Update!
I spoke with John from DF regarding the LOD having been reduced, and this appears to be a bug. I still have to test this but supposedly this might be related to having the game installed on a secondary m.2 instead of the default storage on PS5. If so, I'll forward this info to insomniac for a possible fix.
Good morning everyone! Glad to finally get this video out - I've been sick the past 3 weeks now which has made it difficult to record my voice and concentrate on editing. The game is fantastic and was a nice distraction. This was also an interesting video to put together. I've got hundreds of clips recorded here that I couldn't fit in, so there's a lot more to see! Stay tuned for more content in the near future :)
👍
Hope you feel better Nick! Can't wait to see more content from you 👋😁
Why didnt you mention that the polygon count and geometric density is exactly like the last game meaning this game is basically a ps4 game graphically?
Why didn't you make a review

I feel like these compromises in certain areas were absolutely worth it, especially considering how they were able to get raytracing running on the performance mode
raytracing was on performance mode too in the first game
@@midarchthey added RT performance mode on the Remastered version and Miles Morales, but now RT will be on regardless of the mode
@@midarch Nah that isn't true. RT was added to the remastered version which is not available on PS4. The "first game" denotes the original Spider-Man PS4.
@@tylergrissom9357 a remaster does not change the fact that its the first spiderman game by insomniac, and there is a mode on that game that has ray tracing on at 60fps. furthermore, if we contextualize ourselves with the video it would make much more sense that im refferring to the ps5 update.
Might even be fixed with the day 1 patch tbh
I think you can truly feel the difference only when they're side by side but that's not a bad thing, it just speaks to how good the first one was made.
Edit: for people saying it’s a bad thing guys we will never see that big of a leap in graphics anymore between generations. We’re already at almost photorealistic levels so of course now only small details will improve
It is a bad thing, because it's release on 2 different generations. And you may say that is remastered version of the first game, but still.

Damn the time of day being fixed seems like a huge oversight. In Miles you could even control the weather. They need to bring that back in an update, especially now that they've improved the nighttime look so much.

As Peter becomes consumed by the symbiote, the sounds of the city become muted. It's very eerie, and so well executed.

I know I'm not alone in saying this, but seriously MJ's character model in Spiderman 2 feels a little off, almost a little unsettling sometimes.

Yep, that's why they need makeup.
MJ didn't just age a couple of years. It feels like she went to her 30's.
Karens age faster
Some people do age like that so it’s not that unreasonable
@@collieee2957 I guess, but why this factor? She wasn't even in her mid 20's lol. Peter stayed the same as well as Miles. But MJ aged 10 years. Looks like a soccer Mom in her MID 20's.
@@awsomeboy360 haha, yeah I really don’t know why they would do that in a video game but it doesn’t bother me tbh
Late 30s
You probably get this a lot but I really appreciate the professionalism and attention-to-detail as you meticulously go through everything the game has to offer. Just a question from me as this is a little concern I had with the game - how did you find the overall pacing and length of the narrative, did it feel rushed or was there enough time to explore the content of the plot?
Pacing and narrative felt great. I never felt bored with the story but also felt like I was given plenty of opportunities to screw around and explore New York between missions without it feeling out of place. It's overall very well done. I think the story plays it safe, as did the first game (probably because they're limited in what they're actually allowed to do with licensed characters like this), but it's way better than most of the marvel movies lately.
Why did everyone have this concern about pacing in the game? I’ve been seeing it everywhere but no idea where it came from
@@SILK97 For me personally it came from the knowledge of the length of the game. I heard the game was around 15-20 hours to beat which is on it's own not a bad thing and is similar to the length of the first game. However, this game seems significantly bigger than the first game with the amount of plot points and characters it has introduced and continnued from the first game - therefore, I thought trying to fit more into the same amount of time might lead to the game feeling rushed to an extent.
@@Nick930 'way better than most of the marvel movies lately' nailed it couldn't agree more
@@Nick930nick talk me good news
You really deserve much more credit than right now, your videos are so full of detail that covers everything we would've wanted to see in a comparison
The Chrysler building is my favorite building in the whole world. To me it's a way more iconic NYC landmark than the Empire State building. When they removed it, that honestly made me more upset than Peter's face change. I specifically adore the scene in Raimi's SM1, when Ben had just died and Peter was just sitting on one of the eagles, processing his loss
Yeah it blows they had to remove it. I wish they'd at least tried to replace it with something more art deco
Out of interest, why do you like it so much?
To me it's always just looked like every other boring American skyscraper.
@@SMthegamer1 I mean, compare it to the Empire State building. The latter is just kind of a tall blocky building that narrows to a boring looking lightning rod. The top of the Chrysler building has those beautiful art deco arches with a pattern of triangle shaped windows, that narrow to a magnificent stinger, and below you got the patriotic eagle gargoyles coming out of the corners. It is a true work of art.
damn they removed it?
@@more_less Yep. The owners of the real Chrystler building revoked the right to use it in a videogame. For some reason.

