Been driving my 850GS for more than a year now, and having had R1250GS for some time as well, the 850GS is noticeable lighter when you start driving actively (both on and off road) + its a lot cheaper to get spare-parts. Keep that in mind as well
Your point about ABS is excellent. I have it on my Indian and it probably saved me from laying my bike down when a car pulled out in front of me and almost immediately stopped to turn left. The ABS helped me keep the large cruiser under control as I locked up both brakes. By the way, you handled the situation with the car pulling out in front of you without panicking. You kept your cool. Always enjoy your videos. Ride safe!
My Triumph T120 is the first bike I've ever owned with ABS. Haven't needed it yet, thankfully, but when I tested it by cramming on the brakes on an empty wet road they worked like a champ.
I have not tried an 850GSA, but having owned an F750GS, ridden an F850GS and now switched to owning an R1250GS, I would advise people to think long and hard about choosing the F series bikes. You may be right in your assessment that the F850GSA is 85% of a 1250 and therefore a bargain, but to me it misses a crucial part of the GS experience, which is the front suspension. On the F series bikes the front suspension is not adjustable and not ESA - and for me it's too soft which causes handling issues and significant dive under braking. And I totally agree with you about the weight / centre of gravity. The smaller engined bike may be lighter but it certainly doesn't feel it. Having said all of that, thanks for the video! :D
My daughter suffers with OCD, she has to wash her hands after touching anything and her clothes have to be washed separately otherwise she thinks something bad will happen to mum or dad. Frustration and tears from everyone in the house on a daily basis. Nice review of the bike.
Another interesting review. The one thing that's missing is what this one is like two up and two and loaded. Appreciate that's not easily done for your reviews but it can be a key factor. As the 1250 now has oodles of torque which makes it's significantly different to the 1200 therefore the 850 can't possibly compare.
Big Chandlers BMW show at Whiteways Berryhill Sussex on Sunday. Am 5/10" and my feet were no when near the ground on the 850. A low seat wouldn't even help. So that's a no go for me.
The thing that puts me off is the high c of g . My Tiger Sport great bike until you need to do some slow speed manoeuvre with a full tank. So I am looking at a gs or 790 adv both of which keep the weight low, the KTM is the winner for me at the moment.
I just had a lengthy ride on one of these, not one mention of the continuous flow of exhaust/engine heat pouring directly onto both of my shins. Maybe if you always wear high ADV boots every ride it can dampen the flow of hot air that can’t be minimized. The buzzy nature of the parallel twin which isn’t the worst but isn’t the best either. The crap/unimpressive power in 4th,5th or 6th gear. Sure it seems peppy in 1st and 2nd gear. The engine sounds like it contains extra bits rattling around inside. The exhaust/intake noise is pleasant under hard acceleration and this may be the loudest over stock BMW at idle. The high pitched howling noises from the plastics at speeds between 40-50mph. The ergonomics are nice, but the pegs are placed right where your feet would want to be, so you’ll have to choose in-front or behind the pegs. The TFT is excellent and easy to read at all angles, the controls and switchgear was easily understandable. The seat is good while riding. It has the same plastic hand guards as all other BMW GS’s. But, eh… I’m not getting paid for my review.
short, sweet and gets to the points - even saw your ubiquitous 'white van' ;-) and felt your emotions on the green car pullout - until the next time - Thanks again :-)
Mr. Flyer- The one item which I find is missing from the current BMW GS machines is small, but it would be a helpful thing if they would include some sort of small box or covered crannie where the registration and insurance papers could be kept in a safe and dry condition; it"s a helpful feature to have. (Parenthetically, as you are a pilot I reckon you have to marvel at the skill it must have taken to land that Spitfire perfectly atop its pylon!)
So, feels heavier, chain drive, a bugger to clean. And every day you will ask yourself whether making the saving on the 1200 was worth it! 2 years ago even the GSA spec didn't have outrigged LEDs as they do now. A real positive visibility improvement.

