork just over a year ago which has ticked along very slowly with very few sales. This year we have tried to get onto Faire so many times (I think 5 times in 4 months) and everytime they just keep telling us that there is far too many people doing Stationery on Faire and will not let us on. Do you have any hints or tips as to how we can get onto Faire please? We sell Greetings cards, bookmarks, wrapping paper, Writing paper gift boxes and lots more. It is so frustrating to be knocked back every time by Faire that keeps letting more and more shops on, but we cannot get onto it. We use only recycled products of paper, envelopes and gift boxes - even the ribbons are recycled plastic bottles. Any help please!
That's so frustrating! I'm not sure I have any extra insight. When I was first denied, it was because they weren't letting sticker makers on at all. So once I saw a brand selling stickers on there, I applied again and got on. Maybe you can highlight what makes you different in your application? My other tip is to make sure you're using social media to drive your sales! Have fun with it and keep trying - it only takes one video to jump start your sales!
@@Elysebreannedesign Thank you for your reply, I will try again with a new approach this time and see if that works x
It just feels like stickers, note cards, and book marks are so oversaturated at this point. Am I wrong? I tried the art prints and it is very competitive and hard to break in at this point. Is it just me or is it too late to jump in on these products?
It’s all about the design in my opinion! There’s always room in the market for a design that resonates with people!
@@Elysebreannedesign I can see that. A new and different design that people like. So I am thinking, if I made 100 new and different designs then maybe a few of them would resonate with people. Have you done any paid advertising? Or has it all been free social media posts?
Thanks for your reply, by the way. I am very impressed with what you have done to create such a successful creative business.
Is this a re upload?
No, this is a new video!
sadly things are changing very fast these days, it seems it your success happened years ago, so success is not guaranteed, the same recipe might not work out