19:05 ey, lining up narration with the background gameplay, nice job!
Great video Nick, I was only kinda suprised that you forgot to mention the suit damage to each model... or did I just missed it ? Its possible. :DD
Another detail that you didnt seem to mention, it appears there are also more new car models (only saw 3) and some new and overhauled boat and ship models in the waters surrounding the city.
@Nick930 A comparison of the 2005 King Kong movie game to the newly released and highly derided Skull Island: Rise of Kong game would be interesting to see.
Never played the 05 King Kong game but it looks better graphically and gameplay to the new one which is crazy to me.
Rise of kong was graphicaly made the way it is on purpose which is clear to see so comparing graphics is pointless tbf but gameplay wise 2005 king kong slays easily
i kinda like the autumn setting of the first game , the colorful trees looked nice
I can‘t imagine the work you have to do for these videos. Godd Job!
They have to add a time of day changer , staying at that daylight setting after beating the story is crazy
Ideally I'd want a normal day/night cycle, switching manually is immersion breaking
@@SMthegamer1 for you, maybe, for others its great to have a choice of what time of day they would like to play at, personally love how the game looks at night, it was killing me that it was stuck in day time. though it would be nice to have an option for natural day/night cycle too.
@@nightwing6287 Sorry I should have gone into more detail, I'm not saying there shouldn't be an option to manually switch, it's something I use heavily in games that implement the feature for photo mode and it was sorely missed in my Platinum Spider-Man 2 playthrough.
I'm saying by default there should be a natural cycle, with the manual option being something the player chooses to use similar to the first game (never actually checked if it was in Miles' game) but is not required to change it at all.
Thank you for uploading this so quickly!
This video is actually very in-depth compared to other videos just focusing on all the bugs and things that were removed.
They changed the anisotropy on the default suit to be more like the pre-release suit from the first game. The anisotropy made more sense on that pre-release suit because of the ridged texture pattern of the material. When they changed the pattern to hex shapes, the specular highlights bent in multiple directions, resulting in the more even lighting we saw in the release version of the default suit from the first game. I guess they just decided they preferred a silkier shine on top of the hex pattern this time around.
Those changes to MJ ...
She let herself go after black cat died lol
@@tylerthere5832 Black Cat didn't die.
Amazing comparison, nice job Nick
27:20 about the suits… in the previous game you can use any suit ability on any suit. So for example if I want the Iron Spider tendrils on the 2099 suit you can do that Spider-Man 2018 as well as Miles Morales.
LOD distance really seems to be a bug. It looks a lot better when I'm playing. And my first impression starting the game was that when looking over the city or swinging/flying high, it looks much more detailed and varied in the distance than before.
Maybe. My first thought was that the downgrades allowed for faster loading. When you fast travel, switch Spider-Men, get thrown half-way across the map by the Sandman, etc, the game covers a huge distance with no loading screens or stutters.
dual sense features are also improved. breaking sandman crystals is very satisfying
good job bro, this is a well written and informative non spoiler direct comparison from the OG(that's you).
The parallax mapped rooms in the windows of the buildings have also been upgraded. They also have moving people in them! I'd love to know how they managed that.
df’s video gives a possible explanation
It is cool I guess, but it doesn't work realistically since it looks like there's apartments in every building, including police departments.
Insomniac Games uses a system of ray-tracing fake rooms that are buried underground in the city. This is to make sure they’re nearby to be called when needed. Each fake room has a basic layout and then different variations on furniture and characters.
When Spider-Man looks into a window, the game uses the ID of that window to randomly select one of the fake rooms to render. The game also casts rays back through the window to get a sense of the key light and shadows, which are then used to light the fake room. This system allows Insomniac to create realistic interior reflections, even for windows that are side-by-side. It also allows them to add details like animated ceiling fans and NPCs watching TV.
This is pretty cool and very smart because it helps the game load faster. The fake rooms are located underground in the city to save performance. The game only needs to render the fake rooms once, and then it can use them for all of the windows in the city. The rooms are not as detailed as the game world, but they are still good enough to create convincing reflections.

