      @GyroCannon Do you find that in some TH-cam videos that the people are talking faster than they used to ? Is it just me ? I'm old, have a slight hearing loss, use CC when available (usually to catch a word here and there due to pronunciation more than volume) but sometimes have to slow it down to 75% to understand what they are saying. Wondering if others have noticed this ? Some people talk a hundred miles an hour.

    as someone who often relies on subtitles, hearing that Dave does all of your subtitles is one of the sweetest things ever. I usually don't need subtitles for most of your videos specifically since you speak very clearly, but it's just so sweet and so considerate that Dave does that. to everyone else who is hearing impaired, or watches videos without the sound on, or just feels more comfortable with subtitles, thank you Dave. it's a small gesture, but it means a lot.

    I've used the garlic cutter before and it's actually very useful! You just have to do it differently than they did in the video. Rather than one bulb at a time with slow jerky pushes, you'd put all 3 in and give it fast smooth back and forth pushes with your full reach. The reason there were different sized chunks in the video was because they put them in at different times. One bulb got chopped 10 seconds, one for 5 seconds, and one for 2 seconds. Of course they're going to look different!

    It's really interesting how there are completely different campfire-bread recipe in the world. In our group I'm always in charge of the German damper version "Stockbrot", which is also out of a simple dough but with yeast and without butter or milk. The literal translation would be stickbread and as the name says you take the risen dough and wrap it around a stick, which you hold over the flames (or even better only the ember) until its done. It's actually not that easy to get a evenly cooked piece, but everyone can make their own and it's a nice midnight activity and snack :)
    And for health concerns because of the sticks: We take of the bark where the dough goes and also hold it in the flames for a bit to clean it.

    I think if it's a gadget meant to "help" someone perform something, like the first one, you should each have a go at it. Because Ann presumably has more skill than the average person, so if a device could be used by someone less skill to accomplish the goal then it would be good. Can Dave chop the onions as well as Ann or better than the device? Having both people are different levels testing a device will give a better representation of whether it is good or not. Dave, thank you so much for doing the subtitles! English is not my first language and I even hate sweets (I love savory stuff) but Ann has such a magnetic and interesting personality that I watched almost every single video, I love the effort you put into your videos and I truly appreciate you two a lot!

      Yes!! Same here!
      I love when people manually put the subtitles on their videos (although, the auto generated ones can be pretty hilarious sometimes…)
      I quickly developed the best English, with the least accent in my family, because I would watch EVERYTHING with subtitles so I could read along and hear how words were pronounced! 💖

    The camp fire bread here would be called Bannock, it's a dish from the Natives, and it can be cooked using a stove, or frying it in oil, or on the camp fire. If you are cooking it in the oven, or frying it in oil, we add a bit more water than you did, and we try not to knead it, because that makes it tough. We stir it just until everything is combined.

      Yeah it’s amazing! In my case I always use them because im spanish, so if I don’t understand what they say sometimes i just can read it and its way easier to understand everything they’re saying. Sometimes google translations don’t write down what the person is saying, so it’s fantastic that Dave writes them down. They’re both amazing

    Damper, also known as bush bread or seedcake, is a European term that refers to bread made by Australian Aboriginals for many thousands of years. Damper is made by crushing a variety of native seeds, and sometimes nuts and roots, into a dough and then baking the dough in the coals of a fire.

      I remember damper bread being mentioned when I read The Thornbirds, when they were putting out the huge fire on Drogheda.
      The ingredients Ann and Dave used for the damper are the same as a basic American (bread) biscuit recipe (not a sweet biscuit that Americans call cookies). The damper bread out of the foil looks like a giant biscuit, even when Ann broke it open. Yum! I love biscuits! And now I'm sure I love damper, too!

    • @madelinebitts2766
      @madelinebitts2766 3 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      You're talking about bush bread, which is different to damper. Bush bread/seedcake was made for thousands of years by aboriginals and was often made with spinifex seeds. Damper is very specifically only referring to the type of bread made with wheat and used by stockmen because it was easy to make. As similar as they are, they aren't related, and a lot of mob would get annoyed with you if you called their seedcake, "damper".

    Silicone is heat safe up to 220 C/428 F. Wood, on the other hand, burns between 300-600 C; and charcoal can reach over 1000 degrees (hot enough to melt aluminum foil, if touched directly)!
    Also keep in mind that many silicone-type products include plastic fillers that can reduce their heat tolerance and make them less suitable for food/cooking. Make sure you use products as directed 😊

    • @DariusBaktash
      @DariusBaktash 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      A lot of folks forget this in backcountry cooking, as well as misunderstanding heat tolerance of other materials. Non-stick pans can't be used over open flame fires for the same reason, and even titanium can warp a bit over hotter fire. Aluminum can be used for wrapping, but doesn't stay structurally sound at campfire temps.
      The best materials to date are still classic stainless steel, although titanium for some applications is fine.

    When they started describing what damper is, especially when listing the ingredients, it suddenly clicked for me: "Oh, bannock!" That's what we call it in Canada, at least. It's cool how every culture seems to have some variation of campfire bread. I'd really like to try damper now, and see how it's different from the bannock I'm used to.

      Here in South Africa we have two versions of this! Theres a yeasted bread called potbrood ("pot bread") that you make in a cast iron pot on the fire (it looks a bit like a cauldron, and its called a potjie - literally "little pot"). Then theres a version you make as little breads on the grill over the fire - they're called roosterkoek, literally "grill cakes"!
