Wiseman was the best villain in my opinion. He was more intelligent than lazy Beryl and was not redeemed by the power of love like the other villains later on. He was a pure evil bastard who gave you all the right reasons to hate him.
Agreed! The only one who could compare to him in wickedness is Pharaoh 90, but in Sailor Moon S he is just a great amount of black matter without voice. We can have a glance of his evil only in Sailor Moon Crystal.
I WILL agree the Wiseman was clever and very hateable. But I still pick Ann and Alan as my favorite villains. (I saw the DIC dub). First, they actually had a genuinely good motivation and weren't just evil for the sake of being evil. They had to get energy, or else they would DIE. And that whole point about "positive" energy is an great metaphor. Second, they actually CARED for one another. Most other season 1 and 2 villains don't give a DAM about eachother and just want to win. (And while the Dark-Moon sisters DO care for one another, they bicker WAY too much over their own egos. Sailor Moon is ALL filled with annoying arguments and stereotypes about beauty, but season R cranked it up to eleven!) Ann and Alan had a good balance of sweet moments in-between the bickering. Which is realistic for a couple. Contrast this to Rei, Luna, Serena, Rini, etc. who all bicker WAY too much, it becomes annoying. And they RARELY show any affection to counterbalance it. Oh, and there's also the oposite end of the spectrum, where you have Zoysite and Malekite (I think that's how it's spelled), who are a too-perfect couple and never fight. Ann and Alan achieved a balance that Sailor Moon NEVER got right before or since. But what REALLY makes them stand out is that they had secret identities too. They got to interact with the untransformed scouts during school and other stuff. That was SO cool! I wish Ann and Alan would stick for longer. Hell, I wish ALL villains would do this.
I never liked DiC's dub, but I have to admit that Tony Daniels nailed as Wiseman. Steve Kramer was OK, but IMO he had only one remarkable line: "A flower, no matter how beautiful, withers in the course of time". I really love his tone and accent in this scene. He looked like a British Lord. However, Tony Daniels had a lot of many remarkable lines: "He left you...FOR US!", "Remember your loneliness, your emptiness! You've born alone and you always remains alone!", "You ACTUALLY believe that you can handle the power of Dark Crystal? Meet your fate!", not to mention "the awful laugh of hers gave me a migraine"

Eiji has this ancient sounding voice of a wise and powerful sage , but it can get really sinister when he wants to drive the wickedness of Wiseman's true colors. Hiroshi...let's face his take is that of a creepy and unnaturally high voice of a twisted old man, but at the same time that voice results in some hilarity when he goes up in pitch in scenes that should be creepy. He does redeem his role when does he takes his Death Phantom/Planet Nemesis true form, the tone gets deep and gives off an ancient eldritch being full of malice and rightful confidence in being a literal talking planet. Tony- Starts off generic, but then gets deeper in tone to give off an intimidating voice...and then his voice changes again, it sounds more like a Deception type of voice (from the Armada era and I'd swear that he actually voiced one of them) than a powerful evil advisor. Steve has the sage like voice of what you expect of a wiseman and has this grandfatherly tone that you'd naturally get drawn to like, especially since he voiced the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi, who was very much a loving grandfather figure. But, this hides his true manipulative nature, which casually deposes of others and revels in wickedness. It's the Sailor Moon equivalent of Emperor Palpatine/Darth Sidious if I could make a comparison.
Eiji Maruyama remains the best Wiseman to me - I got chills from his performance. Not too keen on the false silly old man take that Hiroshi Iwasaki delivered, although if he dropped the "eccentric" aspect, I think he would've been great. My feelings on the English voices are kinda mixed - Tony Daniels was rather good to begin with (if he had stuck to this voice - 06:14 - 06:24 - for the duration of the series, he would've been perfect to me), until his voice became too heavy with vocal effects in the later episodes and it didn't help that he got a bit too shouty either. On the other hand, Steve Kramer did a great job nailing Wiseman's character although his voice should've been a lot creepier.
Another case of each voice actor doing a great job in their own right and bringing a slightly different but effective approach to the part. I like how Tony Daniels gradually becomes more distorted and sinister.
That voice was perfect! The DiC dub did a lot of things wrong but that was NOT one of them. The original soundtrack was also great too but his voice with whatever distortion they did was and continues to be one of the creepiest voices for a character I've ever heard.

