Thank you for this video. I was taught by my grandfather, master chief petty officer in 3 wars. The old style stance is how I was taught. Side stance, butt stock firm in the shoulder, almost a limp front arm tucked in to the chest just to support the rifle. He taught my mother as well in rifle school. She has several medals in sharp shooting as an adolescent. I definitely need to learn how to hold my AR 15 differently. I changed up the stance for shooting my 45-70 because of the recoil. I love the first day of Jiu-Jitsu reference. Definitely finesse and muscle memory way more than man handling your opponent.

Thank you brother for guidance. I bought the m4 carbine and today I went to shooting range first time and I tried fire I made the video and posted in group and people laugh at me how I was holding it now I will try your position. Thanks for making it lots of love and blessings from Pakistan
Excellent explanation. Thank you. Question: I've noticed many military folks will use a 2 point sling and when entering "fight" mode will clear their support arm and kind of use the sling from a "neck hang" position. Would you be willing to do a short video on this sling use, theory, setup, and best practices?
Military here. We run a 2 point sling 90% of the time because it's way easier to sling the rifle behind the back or keep it tight to the chest when doing pretty much anything (lifting, prepping defensive positions, detaining individuals, etc...). We're usually not engaged at distances so close we have split seconds to shoulder our rifle, unless you're spec ops or something, so it's not usually an issue having to clear the sling first before returning fire.
Only time i ever used a two point sling was with the m249. For the m4 i modified my three pointer to hold the rifle tight to my chest, and when unclipped it was attached by a single strap from the stock to my firing shoulder with the sling forming a loop around my chest under my support arm, letting the rifle hang straight down at my side. Clipped was for on the fob and unclipped was for out in sector. Your sling and how you use it was one of the few things each individual had free reign to do what worked best for them.
"Old hunting stance" Thaaaat's my problem! My AR always felt strange in my shoulder, but now I know that's it's because I was holding it in the same stance I used when I did olympic rifle. Thanks for the tips, John. Very helpful.
Wow I've got some habits to change: 1) I'm a photographer who has used big lenses on monopods for 30 yrs, my arms are as close into my chest as possible to minimize shake, & my left hand is cradling bottom of the lens. Now I need to change the use of the entire left arm. 2) Former Olympic style fencer, always turn sideways, knees bent, front foot pointing forward & back foot pointing to side, taking quick little steps. Thanks for the tips, only had to qualify shooting once a year in the AF, didn't teach any of this.
Yes he is good at his job that is for sure. It’s good for the gun community that he shows us what took him years to learn and perfect. Thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍🏻
I live in the part of Illinois where there are more firearms than people politicians from Chicago are afraid to come this far south in Illinois because of that reason, but we take gun safety very seriously and teaching our kids how to handle and use a gun properly and watching videos like this one helps to get out of old habits with aiming and sighting my carbine, but with my pistol I just use my front sight getting ready to go to a laser sight since I have a astigmatism and I practice shooting with both hands, because I'm right handed and left eye dominate.
Good advice thanks for sharing your knowledge. In my great patriotic state of Kentucky passed the constitutional law 2 yrs ago that we no longer have to hold a permit or license to carry conceal anymore. And we allways been able to open carry any firearms we want. I thank God every day that I live in a state and country where I can protect my family with deadly force if justified. 🇺🇸
This is why I was always comfortable holding the rifle closer to the magazine well with my forward hand (22 years as an Infantryman). I have been seeing the forward hand out quite a bit and Ill give it a whirl. Good video!