For the shorter legged incidentally the 750 GS might appeal with: 770mm - Low Suspension Kit (Option) 790mm - Low Seat (Option/Accessory) 815mm - Standard Seat 830mm - Comfort Seat (Option/Accessory)

I currently ride a T120 but I'm seriously considering adding a Tiger 800 to the garage. I'm leaning towards the more road oriented version. Which model do you ride?
Very informative as usual MF. I was wondering is the standard 850GS as top heavy as the 850 GS Adventure as I think that bike would probably be the better option for many riders if the weight thing was their major issue. What amazes me is if you look on BMW's website the monthly PCP cost for the 850 is less than half what the 1250 is so for those looking to finance their bike the smaller one could well be the way to go. As an example the 850GSA is £119 a month with a £2451.89 deposit while the 1250 GSA is £174.25 a month with a £2912.04 deposit both on 5000 miles a year. Obviously neither are the bells and whistles models but it does show what good value the 850 is and it might be an idea for you to quote PCP figures as well as the cost to buy outright as many now have bikes on PCPs so this would I guess be useful to a significant part of your audience?

Isn't the engine made in china? That may or may not speak about its quality but it's something one might want to know about when buying a premium german bike.
The GoPro on the windscreen is an interesting view. A little disorienting to look back at speed, but not bad. Better that a tank mount staring up a the rider in my opinion. Also, does "Spitfire" = "squirrel"?
I think the general consensus is you’d be better off with a good condition used 1200/1250 if budget is the deciding factor. They missed the target audience on this one
I agree, way too much money for this sized bike. Would spend my money on a nearly new R1200GS R1250GS. Saving a load of cash 💰 and no nasty chain drive to pratt around with and make the back of the bike dirty. Great review as always Andy. Keep up the good work.
PK Property Solutions LTD I own four bikes but am seriously considering adding one of these. Superior luggage capacity either for shopping or a rideout with my wife on the back - she likes the backrest - to store our helmets & coats. I think the low centre of gravity and small wheels makes for nimbleness around town (this purchase will live in the south of France where it’s mostly 😎 but town traffic is v bad). The ubiquity of super scooters makes mine unlikely to be nicked and the functional finishes are not targets of envy. So you can slide your scooter into the free parking bays with no worries. Finally it’s different than my other machines.
Yes, if I have to choose between this and a used 2017 model GS1200, I would take the 1200. Almost the same price, and you most probably will get the 1200 with all the touring extras and GPS mount thrown in. Which is something worth to note, as BMW is eager to load the price for all those extras, but not so eager to return your investment in those extras when trading in.

Hi TMF, Have you ever compared a BMW with standard suspension to the ESA equipped version?, just wondered as the dealers only seem to have the fully loaded bikes as demo's and always push the same when you ask for a quote, surely non ESA suspension must be perfectly adequate.
finally ridden f850gs adventure it is amazing, superb gizmos TFT display but, it is only one huge downside of the bike sound of cam chain 1,2 gear it was horrible test bike got only 1500 miles on it, sells man confirms this is common of the problem of the engine
Lets hope so as Im after a bike to do some mostly solo touring but with the added benefit of being able to take the mrs every now and again and the price of this loaded compared to its bigger brother is tempting
Good video as always That seems a lot of money for a mid capacity bike with a Chinese engine. No doubt the BMW accountants will develop a pcp deal to make it look affordable.

@@julyorkshire852 Yeah, and that reviewer was 188 cm sothe 850 GS definitely felt small. I'm a little less than you so I'm anxious to ride the Africa Twin.
Balanced and fair review; really like the “5 things” format. That said, and this may not be so fair, I’d like if you ranked the 5 things - or, does each variable have the same weight / importance?
No one:
Green car: just checking if your brakes are working properly sir! ;-)
Luckily they were!
Isn't the engine made in china? That may or may not speak about its quality but it's something one might want to know about when buying a premium german bike.
