    This is the 2021+ BMW F 850 GS 40 years edition. Awesome motorcycle with not many flaws - only 1 in fact. A great and appreciated engine and performance upgrade from the previous BMW F 800 GS in my opinion. Now I believe that it's a "complete motorcycle" that doesn't need to ask the big daddy what to do. Let's dig into detail in this video! My Instagram page: / thevtold

    Thanks for the video. I have a 2019 850gs, which I've had for over a year and was purchased as a demo. I thought I would give my thoughts after a year of ownership, bearing in mind am 58 years old with little dirt experience, but over 40 years of riding on the street. This is a heavy bike (504lbs wet), especially moving around the garage with what feels like a high center of gravity when being manhandled. That being said once under way that feeling disappears and it is very flickable on the road and is very stable in the dirt, although It can be blown around a bit on the highway. I'd rather opt for carrying a fuel bladder than go for the extra weight in the GSA model for the occasions where i needed more range. Riding position is upright which is very comfortable, although 6ft 2'' am going to get lower pegs just to make it more so. The rallye seat is not too comfortable for long. The handle bar is nicely placed and the reach is spot on, controls fit nicely to hand, although I tilted the bars 10 degrees or so away for easier reach of the levers whilst standing. Love cruise control, the mirrors could be bigger. The rear brake pedal sits too low and is non adjustable. TFT is the best in the business and I use my phone for Nav, no complaints. Bluetooth works, maybe others don't update their phone. Speed limit info is a bonus. The switchable riding modes are great and I suspect the abs, traction control etc have saved these old bones. I bought a touring windshield, the one that came with the bike is too small, fatiguing on longer rides and doesn't really move the air off the body. I switch back to the small for off road, particularly when its 30c plus here in Canada. The engine likes to be pushed and really comes alive over 4k and up. I generally leave the bike in dynamic mode for the throttle response, however the mapping could be better for low speed in this mode, there is some hesitation, there might be a software update? I don't like the fact the engine is built in China, there is some swarf left outside the block from when they machined it and the cam chain certainly makes noise at idle, which is disconcerting but under way there's no issue. Occasionally I have a problem finding neutral, no big deal. Yeah there is dive from the front suspension when braking and it can bottom out on bigger jumps. This is a big mark against the bike at this price point at the other end the rear electronic adjustable is great and the bike is very smooth on tarmac. I only use the quick shifter on going up the gear box under hard acceleration it disappoints going down the other way. I would not intentionally take it as an option. Maintenance is a little different, two drain plugs for the oil pan as an example and instructions for chain tensioning are more odd than am used to. Big negative on these bikes is they've dropped providing the workshop manual; part of the enjoyment for having a motorcycle is working on it, for me at least and you'd think BMW based in a country with a reputation on engineering and home mechanics would appreciate this point. This is a good comfortable touring adventure bike which is very capable on the road, gravel and fire roads. Its too heavy for single track unless ridden by an accomplished rider and or has a better front suspension. You'd have to compare it with the Africa twin or KTM 790, 890 or 901. I like it, would have a T7, if I could insure two. Hope these comments help any prospective buyer.

    Great review. I bought a F 850 GSA and love it! I commute, tour and run it off road regularly and it fits me great. I had a R 1200 GS prior to this and buying something slightly lighter and more nimble has brought back the joy of adventure riding for me.

      Hey! Interesting to hear this. I can't still made my mind between the F850 and R1250, and most people I've heard of who have switched from one bike to the other have done it from the 850 to the 1250 due to lack of power. Interesting to hear the thoughts of someone who did the other way around!

      Thanks for sharing this. I see that F850GS can give something else than the bigger R1250GS. Perhaps it even makes more sense in the true meaning of adventure that consists in a large part of offroad riding. No question about F850GS being better and easier to ride off the road than the R1250GS. I myself tried both and even though in my opinion it doesn't show on the road, when offroading one may feel more weight of R1250GS.

