"Portrait In Black And White" is WOW! There is fantastic elegant sketch, from "dark" to "white" , with "strenuous rhythms", to fascinate us in this musical journey!

This is one of the best Baker albums, it's still available. He went on methadone because Japan was so strict with drugs that everyone was afraid of him getting arrested. when off the heroin he plays like an angel as evidenced by this album.

@@tommackay7433 The teeth incident occurred in 1966, he returned to playing with corrected form around 1973, so anything onward (including this concert from 1987) is post-teeth.

    Almost blue
Almost doing things we used to do
There's a girl here and she's almost you
Almost all the things that your eyes once promised
    I see in hers too
Now your eyes are red from crying
    Almost blue
Flirting with this disaster became me
It named me as the fool who only aimed to be
    Almost blue
It's almost touching, it will almost do
There is part of me that's always true
    Always
Not all good things come to an end, now it is only a chosen few
I've seen such an unhappy couple
    Almost me
    Almost you
    Almost blue

Danko on keys; Engels percussion, Van der Geyn's bass and the fantastic Chet on trumpet and vocals. Costello never did this song of his credit, although, such a wonderfully penned tune. This outfit just produces a sound that melts you away. :)

Tragically he was gone less than a year later. It was not a suicide, he was locked out of his room in Amsterdam and tried to jump from the balcony next to his when he fell. This is a great album, but I'm partial to the young, fragile Chet from the early '50s. .

He was off heroin while in Japan because of the strict drug law, he went on methadone and played better than he had for years according to his bandmates.

    • @WindflowPattern
      @WindflowPattern 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

@@G8GT364CI I can relate to Chet's condition myself, not with heroin, but with cannabis. The thing in common with heroin and with cannabis is that it dilates your veins and changes the blood pressure. I play trumpet as well and in order to be consistent, I have to have full control of my lips and embouchure, plus air control. Drugs work against this. So if i want to have to smoke, i have to do it AFTER a show, not before.
On the other hand, Chet had a troublesome life filled with mental disabilities and lack of support. Like a lot of musicians from that time. To summarize, all his work in Japan is his best work, because he had full control on his talent and abilities, BUT he was battling with addiction and as he said himself in a interview, he had the worst time of his life, and couldn't wait to get back to Europe to get hooked. You can also hear how CLEAR he talks in between songs... not slurring his words like he sometimes did. Hard stuff heroin.

Recorded 11 months before he died, Chet still has it here on his jazz trumpet though his voice is a bit lower in pitch. Nice bass solo by Hein in For Minors Only. Love Elvis Costello's Almost Blue, which Chet plays and sings -- lovely. Chet's voice may have been better in earlier years but he does just fine on these 2 track, especially on Almost Blue. This is a compilation of 2 tracks so I'm not sure when the second set was recorded, nevertheless, Chet was a very gifted artist. So are Danko, et al.

His solo in Arborway was unbelievable on this, when he went on this tour of Japan the drug laws were very strict over there so he went on methadone and didn't touch any heroin all the time he was there. His bandmates said he played better when he was off the dope there than he had in a long time and credit his stellar playing on this album to his staying off of it but he couldn't wait to get out of the country to get it again.
