A good definition of consciousness I once read in a text on yoga psychology is that consciousness is awareness of awareness and this always sat well with me.
Which is probably something that all sentient beings experience to some extent, not just humans. For all intents and purposes, either all sentient animals are conscious beings, or none are.

Basically all animals have this as long as they have the ability to sense and to have intentionality at all, it is not based on any specific number or acuity of the senses one has access to (for example, blind or autistic people are just as sentient as people who can see or who are neurotypical, contrary to what we used to think a few decades ago). Sapience, on the other hand, is having wisdom, or prescriptive knowledge, the ability to reflect on the value of one's choices and experiences, either past, present or future; it is to some extent an acquired trait, humans are merely born with the necessary conditions to develop sapience; for example, newborn human babies are not sapient yet, but will gradually develop it and expand this capacity through reflecting on their experiences. It is arguable that members of some other species have potential for developing sapience as well; like rats which pass empathy-behavior tests, parrots, most whales, etc.
Except that’s just an assumption. We don’t know any reason why or how unconscious material would somehow become conscious. It’s a serious philosophical problem.
I often think about how in hundreds of years from now, digital archeologists will be combing through these videos and marvel at how we could possibly have got by in our lives knowing so little about how we got to where we currently are.

My guess is that consciousness formed as an improved feedback system. It is a lot easier for an organism to approach or avoid certain circumstances if it has tools that span beyond that of automatic processes. The ability to think and reason does a lot to help ensure the survival and quality of life of an individual. It also helps one make sense of the environment around oneself rather than just existing and relying on automatic functions
Yea definitely just the results of millions of years of trail and error. My theory is we don’t even develop consciousness until we grow older as kids after we have processed enough data about the world. Like a video game that makes you level up to learn new skills or develop the skill you have to be more refined.
But if it's just a complex mechanism like in a comouter, how are we intrinsicly aware of it. In your view there is literally no difference between a complex organism calculatiung sensory input without having an acutual consciousness to an actual conscious being. I think you are confusting consciousness with self reflexion an complex thought. But a very good computer could have the same thoughts without being conscious at all.

But there are a few people that actually can remember their early childhood and they also percieve pain in the same way as you, they just can't verbalize it or create complex thoughts and reflexion.

Since allowing the brain to develop based on its experience after birth allows for a greater understanding of the world as the human grows up. Instead of having to wait for eeveloution to catch up with making a more complex mind, the mind can just learn on its own without evelution. Both Parties have learned valuable things from the experience, and frankly, the viewership of both channels benefit. There are other impetus for consciousness than food. I've been writing that the brain needs a feedback mechanism to ensure that cellular chemical and neurological processes are functioning accurately. Then it needs mechanisms to ensure the guardian mechanisms function properly, then mechanisms to watch the watchers. An eventual level of consciousness emerges as a result.

I was always slightly bothered when people refer to "consciousness" as something that a thing either has or does not have. I don't think its as black-and-white as that, I think some creatures have more or less consciousness than others, and even go through phases of being more or less conscious throughout their lifespan (like sleeping, or being distracted, or making decisions) AND more importantly, I think consciousness is not just a 1-dimensional scale. I think it can branch, and something can be more conscious in one area than something else. For a small example, dogs and cats are much more conscious than us of our world in terms of scents. But, that's just my personal "definition" of the word... I just feel like it describes things a lot more usefully than I see most other people use it.

5:22 That makes a lot of sense when you consider that game we play with babies where we hide ourselves and see their reactions. Interestingly, this game only really has an effect on them when they're in the early stages of developing their consciousness, and they rarely form permanent memories at this age. Perhaps, much like how we can observe things like our vestigial tails disappearing during the fetal stage, we could learn the most about consciousness by observing the brain's development between the ages of it first forming and adult maturity?