    I've owned both and still have the F850GS. The 850 is a very different bike from the 800, don't be fooled by the name and minor bump in power. Engine character is what makes the diff and the 850 is fun in any rpm which means it's fun no matter what you want to do. It also sounds so much better, 800 was whisper quiet. Modern tech and lower seat height means it's definitely a modern adventure touring bike. The only benefit the 800 was the engine was happy to crawl in gear 1 without any throttle and you would not need the clutch, great for stop start traffic - I do miss that about the bike. 850 is quite jerky in gear one but you quickly get used to it

    Hi V-told! I have been considering to buy this GS. Will it be comfortable riding 120-140kmph hours? I want low engine sound at that speed and low vibration of course. I will be glad if you reply me. Thanks

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi, since you’re asking for my opinion in regard to those particular conditions then I’d say definitely yes. This is also a range in which GS will be both relaxed (relatively quiet with lower RPM) and in the range of loads of torque, so explosive in terms of performance. Still, as general as it is, it encourage you to call some BMW motorcycles dealer nearby you and take a GS for a spin to spend some time riding 120-140 km/h and see how you like it. I hope this helps.

  • @vinjofin1972

    I think the f850gs fits the bill. Its a solid bike for its purpose. Dont expect it performs the same as a r1250gs. It performs well enough for 95 bhp. If people only focus on pure performance this bike and also the r1250gs arent the choice they need to make. They are better of with a supersport or the s1000xr. The f850gs is for adventure travel wich means sometimes getting of the Tarmac into the woods or sandroad, wich a supersport isnt suited for. Most people buy the f850gs because of 2 things. Getting something lighter, coming from a r1200gs and because the r1250gs is riddiculous expensive. And ask yourself this. How many times you ride 2 up? I dont!

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yeah, if one seeks pure performance, likely no GS is a perfect match. However, the biggest one is the closest to achieving what there is to be achieved. Now the 850 has other advantages like being physically light and having a larger front wheel to better deal with potholes for example. It's also more attractive in terms of maintenance costs. I would be interested to see a 5+ year ownership calculated including the bikes' resale values and having that compared. The big GS keeps its value pretty well, so this would require a quite detailed calculation.

      @@VToldsMotoShow I would like to see that too. On the other hand, looking for a young bmw f800gs you will see that those prices are pretty steep on the second hand market. If I pay a 1000 euro more I have a brand new yamaha tenere 700. Okay lighter engine but fully capable brand new bike versus an outgoing heavier secondhand bike. Choices....

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on how long your legs are. You can measure that actually but the best way is to sit on a bike and try. I'm 183 and I was dealing with F800GS Adventure perfectly. I wouldn't put my feet fully on the ground on both sides I believe but there was nothing uncomfortable for me. I wouldn't sacrifice on bike's capabilities and handling. You're not short and if your legs are of normal length, then don't worry. Off the road, if you stop on top of a rut and cannot reach the ground, you'll go down anyway with or without a lowering kit and on a regular 850 or an 850 Adventure :)

    With same seat height, which bike (850gs vs. 1250gs) is lighter to support with your legs on uneven ground or during stops at traffic lights? Which is lighter to manuever in relatively tight spaces? Which bike is lighter to pick up when it is dropped? Love your videos. Thank you.

    • @VToldsMotoShow
      @VToldsMotoShow  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      As far as stopping and supporting yourself with your leg goes, due to the weight, F850GS is noticeably easier to hold upright to me. Off roading, I'd feel more confident with it as it's physically lighter. As for manuevering, that's a tough call as they're both awesome. I think I'd go with R1250GS thanks to it's Telelever suspension and complete stability because of it. It's more encouraging to me, especially at lower speeds. But F850GS is also pretty good. Picking up - I've got no experience with those two here. On one hand F850GS is still lighter, on the other R1250GS doesn't fall completely flat but at a certain angle as it rests on its cylinders always. So you're not starting all the way from the ground but higher. How it feels in real life - this may be quite hard to test. I hope this helps and thanks for sharing! Cheers!

      First of all, it's all about how long your legs are. If you can lower the seat by 2,5 cm, then that's a lot and if you weren't that super comfortable initially on the F850GS, then this would surely make a lot of difference.

      I feel that the smaller and easier to physically handle, the better for a beginner. In terms of engine and safety systems, this may be one of the best choices. You also sit upright on it and that helps maintain control. On the other hand, as Salman mentioned, weight and height matter too as we all have to learn the new way of using our muscles on a motorcycle. But if you're 190 kg and with a lot of strength, it may just be fine and actually more comfortable for you than some smaller bikes that would make you feel cramped when riding them.

