Why Beautiful Things Make us Happy - Beauty Explained

  • It’s hard to define what makes something beautiful, but we seem to know beauty when we see it. Why is that and how does beauty affect our subconscious?
    This video was a collaboration with the creative agency Sagmeister & Walsh as a contribution to their upcoming Beauty exhibition at the MAK Vienna from October 23rd onwards. If you want to learn more about the impact of beauty and see tons of gorgeous installations and multi-media objects, go check it out on www.mak.at/en_sagmeister_walsh
    The Beauty exhibition will also be shown in the Museum Angewandte Kunst Frankfurt from May 11th till September 15th.

    I'm an artist, and my best friend is a nurse who works with geriatric patients. I've often told her I sometimes wish my life's work served humanity as directly as hers does. When i heard the bit about how art in hospital wards makes the patients feel a little better, it reminded me that we are both serving humanity in two, very complementary, ways. Thank you for making this wonderful video.

      as an engineer I am very very very aware of the importance of aesthetics in my work. I would say, now that you've acquired this information it is your duty to try to work to get those hospital wards more beautiful. The results of those studies, if you read them, were not small. They were immensely significant. Statues, wall art, natural beauty such as flowers etc and even the colors of walls all are known to reduce pain and hospital stays somehow aiding in our psychological wellness and in healing speed.
      I hope you can use this to start a movement, no movement is small. A hurricane often begins with a gentle breeze.

      @MARES OF TRACE - The emergency department of Cape Cod Hospital has many beautiful, large oceanscapes by a single great artist. They are all appear to be originals (not those glicees). and the placement isn't random, but well thought-out and consistent. They did an excellent job utilizing artworks.

      Not true. Beauty is more than just a feeling in our heads. It's a call to what we are inside. An infinite being with embedded completeness (in Christ Jesus). That completeness (or the observation of the reality of the completeness) is what pirsig in zen and the art of motorcycle (a book) calls quality. I call it spirit.
      Beauty is just deeper than you think. Yes it is also a feeling in your head but its more than that.

    This honestly is one of my favourite videos you guys have made. I've quite recently finally connected the dots. The circumstances on my life have been very good. I won't go too much into detail but in general I have everything I need. And a lot of things I want. But I still feel really depressed for some reason. I will be soon moving out of my apartment and one idea where I would move would be my summer cottage, I had other options but they were much more expensive so I rather did not take them. So I went there for a week to prepare for me to move in and testing how feasible is living there. I enjoyed the time there, I was much less comfortable there yeah since it lacks most modern comforts. But I was happy there. Once I returned to my dull concrete box of a apartment I immediately felt my mood drop. It was like a train hit me. A few days later i thought about it and realised most likely it's the environment that's causing this. At that moment I realized, no matter how much modern comforts I have no matter how much material belongings I have, no matter how much money I have I will never have a happy life if I live in a ugly environment.

    The subjective aspect of beauty is in meaning. If you can relate to something that makes it subjectively beautiful. And then there's more intersubjective stuff like symmetry and such. But both modes are needed for genuine beauty.
    Falling in love is a combination of both. Listening to music that is well arranged while also relating with the lyrics on a deeply emotional level is also a moment of beauty.
    That is also a combination of both modes.

      That’s a part of it but I think beauty is beyond scientific explanation, things can be beautiful in a very unexplainable manner, for example one may consider looks (not faces but expressions) to be beautiful, beauty comes from a realm outside our own and we get only an infinitely small glimpse of what true beauty it.

Then I went back to school for horticulture and landed a job running a greenhouse for a local wholesale floral distribution center. The work is A LOT harder but I noticed I wasn't as depressed anymore. Probably because I was surrounded by beautiful flowers and ornamental trees. Which getting huge discounts on for being a worker... I'd then bring home loads of them a Fiddle Fig tree here... an orchid there... etc etc now my house is full of precious little flora that every time I look at I smile.

    So happy I stumbled upon this excellent analysis. One of the things I have always wondered is exactly this. I specifically ask myself why certain districts in a city elevate your mood and some do the opposite. Why in so many movies and stories do we see youth who hate their hometown and would leave it behind at the first opportunity? I have entertained such questions with a pragmatic ambition: would it not be so beneficial to whole societies if we learned how to intervene and change the "beauty" factor? Wouldn't you like to have cities and rural areas where most places are beautiful? And the ripple effect of having more and more content and happy citizens is all positive as well.
    It pains me to see what the potentials for us, as a civilization, are and what world we live in. What we could *be* is worlds farther from what the reality is in Kharkiv and Mariupol and Kiev and Yemen and Kabul ...

Doesn't matter which theme (need to get the ok from the director beforehand though), or what kind of graduation they have or if the wall is inside or outside the building. In my old school, they even painted on the floors of the school grounds and on pillars.
      Only exception are, of course, the parts of a school building that are put under monument protection. For my old school, that was just the outer facade and inside the decorative parts and stucco work. No problem painting on the inside walls and even ceiling around them.

      Sidenote: It is mostly due to moving lines and dots appearing on the "pretty" building - at least in this particular case. Our eyes tend to be attracted by movement. It has an evolutionary basis as it helps to detect animals in the wilderness. My guess is that folks in Kurzgesagt used this phenomenon to let you experience their argument about beauty in just a few seconds. This feeling makes you remember their argument and video for longer. And it really is super clever when you think about it! ;)
      Well, the amount of work needed for these videos amazes me every time I see them. Keep it up (but with birds, please)!

      The eye tracking software was developped for marketing purposes. When you want to sell a product, the design will define if it is visible enough amongst others. You can rent a "fake market/lab research" where someone is asked to wear the eye-tracking device, and it will help to define if your product is visually catchy enough. If the person didnt look at your product at all you might consider redesigning it

    As a professional artist I've given this a fair amount of thought. Beauty is the process of creating a discernable pattern and then breaking that pattern but only far enough to create tension between opposites. The more you can break the pattern without actually breaking the overall pattern the better you are at it. In the end no matter what kind of art it is the final product has to interact with itself in such a way that nothing can be added or taken away without ruining the harmony inside the work. The harmony is the dynamic effect of opposites creating tensions in ways that go round and round. Music exists in time. Painting in a space. Literature in patterns of meaning. They all depend on composition. It has to do with how our brains work, probably because of the kind of patterns we find in nature which are similar to this in effect. I'm sure that wasn't very helpful, sorry I'm not a writer. I think it's a coincidental side effect of our massive ability for pattern recognition.

    • @dancingsocrates9491
      @dancingsocrates9491 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      I thought that was very well-described. It works this way in dance, too. Dance forms tend to come from repetitive practical tasks (dances based around picking fruit, for example), but what makes it a dance rather than a task is the variation within that original theme that inspired it.

    • @Jasper-nk5fo
      @Jasper-nk5fo 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I think you have captured this -dare I say - beautifully. Without the break in the pattern, there is nothing to draw our attention but if there is no discernible pattern at all we are just left confused and frustrated.