I love this guy man, he's flat out entertaining while being informative. He's your perfect example of the duality in man. I hate to use the word "sweet" for a hardened military vet, but when he's talking about random subjects he's seems like a genuinely nice gentleman. Almost docile, but the pure enjoyment in his eyes causing even the slightest discomfort to an individual or the passion when demonstrating defensive tactics proves you don't have to be a douchey asshole to be a bad ass. Sorry for talking about you John Lovell like you're not here sir, you have the qualities I would've followed to hell and been excited to go. Hoorah
Hey John, This may be the very best video on this subject I've seen. Especially squaring shoulders / hips to the target and why... And the death grip / tremor bit. Thanks!
Sir, a question. in 2011 I was involved in an accident that damaged my L5 and L6 thoracic vertebrae resulting surgery. the legacy I'm left with is holding both arms out in front of me causes pain which can be overcome but also numbness and loses of muscle control in my hands and forearms. I have modified my stance to exactly the wrong way of doing it, left foot forward, support hand pulled back under the hand guard grasping the mag well, etc. This is the primary reason I haven't gotten more serious about a rifle training course. it would be unfair for me to expect an instructor to spend time with me trying to work around my issues while the rest of the class is getting it done. The question, are you aware of training or instructors that work with these kind of issues. I don't think of myself as "disabled" as there are people with bigger challenges than holding a rifle. I go to work every day as a heavy truck mechanic I just do things differently. any input you might have would be appreciated. I have no illusions that I'll ever be a professional door kicker, I don't even consider myself a tactical guy I would just like to become better at moving with a rifle and shooting accurately at "speed"
Bryan Saunders tbh I almost guarentee like 99% of the well respected courses would work with you in a class. You'll be training in unconventional ways in tactical courses anyway so you may even have a leg up on other guys who are 100% able bodied but have only ever shot with their primary hand in a conventional "gun range" ways. Give some of the places you're interested in a call. I bet they'll have no problem accommodating your needs and getting you speedy in no time!!!
Bryan Saunders Prolotherapy, and if money is available, steroid therapy, even stem-cell (I didn't say amniotic). The good news is medicinal technology, especially with respect to muscular-skeletal pathology and injuries is advancing at such a pace that I sincerely believe that if you consult the right physician, you'd be on track to increased comfort and mobility. Best of Luck!
If holding a handgun or rifle becomes painful in a way that leave you feeling unsafe to defend yours and yourself with a firearm then I highly recommend you acquire an M67 frag grenade and a can of bear mace. If a home invader or attacker makes themselves known, simply produce the frag grenade in your off hand and hit the bad guy with a loud "Allahu Akbar". This will stun the bad guy for at least 3 seconds, as his synapses will short circuit from the shock of such a sight and he must quickly reboot to process what is going on. In this time frame, produce the bear mace in your strong hand and light the bad guy's face up with the unholy hellfire of spicy whipped cream from the bear mace canister. This will incapacitate the bad guy immediately. The evil substance in the bear mace canisters makes Kodiak bears shit themselves just from thinking about it. Now he is at your mercy. If you want to be merciful, replace the bear mace canister with a sidearm of your choice and send him off to the next world. If you want to make an example of him, replace the canister with a taser and let the bad guy ride the lightning. The police will haul him off for many years of being Big Cock Joe's bottom bitch in Cell Block D and you'll have a clean conscience. I suggest an authentic M67 frag grenade because I don't know where you live. If you leave in a shithole like Detroit, then you'll be faced with multiple armed attackers and it's best to take them all out with you. The old standing remains, better to have and not need than to need and not have.
MajorArtillary sure sounds great. Can I get that m67 frag grenade in the sports section of my local Walmart? Or do I need to actually befriend a jihadi from Afghanistan? Thanks!
In regard to grip fatigue, that's why you should use a full vertical foregrip a little bit back on your rail. Full vertical foregrips allow you to aim your rifle while relaxing your wrist, and it gives you great recoil control. I know the military uses them all the time but for some reason they are really unpopular in the civilian market. Also it looks like you may be able to extend your buttstock a notch or two.
Semper Fi Marine !! I carried an M-14 with a starlight scope , clumsy as heck but saved my butt. The m-16 had jamming issues back then from the ball powder in the rounds and had a plastic bipod with a Mattel symbol on it. Made me laugh. I appreciate this channel as we seem to have the same viewpoints. Welcome back to the world.
4:40 - I've taken a lot of classes and I've always resisted being square in favor of my boxing stance, which is more diagonal to make yourself a smaller target. Maybe for a pistol that is still OK, but you have totally convinced me when it comes to the rifle. It makes total sense, and now I have to decide if it's worth it to have one uniform approach or have one light and one heavy. I do archery, so I'm really used to standing sideways. Idk.

Clipped was for on the fob and unclipped was for out in sector. Your sling and how you use it was one of the few things each individual had free reign to do what worked best for them.
just found your videos, binged watched about an hour. I love the comments from all the couch warriors who have no experience.
Thank you for clarifying 'gun safe, no one behind camera' etc. Very wise and helpful for those who don't know gun safety.
"Old hunting stance"
Thaaaat's my problem!
John ,that was a great instructional video. Been shooting and training my son for years and you showed me things I did not think about Thank you.
You've been shooting your son for years?
why bother training him if you were just going to shoot your son?
Don't talk to me or my son ever again.
What , like pointing a gun without checking it............. HELP
Love your videos. Thank you for your support and efforts in educating the gun community for free. A very honorable thing to do.
Basic mechanics are where most people struggle. And yes, there's a big difference in battle posture and range posture. Good stuff today
From a LE certified firearms instructor/range master, good points all around. Nice job.
That was an incredibly focused and informative 10 minutes, thank you sir!
excellent instructional information thank you
FEMA Resident #20314: great lesson on mounting long black rods... get your hips and shoulders straight on and mount that rod!!!!! Bwahahahaaaaa
Solid work here. Clear and precise. Thanks for this. Keep it up!
It's fascinating that almost all of this seems to be very common sense, once you're made aware of it.
I must be getting old, the whole time I'm thinking... Man, someone really needs to sweep that floor...
He got rifle skills, let’s see broom skills!!
I’m old too!!
There's a guy on TV holding seminars for people who are turning into their parents. No, really, I've seen it. ;)