7:28 I remember as a kid this line gave me chills. “The last puzzle piece has been found….and now nothing…. *NOTHING* CAN STOP ME!!!” His voice was already deep and they make it even deeper when he says nothing the second time, combine that with Chibi’s evil little laugh at the end. He’s the one character I think the DiC dub did better than the Viz dub.
Maruyama sounds so evil I LOVE it! He just has that perfect, classic, strong, sinister tone. Plus you get a hint of him taking pleasure in his evil actions while being reserved enough to not let on that he's pulling Demande's puppet strings. Iwasaki sounds like a silly old man, I get what they were going for to have him play the fool to downplay his vileness... but I prefer the default voice being wise and sinister.
Something I really liked about Steve Kramer's performance as Wiseman was how it seemed to harken back to those over-the-top villains from classic cinema

There was a big gap between the first part of Sailor Moon R and the rest of it when it came to dubbing, "The Lost Episodes". Daniels may have just forgotten how he voiced him before and tried something different, or the Voice Director wanted him to try something new.
The Wiseman/Doom Phantom is the reason why I like Sailor Moon i love the Dic over the Viz and plus i can lip sync all the words to the Dic version of the wiseman.
In a potential Kingdom Hearts boss fight... Death Phantom should say "You may have been able to restore Chibi-Usa, but even without Black Lady, I've still got more than enough Dark Power to vaporize you ALL!"
Not only is Wiseman my favorite Sailor Moon Villain he is next to Joker the gvoat (greatest villain of all time) Shao Khan and Darkseid he is my favorite villain because he's a villains villain I miss Death Phantom sobs.

I always thought Tony Daniels was really good, though listening to it here... I notice the the over-reliance on the voice effects and wonder if it would be as good without them. Steve Kramer on the otherhand sounds a bit young but I love his gravely tone and it has a lot in common with Maruyama's sinister inflections. I love it! I like Kramer's voice because it's sinister... yet kind of soothing. It fits for Wiseman since he's evil but a master at makingvulnerable people believe what he wants them to.

I am sorry. But Wiseman's character in the 90's anime is a fucking idiot in the later episodes. He had so much potential and the writers completely wasted his character by making him into a James Bond villain. I mean in the manga and the Crystal version he's not nearly as stupid as he is the later episodes of season two in the 90's anime.
I hate the way Hiroshi Iwasaki voices Wiseman. He sometimes tones his voice to a falsetto tone and it doesn't work well. Eji Maruyama did a much better job. For the ENG voices, it's hard to decide. Tony Daniels did a booming voice that is a lot like what Darth Vader would sound like when angry IMO and it sounds pretty menacing. Steve Kramer did a great job following the original and like the original JP, it sounds really good.
Neo-Xgray87 the thing is, there was many episodes between wiseman's first appearance and second appearance, plus his second appearance was part of the "lost episodes" a.k.a the last 17 eps of season 2 that aired a year after the fact. For whatever reason they started giving wiseman's voice some audio effect that they didn't give him on his first episode.
I’m pretty sure Tony Daniels only voiced him in the first half of R. The “computerized” voice in the second half (which was dubbed a few years afterwards) sounds nothing like him to me.
TwilightLink77 that sounds kinda lame to me. I don't really see the appeal of making a subordinate from a previous series into the next big enemy, plus all of the final enemies should be incarnations of Chaos, as the true malevolent force behind the events, so the idea seems a break from the narrative of the show. Then again, DiC always felt pretty separate from the show's actual storyline to me when I rewatched it a few years back.
Your Bro Tai I always took Wiseman, Metalia and Pharaoh 90 to be essentially constructs on chaos, and that that was why they were abnormal, like how Metalia was a formless swirl of energy and Wiseman was just a cloak over seemingly nothing, while Pharaoh 90 was like a planet of pure malevolence. I think Nehellenia was the poorest attempt as it tried to humanise chaos. I felt there were implications in the first 3 that they were linked by their own non-humanity, because they were in stark contrast to their humanoid subordinates.
I think you should do MIka as well as for this episode Tony Daniels Steve Kramer and Eji Maruyama were awesome wiseman Hiroshi was kinda annoying he could of been better also you can do the girl from the talent show episode cant think of her name and I just watched the episode 2 nights ago but I think you should also do a remake of darian/mamaro without the background music like your doing with rini/chibi-usa
Iwasaka didn't nail Death Phantom character in any thing, in the other side Maruyama did it at the perfetion. They should hier him for Crystal or someone that had a similar voice.
The Viz dub had this strange issue, good actors but a lot of the time they just sounded like they were reading lines instead of acting. The old dub, even if the voices didn't fit and lines weren't right, had actors ACTING.
@@Doomshroom8 Maybe it's just some of the other ones then, like Sailor Saturn. I hated that she had the right voice but stilted acting, while the Cloverway one had a voice that didn't really fit but was acted well.
The bad writing is what made it bad. Wiseman's voice distortion however was something I wish Viz tried a little harder to get across that this guy meant business. I love Steve's work, but they could have made it sound more demonic. Like how the Nine Tails in the Naruto dub sounded.

