My mother raised us on black eyed peas. I love the purple hulled black eyed peas (I don't care how much they stain my hands and finger nails). This makes me want to make some black eyed pea patties. Black eyed peas are good.
Purple hull peas and black eye peas aren’t the same thing.
@@anndeecosita3586 They aren’t but are extremely close. Whenever I go to the seed store and ask for BEP, they usually give me PH’s anyway.
BEP patty? What is that? 😂
Yes
@@CodyCole80if you don't know what black eyed peas are you don't need to be on this station
I love black eyed peas. Thank you for the history lesson.
this is great! we teach black food history and we will use this in teaching!
May I have your website? I'm a coordinator for an organization that combats food insecurity.
And you can add the story of Afro-Brazilian “Acaraje”, which is made with fried mashed black eyed peas.
Amazing that finally we learned that special thang about them black eyed peas.
I practice hoodoo as pass down for my great-grandmother. Black eyed peas has always been a staple in my family. A dish called hoppin John my mom would make on a regular. But also they were believed to bring luck and prosperity and you eat them for the new year.
I’m black and my entire very large extended family is from the South. I never had Black Eye Peas until I was an adult because all of my older relatives hated them and refused to eat them. Our cousin Spicey says black eye peas make her windpipe hurt. 😂. I tried them, and it’s a no for me too. Might be genetic aversion. In my family we eat purple hull peas. Some of my relatives have/had farms and would give my grandmother entire sacks of peas. I have fond memories of many days my grandmother had me and my cousins shelling peas, shucking corn and so on. ❤.
You serious about not knowing about black eyed plastic until you were older? And family from the south?
PROBABLY DIDN’T COOKED THEM RIGHT. THEY SRE NOT BAD. I COME FROM A BUNCH OF CHEFS ALL ABSOLUTELY AMAZING COOKS HAD THERE ON RESTAURANTS. I USED TO EAT THEM AS A KID. BUT, I DON’T EAT BEANS OR PEAS ANYMORE. BECAUSE, I CAN’T DIGEST IT. ALSO, JUST BECAUSE, YOU FROM THE SOUTH DOESN’T MEAN YOU CAN COOK🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
I have some in the slow cooker right now! Okra and fried chicken with some corn on the cob and homemade buttermilk cornbread.
Thanks for the culinary Black History!
Happy Juneteenth!
Omg I want some smh sound delicious ❤
THAT'S THE WAY TO GO SIS. ❤OUR BLACK EYE PEA'S. ❤
Thank you for the history of Black Eyed Peas. One of my favorite subjects is history. I truly enjoy your channel. Like #30
Very informative thanks One Mic History
Awesome 👏🏾. This is where “Acaraje” in Brazil comes from. When you said “Akara” this made me think of this.
I love their creaminess! As a Puerto Rican from NYC (Nuyorican)....I grew up eating mostly red kidney, black or white beans. A few years ago I was introduced to a West African dish called "Red Red" whuch uses BEP....it's delicious! And now I make it myself with "Fu Fu" (mashed cassava or 'yuca')...it's sooooo gooooood!!!!
There is nothing like Black Eyed Peas with Hot Water Corn Bread. Our ancestors were so smart, and they made sure to save some of their traditions without the slave owner knowing. Thank you for the video 🤎🤎🤎🤎👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Thank you for the black history lesson!💯👍🏾
I wouldn't eat them out any other beans growing up because my mom used to over cook them until they were like batter almost. Then one day at a function a lady made 5 bean soup with beef and served it over rice. I was sold instantly. I make my beans with smoked turkey and lots of onion and garlic. House be smelling so damn good! Now I want to try the black eye peas with sugar and whatever, the way they make it in Africa.
No sugar,though
@@daxterclark5092In my family, we add one tablespoon of sugar. It's pretty good.
I eat them because I like them with Al dente okra.
Legendary video One Mic History and Thank you and Keep it up please 🏆🐐🎯🙏❤️
It's quite simple: they taste good, especially when sugared right and with stewed tomatoes and corn bread. Enough said.
And a little dab of chow chow on top.
Sugared? 🤔🤨😂🙅🏽♀️
@@CodyCole80yeah it's a no for me with sugar
@@ricolaw1033 😂 Right! Who sugars BEPs?
No to sugared black eyed peas!! I like them plain or with garlic
My late mother cooked the best black eye peas.. With the ham hock and seasonings she added was so good. With a big piece of cornbread on the side. The you for sharing the history of black eye peas.
Thank you for this video. I grew up eating black eyed peas, and this gave me even more appreciation for this resilient legume.