This is why I was always comfortable holding the rifle closer to the magazine well with my forward hand (22 years as an Infantryman). I have been seeing the forward hand out quite a bit and Ill give it a whirl. Good video!
Man I'm only 19 but a huge fan of your work and although young I really try to perfect my firearm knowledge and skill. Going to a prep school for the military academies right now, but when I hit 21, I know whose classes I'm taking during the summer!
The mere fact that John has to actually say, “ i’m not pointing at you, because you’re not here“ is such a sad commentary about TH-cam subscribers and the garbage haters love to write in the comments section!!! Lol
This was actually the first time I've gotten an adequate explanation on the front hand placement. I wish I had seen this video 10 year ago.
I'm definitely getting me an AR-15 style rifle now. Thanks for the tips.
did u get 1
@@chrisfalcon9109 I hope he did, it's not looking good nowadays!
Indeed.
You may get one but you’ll pay $1500 for it.
@@DontLetTheOldManIn I got oneeeee!
Just bought my first AR and I really appreciate this video.
Best basic instructional I've seen cheers. Found again after I realised YT was blocking notifications!
“I’m not pointing them at you because you’re not...well you’re not here.” Hahaha
good stuff
New Here! Mrgunsngear Helps me know this is some legit info and channel! SUBBED!
rednecklowlife, no disrespect to you or Mrgunsngear; but John Lovell is legit, all on his own. You need to check his pedigree.
I don't doubt it! Some how he is new to me!! And seeing Mrguns watches his stuff. I knew with out further review. That Mr Lovell is good stuff!!
Mrgunsngear Channel thanks bro
John Lovell: ooooh so now you're trying to pick up guys to get together and mount some rods? Fondle those rods!!!! Bwahahahhhhhhaaaaaaa
Thank you! Some of the most valuable and practical information I have ever heard. Again thank you
Absolutely!! Just seeing this but it is how we were taught when I was a federal agent.....of course, it comports with my time in the Corps. Great stuff! Thank you.
The fact you verbally release aggression with a shout while changing positions is awesome!
HEY DON'T POINT THAT AT ME!!!
same
Idk if ur a troll or if you're dumb but it's an AR-15
so you want to know the specs? Bc the model is 15
Mr Tomatoface yes indeed, teeeeerrible muzzle discipline.
I had the same feeling xD
I don't need any of this info... I have a scary, black, ghost gun with a 30 caliber magazine clip which will disburse 30 rounds in half a second. I don't need any skills, this rifle will assault people on it's own!
bet you don't get one shot on target unless your 15ft away
@@robertotrejo1262 This is a scary, black, ghost gun... it will assault anything that approaches within 1 mile square radius and they will drop dead!
@@boardguy4075 if you shoot 60 rounds in 1 second 99/100 you wouldn't even come close to 8 feet from me in one second from a mile away your 1st bullet wouldn't even hit til like 2 seconds and a half and wouldn't nearly have as much velocity to do damage past 500-800 meters and argueably my .308 can shoot more accurate straighter faster and semi auto dmr will always be better then. 30 caliber after 700m
308 hit a mile and a half in less then one second all it takes is one shot from big boii gun ;)
your 1st bullet out of 60/ second wouldn't even be twice the time one mine would hit. before you could pull the trigger and your ghost gun just as worthless as your knowledge to long distant shooting.
fully auto + mile away xD
someone take this guy to get some training to know what he's talking about.

MY GOODNESS!!!! This is one of the absolute BEST AR- "How to" videos that I've seen yet! Mr. Lovell you're a great teacher if i do say so myself. I've just started to follow on TH-cam as of today! I saw you live with Colion Noir and loved your energy man! (No HOMO) keep up the Excellent work and I look forward to your next video!....
best channel on TH-cam
Thank you for fully explaining the difference between the defensive and the precision stances. Only learned and have seen the other way, so very happy to hear the reasoning behind the technique!
I love my AR. Sometimes I sleep with it when my wife kicks me into the spare room. Seriously though, great vid as always.
Who lets their wife kick them out of their own bedroom lol
John....Thanks for a great lesson.....learned a few things today and that always makes me feel good.....⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
like the POINT WITHOUT CHECKING........ feel good....... your a idiot
Hoorah
Hey John,
This may be the very best video on this subject I've seen.
+jam34786 agree with jam

Really great tips, thank you brother. From a UK veteran 🏴🇺🇸
Idk.
Very energetic, informative, clearly instructive. Amazing! Thought the art of teaching was all but dead. Thank you that was refreshing!
Love your videos Brother, Keep it up. May God Bless you and keep you and your Family Safe.
All my life I have been an accuracy/distance shooter and I never actually thought about my stance when it would come to defense.
Your joking right ?
More in depth than what we taught privates in basic training but right on. Good to know I was teaching them right.
Good to know. I haven’t taken AR15 training yet, but I noticed my handgun grip and trigger control seem to carry over fairly well.
I found this video to be extremely relevant, useful, educational and enlightening. You provide eye opening, top notch training. Wish I could afford to be trained by you in gun handling.
