I only started going to LANs in 2012, before that i would just play games online with mates.
There was massive event that would run every few months in a Univertity basketball indoor statum with over 600 players.
So we started going to these events. You would go as a team, and compete with other teams in games like CSGO and COD4 in tournaments.
There were also arcade games, console games and table top games too, but it was mainly a PC event. (Back then we were all about the PC master race haha)
There was a stage, prises were handed out sponsored by local computer shops who would have a pop up stand at these events too.
These events were alcahol free, so after a while between me and a mate we would host smaller LANs for about 10-20 people that we all have drink at.
We dont have these events much any more and these days when we do, its just a piss up with a few rounds of a game between and down to less than 10 people.

yeah I guess I make it seem like they don't happen at all anymore. I guess In my personal experience it went from almost a necessity in the multiplayer gaming space to being optional. And some people, having the option, didn't have the enthusiasm anymore because they could just stay home and game.
but damn dude 600 people!?!?!? that's insane but sounds so damn fun.
The smaller lan you mention is something I wish I could do more regularly for sure.