Engine made by Loncin I believe
Good work...from Greece..
Thank you very much!
Cheers for the bids! Doesn't the camera mounted on the screen get in the way of your fov?
The GoPro on the windscreen is an interesting view. A little disorienting to look back at speed, but not bad. Better that a tank mount staring up a the rider in my opinion. Also, does "Spitfire" = "squirrel"?
Err....no??
Which bike do you prefer; Tiger 1200 2017 or BMW F850GS Rally edition 2019 or Triumph Tiger 800 XCA 2019? Need help!!! Thanks
Easy one - Tiger XCA 2019 - Tiger 1200 and F850GS too heavy for me....
Hi tmf good vlog on the bmw gs my friend is testing the 750gs this week
Leftover 17' Honda AT's now 9k US- is the 850 GSA worth double that?
Good review as always. You showed remarkable restraint that many do not possess. I thought you were off Top Gun training, training the trainees at the mo?
Any vibrations in the bars or foot pegs?
Ha, I thought that too Alex. Great program that, I'm so jealous of those boys and girls with their toys. But when the instructor appeared I actually said out aloud "f**k me, it's TMF!"
@@davidrobinson4118 Yep, me too. It is surely TMF. His cover has been blown. He is a Top Gun Fighter Pilot instructor in his spare time.. Great programme.
A bike, a spitfire and a white van, you spoil us and then as a bonus, white van facts, awesome :-)
I aim to please!
Your own bikes will last forever, they don't wear down much.
Maybe the 750 will feel lighter because it is a bit lower.
If you only would use it for touring and commuting? Would you use this bike or the Kawasaki Versys 1000 or similar non offroad bikes.
I appreciate it has a much smaller engine but wondered if you might review one of the latest Zontes motorcycles? The T310 for example.....
For Long trips, gravel roads, highways and some tractor roads. Would a newer 800/850gsa or an older 1200gs/gsa be more practical/comfy? The 850gsa with the comfort pack age have been my dream bike since its debut. 🤗
I'd have the older 1200 personally - the new 850 is too top heavy for me....
Hi TMF - the new view from the screen looking at you is a good thing! It gives a better indication of your style! Yours aye, Alan. ... ha ha haa
F850GSA now with invisibility cloak 😂😂
Hi. Thanks for the vids. Be interested to know whether your comments about weight of GSA would also stand for the std 850GS sport? Have a 1200GSA at the moment and very tempted by the std 850.
Cool review as always. Spitfire was a part of the plan?
£14k for a heavy 850 bike with a few electronic bits and fancy screen nope , you can get a new Tenere t700 for £8400 which is a lot lighter and less electronics to go wrong , I definitely prefer simplicity and lighter weight and ruggedness for this type of bike.
Servicing costs ?
TENERE 700 review please.
The brakes seem to work quite well as evidenced by the lady at 3:20
Well done 👍 keeping calm when that 🔔 end pulled out on you not so sure I could have
Not a white van out to get you on this video, just a blind car driver. Ride safe.
You know you have a quickshifter right? Lol. I have the same bike and contrary to most opinions it works perfect, even blipping the gas downshifting.
Good evening TMF - i was thinking about have you done a Review on the Benelli TRK 502 X? Yours sincerely The Danish Viking
No I haven’t (yet)....
G'day Miss
Another good review vid.👍
I'm considering buying a white van. Can you recommend a good one??? 🤣🤣🤣
Thanx Cobber
Cheers from the land of Oz.✌
Certainly not!! 😜
😆 the white van banter!!
Nice one TMF, cheers
Would you have the 850 over the Honda AT?
Yes I think I would....
Would you say it’s a good bike for newly qualified motorcyclists
No - a little top heavy I’d say….
Good review all good 👍 Tmf thanks from Danny
Hi TMF,
Have you ever compared a BMW with standard suspension to the ESA equipped version?, just wondered as the dealers only seem to have the fully loaded bikes as demo's and always push the same when you ask for a quote, surely non ESA suspension must be perfectly adequate.