Headed out to pick up a couple packages of cowpeas and mixed beans. I will kepp you guys updated. (Born i Charleston, SC and we survived off peas, beans, greens, cabbage, okra, pig feet, pig tail, pig ears, shark steak, flounder, crabs, and sWimp. Hee hee!)
Craving today 😋 I have purple 💜 hull peas and cream peas growing. But today my soul want black eyed peas 🤤
Idk what purple hull peas are.
@@lkvthompson they're field peas like black eyed peas, but have a purple 💜 shell and their eyes are a purplish pink color when you shell them. Cream peas are also field peas and slimmer than black eyed peas but have a tan eye. Very common in East Texas
Done made me hungry. Another great video, Thank you !!
😃 I have some (actually purple hull) growing in my garden as you speak. BEP’s are one of the best things to grow in the summer because they are able to withstand droughts. They are also nourishing, tasty, and fulfilling!!! 🤤👍🏾😋
I live and born in America I’m not African American I never thought of myself as two continents I am melanated and live it I I’m part of the chosen
I prepared a pot full last night and ate most of it with a well-cooked porterhouse steak. Afterwards I had to stagger to the bed and "zonked out". 😴
I love!!!!! a pot ❤❤❤❤❤ black eyed peas with cornbread. YUM!!!!!
Interesting stuff
I love black eyed pea 🫛 ❤
I used to help my dad with the garden. I was the one who did all the planting, because he did all the plowing. I know everything about peas. I used to pick 3 rows until the bushes were cleaned. We purple hud, black eyes, and Dixie Lee Crowder.
I love black-eyed peas. I can eat them for breakfast lunch and dinner. My relatives were raised in the south. My mother aunt and grandmother told us. Black-eyed peas were good for you. Plus it cleans you out.
I’m eating right now in a cook up rice Guyana 🇬🇾
Thank you so much
Great video! Doesn't change the fact I don't care for black eyed peas.
Love 'em...had some last week end with steak...Yumm❤😂😅
I grew up eating BLACK EYE PEAS, my parents grew up in FLORIDA. Never knew the story, she would make potato salad black eye peas collard greens and fried chicken every NEW Year's Day. So thank you for education us about black eye peas.
I like them, but I love and prefer purple hulls and cream zipper peas. I just planted purple hulls in my garden last week.
I heard during slavery , black eye peas was fed to slaves in troughs like pigs …… not sure if this was true ? However black eye peas taste really good if cooked well
I grew up eating black eyed peas my grandmother would steal them with tomatoes garlic bacon onions sometimes she would put okra I never was a fan of Black eyed peas my family still cook them for New Year's I'll cook them because I like to do tradition that my family raise me on but what I'll do is I'll buy a what's can of Black eyed peas because it's just me but if my mom wants some then I buy the Frozen bag and cook them up real good for my mom and she loves them what's cornbread but when I do buy them in a can add by Gloria's black eyed peas in the can is there a season and they are good only around holidays only around New Year's
Well done informative video. I was aware of the link with Sherman's rampage through the south. However learned more about the roots of one of my favorite meals. Dixie General Store Heflin Alabama
Not a fan of black eyed peas but learning their history makes we want to try them again.
Not only nutritious, Black-eyed peas are delicious. I've eaten them all my life and so have my family, whose forebearers moved North from Georgia and North Carolina. Thanks so much for the history lesson... It is so appreciated! ❤
We love them because they taste GOOD😂
My black eyed peas be slappin!!
My mom people was from Georgetown SC and her beliefs for New Year was collard greens brought dollar bills and Black eye peas brought coins.
I'm not black and I love Black eyed peas.😊
They are for everyone lol
This is a ridiculous comment. And you haven't put in much thought before posting it. You don't have to be Black to like a certain food that's mostly prepared by Black people. It's according to one's preference of taste, not race.
Black Eyed Peas originated in the Americas like 90% of all the foods on the planet. Get the book, "Civilization and the Ancient Egyptians," by Katanga Bongo.
Every new years they want black eyed peas.....
Here's a little tast of home💜👑💜
My high ass thought he meant the music group 😂😂😂
😂🤦🏽♀️🤷🏽♀️
Lmao
Hilarious 😂
I never wondered and never had them but the food on the thumbnail looks delicious.
I love Akara or Black Eyed Peas Fritters‼️😍
My Mom and Dad were from the South. I love all Southern Soul food accept, black eyed peas. They were a staple in my house growing up. Hated them then, hate them now🤷🏾
I loved me some peas not because of superstitious reasons though..i love for them..
