I met Freddie at 2 different periods and hemispheres, the first in 1967 in London, the second in Sydney, Australia where I live now, 1982. Th first time I had been playing barely 2 years and thought I was G-d's gift to the trumpet. Given his fearsome reputation for demolishing pretenders , especially white ones, he was surprisingly gentle and when I met later he seemed impressed that I had stuck with it.

Was lucky enough to see him live in the sixties with joe henderson at the lighthouse in hermosa beach california and in the seventies in vancouver canada. Thanks for posting this later album i've never heard before. Great rhythm section...billy childs very underated!
I would've loved to have seen him in person but I am glad to have knowledge of this man's great skill and mastery of his kraft.

Just listened to couple other Freddie Hubbard albums on youtube and started this one and was thinkin of changing it up and then Gypsy Lament happened and I was like "nope I'm finishing this album just to find out what they do next!"
Recorded in Japan too? Makes me wanna know more about the whole thing. Like is there a book that covers this? a documentary? Because there needs to be one.

I've always avoided this album thinking it was after his lip injury. He certainly rose above it for this gem! I'm sure the mute helped a bit too...

The mute is signature miles davis. The album is in honor of that signature and was made manifest within six months of Miles' transition.

I always loved Freddie Hubbard, but found this album he uses too much vibrato for my taste. But still, anything he does is superlative.
