Shock absorbers, bump stops, tops. How to replace any component on Alfa Romeo 147, 156 and GT937.

  • Hello guys! This is the complete procedure for replacing shock absorbers, bump stops and bellows or boots, shock absorber tops or springs in the rear of the Alfa Romeo 147, 156 and GT 937. For the 156 and GT the interior of the car differs a little and with that in the future there will be videos follow-up to show you how it's done.
    The symptom of the car was the rear wheels rubbing against the wheel arches, this happens when the stops that serve as a limiter are no longer doing their job due to age. In this case, the shock absorbers still had salvation because they are like new and that only deserved the replacement of the essentials.

    I followed this video to replace the shocks on my 147. Very well explained! Thank you for the detailed walkthrough of the whole process!
    But I do have a problem after replacing them in the rear. Seems like the top mount of the rear strut is not flush with the body work and if you tighten the nut down it does not press agains the body (in the boot). This means that when wheels are in the air, the whole shock assembly and wheel can move up and down a bit. It doesn't seem right, maybe issues with the top mounts? They are KYB.
    Another strange issue, after the whole rear struts renewing, i get a vibration in the rear right, starting at 40-50km/h and gets worse at 90. Wheel balance is not an issue. What can I look into to fix this vibrating rear corner?

    • @alfaromeonoproblem
      @alfaromeonoproblem  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello. Thank you very much for watching! The fixation of the top mount to the body is only done through the mount it self. The upper plate will not press down the mount to the body, it as to float about.
      Like z it as to work even without the top plate. If it drops off, the mount is not good. I've seen that only the originals are to trust, but they are very expensive.
      About the vibration I believe by your description that you have a broken tire. I have a complete video to determine vibrations.

      @@alfaromeonoproblem Thanks for taking the time to reply and thanks for the link. It was the wheel bearing in the end that failed. It did not have play in it, but it did not rotate evenly thus causing weird noises in the cabin.
      For the top mounts thing, i think they can remain that way if nothing else fails and I don't have to raise tha car often off the ground 😆

    Thank you for another very informative video! I too have noticed the same thing with the top plate having a few millimeters gap to the body on both one of my 156 and GT when rear wheels are on ground. When wheels are off ground, the gap disappears. So good to know the most likely reason is the top mount being bad and not doing its job anymore properly. As a "do-it-yourself" solution, I had an extra pair of used top plates, so I drilled out most of the inner part from them and was left with a "spacer" to put between the body and top plate.

    I like the camera angle you're using. You can see it very well! I'm doing this job currently on my 147. I live in the Rhineland area in Western Germany we also don't really have salt here on the roads as the winters are pretty mild and it's also not as rainy as on the other side of the channel in the UK but the long rear bolts on the right were pretty hard to get out even with an impact gun. Corrosion hasn't been the issue. It looked like it has never been taken off and therefore was very stuck. I used an impact gun a lot of hammering, penetrating oil and even with the torque wrench set to over 200 Nm I had issues. It finally broke lose after at least an hour of hard work. It went with a big clonking sound and I already thought I snapped it but when I took it out I just saw that it has been settled in so much over the years and also had a slight bend. So always be prepared to have issues even without rust. On the other side I didn't have problems with that but the shock strut didn't came out also not because of rust but because the most upper rubber lip of the strut mount was stuck inside the car. I had to cut it around the edge with a knife to get it out. Just mentioning it. Some cars have never been taken apart...

    Very good thorough tutorial, best I have seen for this task. I have had a new pair of rear shocks sat on my work bench for over a year waiting for me to build up courage and time to fit them to my GT. Even though you didn't have problems with the bolts, you filmed the job and explained it so clearly, I think I will give it a try when we have some dry weather forecast here in the UK. Thanks again.

    Miałem problem jakiś rok temu z tylnymi amortyzatorami w mojej 147. Podczas jazdy poczułem zapach palonej gumy. Okazało się, że talerzyki dolne trzymające sprężynę skorodowały do tego stopnia, że z prawejn strony sprężyna docisnęła go do opony 😬 Z uwagi na to, że tak się nie dało jechać, a byłem akurat przy garażu stwierdziłem, że przynajmniej z tej strony wymienię amortyzator sam. Zajęło to 2 dni z pomocą kolegi 🤣 Drugi raz bym się za to sam nie zabierał. Te 2 śruby na dole amortyzatora były tak zardzewiałe, że musiałem je wyciąć. Przy okazji musiałem również wymienić jedną tulejkę wahacza poprzecznego. Z uwagi na to, że nie chciałem go demontować z samochodu to tulejkę wprasowałem podnośnikiem hydraulicznym ustawionym w poziomie i kwadratową stalową ramką 😁 Gdyby śruby szły jak na Twoim filmie robota byłaby przyjemna. Tak czy inaczej świetny film jak zawsze. Pozdrowienia z Polski 👍🏻

      I had a problem about a year ago with the rear shock absorbers in my 147. While driving, I smelled burning rubber. It turned out that the lower plates holding the spring were corroded to such an extent that the spring pressed it against the tire on the right side 😬 Due to the fact that it was impossible to drive like this, and I was near the garage, I decided that at least from this side I will replace the shock absorber myself. It took 2 days with the help of a friend 🤣 I wouldn't do it myself a second time. Those 2 bolts at the bottom of the shock absorber were so rusty I had to cut them out. By the way, I also had to replace one wishbone bushing. Due to the fact that I didn't want to disassemble it from the car, I pressed this bushing with a hydraulic lift set horizontally, a square steel frame and short piece of pipe 😁 If the screws went like in your video, the job would be nice. Anyway, great video as always. Greetings from Poland 👍🏻

    Good video! But before you try:
    -Just changed the rear struts (shocks, springs and flanges) one week ago on my 156 sportwagon. Is a pig of a a job because the two screws holding the shock to the wheel hub are always rusty and stuck. Without an impact gun is almost impossible. Sway bar links needed to be cut with an angle grinder.
