I am just like the woman who you mentioned who was deprived. I have never had much money and I desperately want my family to be comfortable and have enough for their needs this spills over into anything and everything.I guess I am desperately making sure we have everything we may ever need just incase.

I think we underestimate how important evolutionary psychology plays a part. Humans stock away things in case lean times come in which those possessions may aide in their survival. Of course, the worst cases of hoarding where most of the possessions serve no purpose is about people having a hard time letting go, and that includes letting go of emotions and sometimes even trauma from their past. Or because those objects symbolically represent some sort of "value" and since time is money to alot of people, having tons of possessions makes up for the fact they have a limited amount of time left in life. As if having a lot of stuff is going to give them more time. People are anxious not knowing how much time they have to live and having no idea about when the hour of their death will be. Deeply subconscious stuff... People can even hoard money and have very little possessions, all for the same reasons. Because they think a lot of money is going to make up for the uncertainty of how much actual time they have until they die. These things cause people great anxiety and distress.

Well, i'm late to this party but here's a good one for you - i can't let go of the Sunday newspaper funnies! I have a dedicated file drawer where i keep them neatly together and out of the way.
Why do i keep them? .. i've often wondered that myself. I dont want them trashed, used for wrapping paper or wallpaper, i want them kept pristine just as they are. If i donated them to nursing homes, hospital waiting rooms or such they would get thrown out and that makes me feel sick inside. Do i NEED them to survive? no, but yet they seem to serve some strange purpose i cant articulate.
For one thing i love the bright colors, love the funny zingers & jokes, the continuity of the characters, their personalities, their story lines, the creativity of the cartoonist in expressing truth thru humor.
I guess a Freudian explanation for my secret collection is that i have always had an abnormally isolated life, without family or friends i could just have a good laugh with. There's always been much too much grayness, drama, sadness, dullness, seriousness, aloneness and loneliness. People can be very cruel, but the funnies always bring a smile, a chuckle, or good belly laugh. And now thanks to my aging memory everything old is new again, so when i flip thru the older issues i dont remember them so they are fresh and funny again. I think they are a gift from the gifted cartoonists and i choose to honor them in this way. And hopefully in the future when i'm gone, maybe my little legacy of humor will be appreciated by those who find them, and it will help brighten their world a little bit.
