I cook black eyed peas for the New Year's meal since as far back as I can remember. Can't say it brings me good luck but the tradition is hard to stop after you've been doing it for so long. Of course you have to have Jalapeno cornbread with your peas and my cornbread is a meal in itself.
Yes that just helped me because I’m in this kitchen currently thinking how I’m about to make it thick I thought about mashing some but then I thought it wouldn’t taste right but I watch a few videos and nobody did it then I come across this video and bam she did it I happy now THANK YOU
Those lovely beans look so soft and hearty! They must go so well with the cornbread 🥰 At our house, we always eat this noodle soup called soba 😊. Can't believe we're nearing the end of this year already! Thank you for making it better for me with your wonderful words and cooking videos 💕💖
You are so welcome 🤗. Thank you for being here also. For loving and supporting what I do. I always look forward to your lovely comments 🥰. I've never heard of soba noodle soup before. I am going to look it up. ❤
Grandma taught us to just wash the peas and cook it for 20 minutes in enough water to cover with no spices or salt or anything at all except for water. And it cooks perfectly. Then you start your recipe using cooked peas. 👌🏻 I make this dish .. wash abd soak rice for 40 minutes, mix the cooked peas with rice together in a pot of salted water, add turmeric for appetizing color and cook until aldente then sieve (I usually keep the rice water in the freezer for other recipes). Boil a couple of eggs and shell them. Sauté onions with butter or olive oil until nicely golden, add the rice/peas over it and place the eggs on top either whole or sliced, I like them quarters, gather some rice around them to infuse them and drizzle about a quarter cup of rice water over the mixture in the pot and cover to continue cooking for 20 minutes on lowest flame you got. Once done, turn off heat, carefully fluff with a fork to release excess trapped steam and cover for 10 minutes before serving alongside a refreshing deli yoghurt mix or Greek Tzatziki. 🤗 Enjoy.
This is my favorite beans other from pinto an kidney beans,an yes I make a batch of black eye peas rice an beans every New Year for good luck the coming year!!
Eating them at New Years was never a tradition when I was growing up nor at my house. I don't believe in luck nor superstitious. Black eyed peas are good to eat any time of year though. My sister in law would like this recipe since she is Vegan. I will send it to her.
Me neither Debbie, I don't believe in luck or superstitious things. I know a lot of people do though. I love them and like you I make Black eyed peas any time I want.
Watery is fine so you can taste the ingredients!! I love this recipe because it’s healthy without all the high blood pressure/ diabetes to worry about 😂 yes smashing them a little bit more would have taken the water. But I also add bay leaves, red flake pepper to give it a little spice 😅
You are so welcome. Thank you, too 🤗. I think I smashed the peas out of habit. It's just something we always do with our red kidney beans when we cook them, so I did the same with the peas. Rainy days are the best ❤️
Enjoyed and learned from your video, you did a great job, very appealing but touching the food so much is not something I do and I really promote not touching as much as possible or wearing gloves for hygiene. Otherwise, great video.
For a lucky and prosperous year ahead, make this simple Black-Eyed Peas recipe a New Year's tradition.

I think that's so nice that you still keep up the tradition 🤗
This looks like the recipe for ME! thanks..... I like the mashing some of the peas idea to thicken and bring out more flavor. THANKS.
My pleasure 😊

Aallimorewilliams5358 How do you do it?
Did you soak the blackeyedpeas overnight?
No, I didn't.
A lovely view from your window on a rainy day. Are you somewhere in the USA?
I love my view. I am in Texas.

My pleasure ❤️
I cook mine with smoked turkey wings
Yum 😋
Shouldn't soak for at least 6 hours? I allow mine to soak overnight.
I have an electric stove what do I put it on 5 or 6
Put it on 5.
@@CookingwithShirani Thank you so much because the black eye peas came out so good
You are very welcome. So happy to hear that 😊
The black-eyed peas I have are fresh picked. They're not dehydrated. How do I cook them, vegan style?
I've never cooked fresh peas before. I would cook them the same way, but just not as long.
I always make a black eye pea salad for the new year
Sounds great!
what do you call this type of recipe?
Nice simple recipe. Love it. Cool sexy nails colour 😍 as usual. Perfect way to dive into holiday season
I'm glad you like the recipe. I know you always ask for vegetarian recipes. Thanks for noticing the 💅 as usual 😊
You are Guyanese
No, I'm from Belize 😊🇧🇿
No we don't have that as a New Year's thing, we eat 12 grapes at midnight to have good luck all 12 months of the new year
Oh, I like that! I had never heard of that before.
It took it several hours to get soft 😢
It depends where you get it from. Sometimes, they soften up quicker than some.
Don't mix superstition in your recipes. It undermines your expertise.

This is at her house. Do you use gloves when you're cooking at home?
It's too watery and mushy
Thank you