It also makes you wonder just how large something has to be to have basic consciousness. Flies definitely remember and detect/consider danger. So do very tiny bugs. If an ant or an aphid can think, just how small can minds / consciousness be? Can a cell think? Does it have any awareness of the environment around it? Bacteria do. They seek out other bacteria and exchange genetic information to better defend themselves. They share resources with the ones on the edge to better protect the colony, even when of totally different types. They build biofilm walls. Considering all of the parallels to what we ourselves build, do bacteria "think"? They obviously have no concept of what "we" are. We are too big, and we live too long relative to them. A example to consider of similar scope - it would be like if galaxies or suns shot radiation at each other to communicate, over millions of years. We'd have no way to detect it, no way to collect info on it since we do not live long enough - but we can ponder it. Can a sun be alive? In that same way, does a bacteria wonder if the world that it lives in is alive? Probably not. Probably needs more neurons. But you never know. Genetics are an excellent way to share information. Perhaps there is an innate genetic language founded by the laws of the universe that such tiny creatures use, because it is there?

This channel covers a lot of really complex issues, and its sad to see them not give them their due time. This issue of consciousness should be way more fleshed out. Its basically the most advanced philosophical question there is put into a ten minute video.
One thing not talked about in the video is, what is "the self"? Why am I this "self"? Are others really other "selves" just like me or are they not really "selves" and giving the benefit of the doubt that they are actually conscious "selves" is the only thing I can do? The only time I've felt like I truly understood consciousness was the few times I've experienced what a psychosis felt like. I remember just being blown away and in a state of awe and appreciation, knowing that I wouldn't understand what I was feeling once I snapped out of it
I experienced psychosis couple times, it was horrible for me. It's basicly when your brain loses its ability to filter out reality. There are terabytes of input coming at your mind every second, and if you fail to filter what has value and what has not, you go into psychosis. A state of mind where you doubt every belief you ever had, you lose your confidence in yourself completely and you feel like something terrible is about to happen. It's such a mental torture that I wouldn't want my enemies to experience. So so horrible. Yet society conditions us every day to hide our feelings and not express ourselves fully. Good luck not expressing yourself for a long time. Because you will lose your ability to trust yourself, your emotions and your instincts. You will be left with the logical fact that someday you are going to die. And then my friend, you will only feel fear. So horrible. I believe this society is prone to collapse because of this fundamental problem.

The way we’re talking about consciousness here sounds more specifically like conscious awareness, the part of our consciousness we can work with and know about explicitly. Consciousness itself would be something even beyond this. We don’t know what we don’t know, so it’s impossible to know at this time just how expansive consciousness actually is. The assumption that it is endogenously produced is an interesting and maybe not totally true assumption.
Speaking as an actual panpsychist, none of us believes rocks are consciousness, we believe rocks are composed of smaller things that have the potential for consciousness. Imagine like you have all the raw materials to make a boat. There are many ways for you to organize these mAterials but very few in which they will transcend their basic status and become an actual boat, if that makes sense. We refer to it as “organizational duality”

Search up the name of the channel and exposed. They throw dirt on smaller channels and oversimplify the information they used from another scientist.
This is still just an explanation of intelligence and awareness. Consciousness is not a necessary biproduct of these. All robots that are made with senses and impulses, memory and imagination are still merely dead matter as far as we know.

i feel like the video talked about developing an inner representation of reality around us, and being able to recall/recreate it - that's a pretty important aspect of specifically consciousness, not just awareness. if you're aware, you process stimuli, but if you're conscious, you internally visualise and represent this stimuli in virtual ways

It's an infinite regress. Within yourself, you try to look at and figure out your own consciousness. So you separate yourself from it to look at it. In a sense, a consciousness B looks at and tries to figure out consciousness A. Then, a consciousness C looks at and tries to figure out consciousness B, etc., etc., etc., all the way to Z and beyond. There is no "outside-consciousness" perspective. That's the mystery. That's the wonder. That's where God comes in. Infinite. Eternal. Boundless. We never get to the bottom of it. We never get outside of it. It is ever-present in every experience, even in the experience of trying to understand itself.
The mere fact that our consciousness lets us feel endangered of even physically harmless stuff like a insult / tweet against your faith is mind dazzling too

There are other impetus for consciousness than food. I've been writing that the brain needs a feedback mechanism to ensure that cellular chemical and neurological processes are functioning accurately. Then it needs mechanisms to ensure the guardian mechanisms function properly, then mechanisms to watch the watchers. An eventual level of consciousness emerges as a result.

Simply put, mutations in the genome enabled the development of novel proteins that could detect light, which would be an extremely useful feature to have in order to perceive objects around the organism. Natural selection can then fixate these traits in a population, wherein organisms with this beneficial mutation out-compete others.