I am sorry. But Wiseman's character in the 90's anime is a fucking idiot in the later episodes. He had so much potential and the writers completely wasted his character by making him into a James Bond villain. I mean in the manga and the Crystal version he's not nearly as stupid as he is the later episodes of season two in the 90's anime.

I hate the way Hiroshi Iwasaki voices Wiseman. He sometimes tones his voice to a falsetto tone and it doesn't work well. Eji Maruyama did a much better job.
For the ENG voices, it's hard to decide. Tony Daniels did a booming voice that is a lot like what Darth Vader would sound like when angry IMO and it sounds pretty menacing. Steve Kramer did a great job following the original and like the original JP, it sounds really good.

Neo-Xgray87 the thing is, there was many episodes between wiseman's first appearance and second appearance, plus his second appearance was part of the "lost episodes" a.k.a the last 17 eps of season 2 that aired a year after the fact. For whatever reason they started giving wiseman's voice some audio effect that they didn't give him on his first episode.
I’m pretty sure Tony Daniels only voiced him in the first half of R. The “computerized” voice in the second half (which was dubbed a few years afterwards) sounds nothing like him to me.

There were theories in the original DiC dub that Wiseman is Jadeite because they share the same voice actor.

TwilightLink77 that sounds kinda lame to me. I don't really see the appeal of making a subordinate from a previous series into the next big enemy, plus all of the final enemies should be incarnations of Chaos, as the true malevolent force behind the events, so the idea seems a break from the narrative of the show.
Then again, DiC always felt pretty separate from the show's actual storyline to me when I rewatched it a few years back.
Your Bro Tai I always took Wiseman, Metalia and Pharaoh 90 to be essentially constructs on chaos, and that that was why they were abnormal, like how Metalia was a formless swirl of energy and Wiseman was just a cloak over seemingly nothing, while Pharaoh 90 was like a planet of pure malevolence. I think Nehellenia was the poorest attempt as it tried to humanise chaos. I felt there were implications in the first 3 that they were linked by their own non-humanity, because they were in stark contrast to their humanoid subordinates.

Iwasaka didn't nail Death Phantom character in any thing, in the other side Maruyama did it at the perfetion. They should hier him for Crystal or someone that had a similar voice.

As a fan of the Viz dub, I have to say I actually prefer the DiC voice. It's still decrepit, but also intimidating and throaty.
The Viz dub had this strange issue, good actors but a lot of the time they just sounded like they were reading lines instead of acting. The old dub, even if the voices didn't fit and lines weren't right, had actors ACTING.
@@ShadowSonic2 Gonna have to disagree with that. I'm not too terribly interested in elaborating but the main actors in Viz go above and beyond imo
@@Doomshroom8 Maybe it's just some of the other ones then, like Sailor Saturn. I hated that she had the right voice but stilted acting, while the Cloverway one had a voice that didn't really fit but was acted well.

The bad writing is what made it bad. Wiseman's voice distortion however was something I wish Viz tried a little harder to get across that this guy meant business. I love Steve's work, but they could have made it sound more demonic. Like how the Nine Tails in the Naruto dub sounded.