I had to take it to BMW service 5 times in 1 year due to some engine noise that led to engine valve clearance and replacement of engine head cover. The first time it happened around 1000km, it was fixed at 2900km after I sent repeatedly emails to BMW headquarter and now happened again at 8300km. BMW refused to change the engine and also didn’t fix the issue. I’ll be selling this motorbike hopefully this week. I feel sorry because that’s the kind of bike I want, but BMW after sale service is the worse that I ever experienced in my life. I was dealing to upgrade to R1250GS just to get rid of my F850GS. Needless to say that BMW did everything with their disservice to let me change my mind and drop this option immediately. Probably I’ll put my money on a Ducati Multistrada.

      Hi, thanks for sharing that and I'm very sorry that you're in this position with a malfunctioning bike. It should never happen in the first place but once it did, I believe BMW - and any other manufacturer for that matter - should do whatever there's in their power to make you even happier than before. The reality is that at the dealerships and often in the HQs, people who work there are not very excited about their jobs. This usually applies to any brand and company and that hurts. There are few exceptions and finding them makes life so much better. And that's how a customer may become a happy, loyal customer. It's a shame that BMW as a premium manufacturer can screw things up. As you said - in the end of the day they lose too. I hope that whatever you choose next, will reward you with better customer service. It's like winning a lottery ticket though. All the best!

      @@VToldsMotoShow Thank you V for your comment. a few days ago the last straw that broke the camel's back. The new issue I had required to check was a strange "clunk" from the front side of the bike, like a disconnection between handlebar and front dumper. They did not even bother to have their technicians check the motorbike, they briefly rode it (3 mins) and came back saying "the motorbike is fine, you can go." At my request of a BMW Motorrad Service receipt showing what they've done, they simply told me "you don't need it." Once back home, I took the bike to a local, yet super popular workshop, specialized in BMW, Ducati, Suzuki, to have an external opinion. After not even 2 meters, without even rising it, the technician told me that the nut on the handle bar on top of the front dumper, was loosening up and probably would come off if I'd continue to ride it, with risk to my personal safety, especially on the highway. BOTTOM LINE: I called BMW headquarter and demanded they come pick up my bike with a truck. I have requested an immediate replacement with a brand new model reserving the rights of further legal actions. I have no idea as to what will happen next, but it is likely that my BMW experience is completely over, I just had enough.

After months of back and forth they acknowledged that production unit engine was defective and offered me the new motorbike as I had requested for a very small cash contribution. Hi, I think that it actually could be quite challenging when stopping. After setting off, it's going to be always fine on any bike, but stopping and supporting yourself with legs may be hard as this F850GS is a rather tall bike. Sure, you may get a lowered seat and that would be great, but you'd have to have it installed and go sit on it to find out if it's lowered enough.

    Great suspension, comfortable ergonomics, easy to ride, no problem with the 21inch front wheel on a pavemen. However, the engine and the gearbox are a shame. Given the price and the reputation of a premium manufacturer. I do not mean lack of power, regretfully I mean the sound and the way the engine gives off power. The gearbox is a joke as well if you compare it to any mid range japanese competition. The quick shifter is spongy. BMW riders usually do not ride other makes. That keeps them happy.

      Good and great is not perfect. To compare, I'd rate R1250GS as a fully deserved 9 out of 10. Still, it's a personal scale this one here. 7 is really good, 8 is brilliant, 9 is the best. 10 doesn't exist yet. I hope that this explains it. Since none can get a 10, then you may count it as an 8 out of 9 and 9 is currently the top score.

    oh people get caught up in horsepower and performance numbers.. "feel of adrenaline"... this is what makes Ad. junkies get killed on motorcycles. on the road..
    riding on roads is for enjoying the experience ,, nimble in and out of trafic.
    Adrenaline kick you leave for the racetrack.. Todays +100 hp bikes are insane on the road... Imagine the power to weight ratio.. 100 hp on a 200kg bike... In a lightweight 1200kg car would be 600hp.. to get those high power figures a lot of bikes have a really short stroke and a large bore to rev high...
    On the road a square engine is nicer to ride and often has a better fuel economy....