I was always slightly bothered when people refer to "consciousness" as something that a thing either has or does not have. I don't think its as black-and-white as that, I think some creatures have more or less consciousness than others, and even go through phases of being more or less conscious throughout their lifespan (like sleeping, or being distracted, or making decisions)
AND more importantly, I think consciousness is not just a 1-dimensional scale. I think it can branch, and something can be more conscious in one area than something else. For a small example, dogs and cats are much more conscious than us of our world in terms of scents.
But, that's just my personal "definition" of the word... I just feel like it describes things a lot more usefully than I see most other people use it.

It also makes you wonder just how large something has to be to have basic consciousness. Flies definitely remember and detect/consider danger. So do very tiny bugs. If an ant or an aphid can think, just how small can minds / consciousness be? Can a cell think? Does it have any awareness of the environment around it? Bacteria do. They seek out other bacteria and exchange genetic information to better defend themselves. They share resources with the ones on the edge to better protect the colony, even when of totally different types. They build biofilm walls. Considering all of the parallels to what we ourselves build, do bacteria "think"? They obviously have no concept of what "we" are. We are too big, and we live too long relative to them. A example to consider of similar scope - it would be like if galaxies or suns shot radiation at each other to communicate, over millions of years. We'd have no way to detect it, no way to collect info on it since we do not live long enough - but we can ponder it. Can a sun be alive? In that same way, does a bacteria wonder if the world that it lives in is alive?
Probably not. Probably needs more neurons. But you never know. Genetics are an excellent way to share information. Perhaps there is an innate genetic language founded by the laws of the universe that such tiny creatures use, because it is there?

I experienced psychosis couple times, it was horrible for me. It's basicly when your brain loses its ability to filter out reality. There are terabytes of input coming at your mind every second, and if you fail to filter what has value and what has not, you go into psychosis. A state of mind where you doubt every belief you ever had, you lose your confidence in yourself completely and you feel like something terrible is about to happen. It's such a mental torture that I wouldn't want my enemies to experience. So so horrible. Yet society conditions us every day to hide our feelings and not express ourselves fully. Good luck not expressing yourself for a long time. Because you will lose your ability to trust yourself, your emotions and your instincts. You will be left with the logical fact that someday you are going to die. And then my friend, you will only feel fear. So horrible. The way we’re talking about consciousness here sounds more specifically like conscious awareness, the part of our consciousness we can work with and know about explicitly. Consciousness itself would be something even beyond this. We don’t know what we don’t know, so it’s impossible to know at this time just how expansive consciousness actually is. The assumption that it is endogenously produced is an interesting and maybe not totally true assumption.

Speaking as an actual panpsychist, none of us believes rocks are consciousness, we believe rocks are composed of smaller things that have the potential for consciousness. Imagine like you have all the raw materials to make a boat. There are many ways for you to organize these mAterials but very few in which they will transcend their basic status and become an actual boat, if that makes sense. This is still just an explanation of intelligence and awareness. Consciousness is not a necessary biproduct of these. All robots that are made with senses and impulses, memory and imagination are still merely dead matter as far as we know.
At last the comment I was looking for, saying the things I was thinking of almost the whole video. The development of intelligence and awareness are demonstrated, but whether this automatically means consciousness - we don't know.
i feel like the video talked about developing an inner representation of reality around us, and being able to recall/recreate it - that's a pretty important aspect of specifically consciousness, not just awareness.
if you're aware, you process stimuli, but if you're conscious, you internally visualise and represent this stimuli in virtual ways

When we evolve so much that we are consciousness that we have a consciousness that's trying to figure out what consciousness is
then attempting to find and ask if another consciousness is also aware of their consciousness.
It's an infinite regress. Within yourself, you try to look at and figure out your own consciousness. So you separate yourself from it to look at it. In a sense, a consciousness B looks at and tries to figure out consciousness A. Then, a consciousness C looks at and tries to figure out consciousness B, etc., etc., etc., all the way to Z and beyond. There is no "outside-consciousness" perspective. That's the mystery. That's the wonder. That's where God comes in. Infinite. Eternal. Boundless. We never get to the bottom of it. We never get outside of it. It is ever-present in every experience, even in the experience of trying to understand itself.