I'm white and I love black eyed peas. The only pea I like better are purple hull peas
"Mama, this boy said: Black-eyed peas and cornbread make you have a h-a- a-a-a-rd head." This reminded me of the song a kindergarten classmate taught us. 😄
Never had it before I had red pea and pigeon pea, and Lima beans ..all, but not black eyed peas
I love black eyed peas over rice. I wish I had a soul food spot near me. The closest one was 40 mins away, but the pandemic killed it and I think the owner got really sick.
Grew up eating them and
continue to eat them once a year. Should eat more than on New Year Day
I’m black and I have never eaten black eyed peas in my entire life.
Same here
Thanks!
I’m Black, 70 years of age and never loved black eyed peas. I just started eating this pea once a year, five year’s ago.
I literally just watched Houdini. Fuck we're being watched too... !!!!
I needed to here this, because I thought it was one of my aunts made up traditions lol
Love? We love a lot of things, but the title seems off. 😊
Just discover your history channel. Chinese poor folks cook a stew with black eyed peas and pork tails.
Noi wonder they don't talk about Sherman. He was clearly sent to do a job. Never underestimate who Heaven will place at the Head of The Beat Down Committee. Cause them folks never saw this coming from one that look like them.
I used to tell my mom that the eyes were looking at me
*I DO NOT* 🙊
YES, YES, YES"!!!❤ OH BOY"! GIVE ME MY " BLACK EYE PEA'S. LOVE MY BLACK EYE PEA'S. MY GRANDMA COOKED DEM BLACK EYES PEA'S ALLLLL THE TIME. BLACK EYE PEA'S, RICE, FRIED CHICKEN, BAKED SWEET POTATO AND MUST HAVE GOOD OLD CORN BREAD BAKED IN THE OVEN OR COOKED ON TOP OF THE STOVE IN A CAST IRON PAN. " YIPPEE, YIPPEE, " GIVE ME DEM GOOD OLD BLACK EYE PEA'S"!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤ " HOPPIN JOHN'S"! ❤❤❤❤❤
I use to smashed these with cornbread
They taste best with just a little salt! New year day for the descendants of slavery here in America and the 4 corners of the earth is the beginning of spring! How can a new year start in the middle of winter when the ground is frozen and there’s nothing blooming outside?
Black eyed peas tastes always good cooked with sugar , cornmeal and coconut milk.
No sugar
HAVE TO KNOW HOW TO COOK 🤷🏽♀️ EVERYBODY FROM THE SOUTH DON’T KNOW HOW TO COOK🤷🏽♀️ THIS LIKE EVERYONE FROM UP NORTH DOESN’T KNOW HOW TO COOK👌🏾 I DON’T EAT IN THE STREETS. I ABSOLUTELY DON’T EAT FROM OTHER FOLKS. I EAT FROM CERTAIN FAMILY MEMBERS. NOT BECAUSE, THEY CAN’T COOK. BUT, BECAUSE, THEY ARE NOT CLEAN ENOUGH 🤷🏽♀️🤦🏾♀️ THANK GOD FOR MY PEOPLE WHO PASSED THE TORCH
THEY ARE GOOD FOR OUR BLOOD TYPE!
My mother must be African American.
Pea se
I NEVER LIKED BLACK EYE PEAS, I EAT MOST BEANS.
This historic history I don’t care about
I’m black. Never had any black eyed peas. 68 years old
Try again I think you would like them.
😢
@@AbeJacoby😂
Wow
Hate them soooooo bad
Delicious😋
I appreciate the history but, from what I've tasted, black-eyed peas taste like dirt lol
Somebody doesn't know how to cook.
Baby someone stole your flavor as a child or adulthood. Black eyed peas with fried smoked sausage are so fie.🔥😋 And don't add some rice and peppers, baby with fried chicken. Matter of fact I am going to the grocery store and start my dinner for tomorrow. Thanks for commenting your dislike to inspire my family's dinner around the table tomorrow; ❤❤
@@quasimoto491 🤣 ain’t touching it 🤣
@@sheria8189 you’re welcome ☺️
You obviously didn’t have some that were seasoned probably. You have to add seasoned meat (beef sausage or beef bacon) to give them flavor.
My mother used to make this for New years. Never liked those peas to be honest.
Actually, I hate black eyed peas. Can’t stand them.
Sorry I hate black eyed peas
You put it off wrong because the real history of Black Eyed Peas are from the United States not Africa!
While the black-eyed pea is deeply ingrained in cultures of the US South, the crop is not native to the Americas
No I’m from Guyana and what he just described is a must have in Guyana on New Year’s Eve old African customs so it could not have come from the US the common connection is African
Sorry Ma’am. BEPs originated from Africa.