Great video man! Will you be doing a history of Fromsoftware's Souls games? That'd be really interesting.
I can't imagine the amount of work you've put into this. Great video as always!
You may not have the deep technical know-how of Digital Foundry (which can always be learned). But your sharp eyes for details are often more impressive than DF.
This comparison series has become more and more refined and professional as a result of your efforts. Dare I say it's actually a must-watch for any graphics-conscious player.
Thanks for making these, great stuff.
This is why I watch both channels
honestly, I really like the lighting in the first one compared to the second one. Especially with cutscenes.
Hey Nick, great comparison as usual, but what do you think about the sky boxes in the sequel? They are hugely updated imo. Especially that ( blue mixed with orange ) sunset.
It’s something about the first one that can’t be replaced
I kind of find it interesting how some put so much importance to shadows, i rarely stop and contemplate my or others shadow when i am playing a video game. I guess for objects it matters more.
i would think that shadows are more in the subconscious, and just give a more lifelike feel to it
So pumped you put this video out, thanks!
Amazing video nick! 🔥🔥. May I know how the dualsense features feel? Your videos are excellent. Subbed! ❤️
I was thinking about this last night actually. The dualsense is subtle but implemented very nicely. You get this nice feedback from the trigger while swinging and light taps while walking. Some interactions have you using both triggers to match a prompt on screen that's interesting. Otherwise, nothing too crazy
@@Nick930 Thanks for the reply! I was really curious about the dualsense, it is gonna be an amazing game. Keep up the great work! ❤️
Great side-by-side comparison, Nick, you covered almost everything.
Insomniac did a fantastic job with Spider-Man 2, not only improving the general visuals (Ray Tracing in all modes) but also keeping the revisit of New York interesting thanks to culling the more boring aspects (like car chases or obligatory random encounters) and adding new features, both in combat but even more so in traversal. When you experience the full powered web suit for the first time it's almost breathtaking at which speed you rush across New York while the engine keeps up those FPS. Sure it costs a bit of detail in far off LOD, but thanks to the more detailed surrounding area on the other side of the Hudson the overall impression is a better one. So far I'm enjoying every moment of it despite having played the previous games twice on PS5 and later on PC. Don't forget to just walk around on ground level, the new overall density feels much more like a vivid metropolis!
The version showing on the screen is sometimes displayed incorrectly.
E.g. at 14:10 you are clearly showing Spiderman Remastered, and at 14:14 you switch to Spiderman 2, but the version in both does not change (it is Spiderman 2 through both scenes).
Whoops. Happens sometimes. Should be obvious to anyone still based on what im saying. I was coughing up a lung while editing so it was harder to focus than usual
@@Nick930 We forgive you... this time!
Somthing totally random, but thank you for lending your voice lol. I had this video playing while I was out on loop and it kept my Corgi calm until I got back haha
I really hope they add in the option to change time of day
Morning, midday, evening and nighttime. Also maybe a continuous cycle of time of day with a dynamic weather option
That construction site from the the first game that had the big set piece was built in Miles' game btw.
Oh and fyi you also could fast travel from the map to specific locations not just from the subways.
Lastly I really love the sound of the wind wooshing by whilst swinging in SM2!
I love this video. This is perfect pre-release hype material.
I've been waiting for this!🔥🔥🔥
Hi Nick, you should also make a video comparing the original PS4 version compared to SM2 on PS5 just to see how much of a difference is between generations
I was waiting for this exact comparison. Did not dissapoint!
i do think people forget we are comparing spiderman 2018 on a ps5 engine fork to spiderman 2 on an improved fork. can you compare ps4 vs ps5??
I actually never noticed that the Chrysler building was replaced in this game or Miles Morales until this video
Helpful comparison video, thanks Nick. I wonder what reason Insomniac has for not including a full day/night cycle like other games, Horizon Into the West? Is it the ray tracing?
I wonder if the remaster or original games had updates to get the visuals to where it is today. Could just mean the launch version of Spider-man 2 might get some as well to get it patched too like the first game to continue improving.
I’m sure it will and probably even a remaster lol

