I can't tell you how much I appreciate this video. I have had a passion for firearms since I was young. But because I had an alcoholic father who was absent most of my life and no grandfather, I have had to learn everything about firearms myself. With your help in this video, I now feel confident in sighting in my new AR-15! Thanks!
Tyler, man - hearing your story... rock on! Stay focused, stay curious, ask questions and seek out people who know more than you do - and you will get where you want to go.
Yes, more videos on anything to do with USING firearms. I'm sick of all of these gun views, newest flash light reviews and all this junk. They are okay every once in a while, but I like training videos and informational videos were I am actually receiving knowledge from the video. Thank you Reid, you have been my favorite instructor for a very long time. Can't wait for more videos.

By the way, there are many stories like this one: tmd.texas.gov/airmen-beat-army-peers-in-annual-best-warrior-competition
Sure we had to qualify, and as a First Sergeant , I also had to be an instructor, and a range officer. During Viet Nam, when flying the C-130's we had a rack located behind the flight Deck with M-16's. In all of my flights, I never had a reason to take one from the rack.
Let's not kid ourselves...the average airman will rarely, if ever, handle a rifle. Sure, on youtube you'll always run into the "I was a super duper Halo Jumper", but in real life that's hard to find
If you really want contrast, touch up front sight with a light coat of white enamel, let dry, then a light coat of bright enamel orange, let dry, then a coat of clear finger nail polish. It stands out against any background even autumn. I did this on a very small ball about 1/3 the width of the stock front sight for pin point accuracy using the small aperture.
Thank you! Im 36 and been out of the Corps for 15 years. Going to the range and I forgot how to zero correctly. Do you have any idea how embarrassing it would be, if the one Marine in the group to not know what he is doing? 🤦♂️
35 years since in the army and just got back into rifle shooting and have been watching all the sightings videos and still embarrassed I forgot how to do this
I already know how to zero a ar 15 and the m 16 i don't need know one to teach me that i was in the military and the ar 15 was used in Vietnam and the military replaced it with the m16 a much better rifle than a ar 15 the ar 15 was not a very good weapon at all that why the military replaced it the m16 is basically the same weapon
Only thing is at 50 yards that group has to be much tighter. They will expand when they continue down range to 250 yards, The 50 yard group should be no larger then a silver dollar. Unless your hunting Indian elephants and just want to hit them somewhere. That setting is ok for 300 yard battle sites and for spraying bullets but if you want to have one shot one kill they won't cut it.
I am a older man that cant take the weight and recoil of 30.6 308 anymore. Just now getting into AR15 platform this video helped me very much!!! Thank you very much will be watching!
A torch lighter won't blacken anything since the flame's so clean. You need something like a Zippo or a candle, something that burns with a dirty flame and produces soot.
He mentioned the Marines as if he was one. Don't know either way but I was one from 1965 to 1975. He's got basic battle sights set up there. Not that he'd ever hit anything at 300 yards with them. That group at 50 yards has to be the size of a nickle if you want to be pretty sure the round is gonna be within a foot of what you want to hit at 300 yards not including adjustments for windage at that distance
This is SOOOOO grass week boot camp. I am glad I watched and got recalibrated. Thanks much Reid. I would love to train with you (a fellow Belleau Woodsman) sometime soon.
I've always used iron sights and have used a 50 yard zero for about 10 years. It works! Just make sure to bottom out your rear sight before you zero (if you can).
Super straight forward. Much appreciated, man. I had a little trouble estimating how many clicks to use when adjusting my sights but you can download that US Army manual for zeroing, and it has some useful worksheets to help convert those "inches off target" to "clicks on your sight."
I just built my first AR and I am having trouble with setting up my iron sights/red dot before I go to the range and will probably adjust the sights once I go out but your videos are very educational and appreciate your videos/teaching. I am new to the gun communities and learning a lot. Thank you Reid!
Precise education on an important topic. I do not use anything but steel sights and thought I had to resight every 50yrd distance. Thanks my friend for the time put in on this video.
Superb video. While I'm definitely not new to the firearm world, I did however just purchase/build my first AR-15 and had little clue on how to zero my irons. This video helped immensely. Next up, zeroing my Vortex optic.
Great video, thank you. It's been a very long time for me sighting in, but this video brought it all back quickly. Went to the range after watching and zeroed it in perfectly with 6 rounds. Again, great job.
Thanks bud, 9 shots is all it took. been out twice before with no luck. The breathing folks, and finding the natural point of aim. Excellent tutorial thanks R.H.
I use the same method, though I start with a bench rest, and a AR front sight tool. was using the same Magpul MBUS, but switched to Magpul MBUS Pro LR. has an elevation adjuster for shots past 200 yds. Awesome rear sight cost more that the MBUS but worth its weight in gold(also doesn't spring up like the MBUS but does fold down for a lower profile.SOLID. Nice Work on video!!

Hi Reid, since you are a former Marine, I was wondering if you have heard of the Santose Improved Battlesight Zero system developed by Marine Lt. Colonel Chuck Santose, or its follow-up, the Revised Improved Battlesight Zero (RIBZ)? It allows zeroing of the standard AR15 carry-handle sight (8/3) or removable carry-handle sight (6/3) to be zeroed at 25, 50, 100, and 200 yards, while still retaining the std. elevation wheel settings from 300-600/800 meters.