I haven’t I’m afraid Roger...
finally ridden f850gs adventure it is amazing, superb gizmos TFT display but, it is only one huge downside of the bike sound of cam chain 1,2 gear it was horrible test bike got only 1500 miles on it, sells man confirms this is common of the problem of the engine
The 6th thing to know is that its invisible to light green cars !! (Or yellow or whatever colour it was )
👍🏻☮❤
springy 2112 my thoughts exactly. 👍🏻
Is the” 2112 “ a nod to Rush?
@@rumien1383
Yes indeed 🇨🇦
Good man, too band. Still can't beat A farewell to kings. 👍🤘🍺
@@rumien1383
True , Cygnus x1 is epic 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Hmm, so for the price of a 'full fat' 1250, you can have the 'stock' F850 AND a brand new Interceptor. Tempted? : )
I wonder how it would feel 2 up touring compared to its bigger brother?
Alright I reckon!
Lets hope so as Im after a bike to do some mostly solo touring but with the added benefit of being able to take the mrs every now and again and the price of this loaded compared to its bigger brother is tempting
Electric suspension on the rear only
I think I would go for the S1000XR over this, if I was in the market for one of these.
Good video as always
That seems a lot of money for a mid capacity bike with a Chinese engine.
No doubt the BMW accountants will develop a pcp deal to make it look affordable.
Doesn't matter where it's made as long as it is of the requisite quality.
Alex Morgan
Yes I totally agree with you and BMW car and motorcycle engines have had so many quality control issues over the last 10 years maybe Chinese manufacturing is the future.
top man,
I would have been on the horn, as soon as she pulled out! Another for a licence review and revoke...
Interesting option but wonder how this would compare when loaded up with luggage and pillion - to much of a compromise maybe?
I felt it was easier to move around as compared to 1250
Really? Weight carried to high for me...
@@TheMissendenFlyer sorry for the late reply. And I guess it could be that I am used to horsing around a big harley touring bike, so this feels light and easy. lol
That's it pull out don't mind me 😮
Well thanks for the information Andy!! My choice of GSA, 1250/850, just got even more bloody difficult!! Not happy Jan!! Only kidding brother, nice to have a choice available. Cheers mate.
Using the clutch too shift???
Old school
@@TheMissendenFlyer why not use the quick shifter etc is it no good?
Do you ever go in the dirt???
Yep sometimes, check out my off road videos...
Summer it's September 😁
Not when I filmed this it wasn’t!
How about a airplane review next time 😂 cheers
SMIDSY'd by a Citigo, that would've been embarrassing and you'd probably have totalled the Skoda.
Glad you did not promote the "road presence" of the bike - the green car driver negated that point as an advantage, didn't it?
WOW - just WOW!!! Suppose the driver was looking for traffic coming the other way.
18 K for a 850 GSA or you could wait two years for the first PCP deals to run out also the bugs will have been worked out of the electronics you can pick up a good deal.
What bugs,? There are none at the moment
@@12masterr BMW are notorious for electrical problems just ask the Motorcycle SOS recovery drivers i think this model has been on the market for less than 1 year there will be problems.
I missed the awful placement of the nav-system.
Yep,have exactly the same bike and relocated mine to the top with a hornig bracket, In the factory position you have to lock down to see it!
12masterr and a tankbag can’t be used
@@dutchdryfly exactly! I don't know who thought in bmw putting the gps there will be a good idea!
whats the power like , compared to the big gs
The parked white van doesn't count ;-)
Aww....
6. It’s not very visible 🙈
Same price as a Multistrada 950...
Invisible too. Lot of dosh all the same
£18,500 for a fully specified 1250? And the rest... ;)

Very overpriced imho 11k fully specd it would be a real seller and give the competition a run .
i think its only competition for the 1250 gs. if you look at that its not so overpriced anymore xD