when I pre ordered the game I realized I was not gonna see the wonders of how the game would look at 4k so I actually bought a monitor to play the game at 4k with hdr just so I could actually everything in all its glory. This video (and the video about the remaster and the original spiderman) makes me appreciate getting the higher end monitor and not just settling for my regular 1080p monitor.
I finished the game, did all the side quests, unlocked all the upgrades, and I'm overall very satisfied with the game. The series is starting to feel a bit formulaic now, but it's still a lot of fun. I look forward to where the series will take us in future installments. I just hope they don't go the multiverse route. We've been getting plenty of that with No Way Home and the Spider-Verse movies. There's plenty more you can do in THIS universe without having to resort to travelling through the multiverse. It seems like the Green Goblin will likely be a big antagonist of the next game. Maybe he'll even merge with the red symbiote and become the Red Goblin.
Yeah, we have carnage, Cindy moon, goblin, chameleon (I think) and so many other villans

I think the new crowd density is more realistic, strangers just don't stand that close together unless they're forced to.

Tbh it’s not uncommon to see people densely packed like they were in the first game in NYC. Kinda just depends where you are.
This is such a gorgeous game. I absolutely love it. My only complaint is that it feels shorter than the first. It might be because the challenges aren't all that challenging this time around, and less mandatory collectibles. Also the new traversal is much faster!
Game feels longer for me, side content wasn't all that great. At least, the endings weren't. Mysteriums left more to be desired, all those Spider-Bots just for a cameo most have to look up to know who she is, etc.
@@octolockg5059 Well you can blame the Spider-Verse folks for that. Apparently she was supposed to have a noticeable role in the movie and they cut it.

what happened to the area on the other side of the bridge and where did that island come from? The main part seems to match pretty close but everything beyond is completely different.
The area on the other side of the bridge (Brooklyn) isn't playable/accessible in Spiderman 1, so they were able to use a rough/low quality model of the entire area that just needs to look okay from far. In Spiderman 2 they made a small part of it playable, but obviously not all of it. So they probably had to remove the non-playable areas to avoid having to add 'invisible' walls and so you can't see the low-quality models up close when crossing the water. It's the same reason why most open world maps are on islands (i.e. GTA 5)
It's also the reason why they didn't have all of Manhattan. They excluded the northern portion of Manhattan (everything North of Harlem) because had they included it, they would've had to included The Bronx and it would've been super awkward because the Bronx is closer than Brooklyn or Queens so they definitely would've had to put in those invisible walls.
WOW they changed the color filter! amazing work insomniac!
hopefully they add an update and include the day/night switch feature like the last game 🙏🏽

Now I am dying to see History of Spiderman Games!
I’ll use the Wii remote and Nunchuck
One thing I did find in Spider-Man 2 is that it can seem a lot harder to replenish your health mid fight to the point of being a grind but mastering the parry system is an excellent trade off.
I don’t know if anyone else noticed this, but there is a dock in Miles Moralez that we visit during one of the side missions that is just gone in Spider-Man two. I don’t remember which dock exactly but it’s on the right side of the Manhattan map. The dock used during the mission where you help local business in Miles’s game.
I can’t believe the Chrysler building isn’t in the game. That’s so silly. What idiot didn’t approve the license for such an iconic franchise?

I'm sure the day 1 patch will fix some of these inconsistencies. Might be worth it to compare the game again but with itself once it releases.
yeah i was wondering this too
For different times of day, I've been manually saving during each time of day, and for unique areas too, each a different save I can reload later, including the Amusement Park rides.
Wow, they *really* need to patch in the ability to change time of day
I think they both look amazing. But if I'm to be honest, I actually think the Remastered looks better. Maybe it's just because I'm on a phone, but the only real pro that sticks out with 2 is that it's lighting is far more natural.
that is certainly why....the 2nd game is far superior looking in many ways
The lighting in the remastered is superrrrr hit and miss. Looks great in interiors but if there’s sun anywhere, the whole game is darkened in a botched way
honestly same which sucks as they have downgraded buildings from far away which is what you'll mostly be seeing when traveling/swinging, like at 16:43 one of the best views in the last game looks empty and low quality now
