PS2 emulation has improved an unbelievable amount over just the last few years. Games that used to have visual glitches and unplayable amounts of slowdown run perfectly today. For many of us buying a PS2 along with the games isn't an option but emulation is a damn near perfect alternative, it's gotten as close to the real deal as 5th gen emulation.

I’m glad you guys covered multiple options for PS2. I would have added the 8bitdo bluetooth adapter for modern controllers and the GBS-C for a budget option for upscaling. I think covering emulation and soft modding as an option was amazing. PS2 is a great system to collect for but some of the best games are unattainable for the average person. Sidenote: if you soft mod the console you can also use a software upscaler called GSM if you use a component cable. It’s not perfect and doesn’t work on every game but, when it does it looks great.
Hands down the best console ever, bought one again recently and already have 300+ games loaded on the hard drive, playing so many amazing games that i never knew existed back in the day, i dont think the world will ever see another gaming era as good as the ps2, the creativity is un matched
Logitech made a wireless PS2 controller that is still to this day the absolute BEST controller for the system that I've ever used. Still using the same one I had back when the system came out.
I really enjoyed you two's video here about the PS2 and some of the additions, but the games were really enjoyable to learn about. I love learning about the classic games I had no idea about and what's funny is a game like Rogue Galaxy I have had in my physical collection and haven't played it. I'm glad that you highlighted that game that makes me glad that I have it in my PS2 collection.
The Ps2 is my childhood! I remember playing games like Sly cooper 1, War of the Monsters, Ty the Tasmanian Tiger 2, Star Wars Battlefront 2, and all my Ps1 Spyro and Crash Bandicoot games.
CONTROVERSIAL: due to the tendency of PS2 DVD drives to be somewhat fragile and temperamental I have to advocate using Open PS2 Loader through an HDD/network share as opposed to discs, which does make the need to buy games somewhat superfluous. This is especially true if you're going to play on a fat PS2.
The original SSX was a system seller for me as well. The game looked so phenomenal and incredibly fun I just had to play it! And I still play it to this day! That whole series is awesome!
@MetalJesusRocks it's a major issue with the first 2 slim models, they fixed it in the third model. There's a bunch of fixes like using, tape, glue, and even 3d printed parts. But if you weren't unaware I'd suggest checking some of your discs
It's more often the plastic guide for the laser that guides it on the worm gear that wears out than the laser itself. For some reason I never see people talking about this part online, I don't think I've ever had a laser that didn't work with a new guide and at most some slight potentiometer adjustments.
I can still remember one time where the laser on my original PS2 failed, so my dad took it to a small game shop in our town. They fixed it, and only charged like ten dollars since we were so polite through my whole laser issue. Man, I miss that store, everyone was so nice, and I got a lot of good PS2 games from that little shop
First to like and comment :). I agree. The PS2 has one of the best designs and game libraries ever. For me, it solidified Sony's position in the gaming industry. Being a PC gamer back in the day, the only thing for me that the PS2 was missing was a Hard Drive. Thanks to the PS2 we have the Xbox :)
Great video boys! It's sad that my largest and simultaneously most neglected collection is the PS2. I absolutely loved this entire generation, but of the big three at the time, I feel like the ps2 aged the worst. Possibly because I used it to mostly play ps1 games, being broke as dirt there was a plethora of loose disks at my local pawn shop, but also renting dvds from blockbuster & hollywood video. Others thought it was cutting-edge, but for me it was utilitarian. I traded my dreamcast to a buddy with my entire collection for his ps2, only to keep playing ps1 games and watching dvds while I was working the night shift in the pre-wifi days. When the video rental stores and funcoland were liquidating, I went (game)crazy and loaded up several disc binders. But by this time, my downtime was limited with my job, education, and starting a family. The 360 took over whatever free time I had once it dropped & damn, Gears of War and Halo 3 were awesome late into the AM with a mic. I went back a few years afterwards and completed Black, FF12, MGS3, and GTA:VC. Great experiences. Now I need to Chisel the back-catalogue down before the hardware kicks the bucket. Thanks for the suggestions!
We tried using wireless mics, but they were having difficulty connecting. So instead I used a R0de shotgun mic with a Voice Isolation filter in Final Cut Pro. That's the best I could do unfortunately. Hopefully the info was still good 👍
@@MetalJesusRocksNot really my man. Just sounds like you had a Faulty Pair and you Just gave up. The issue isnt the reverb of the room but that you Sound to far away of the Mic.
Thanks for covering PS2 again! Like others, I'd be excited to see more updated buying guides. I agree that a lot of those games are hidden gems. But, I wish you guys would point out how frustrating the games get a few hours in. God Hand, Samurai Western, and Rogue Galaxy can be particularly frustrating, usually due to difficulty or awkward controls. That being said, these games are worth playing, but not always worth their price tags. I definitely recommend people try them first.
A video about a retro console?Metaljesus is back! I’m watching this at least 10 times to catch up on PS2 info. I love the PS2 fat with a bitfunx IDE to SATA adapter. The Gamestar adapter I had caused games to stutter. I like collecting physical games but playing backups of the games from HDD. I think it’s the best of both worlds.
I use the Bitfunx as my PS2 HDMI upscaler. I paid $30 for it. It actually makes Resident Evil 4 looks graphically comparable to the GameCube version so I’m happy with it.
Sword of the Samurai/Kengo 2 Legacy of the Blade is a real hidden gem. I got that game in the ps2 era for something like 5 euro, didn't expected much of it...but man, that is such a great game. It is so much more than just a fighting game, really cool features.
The great thing about emulation is you can even get light guns for PC now that are made to work not only with emulators like PCSX2, but also on modern displays
Thank you for mentioning emulation. I used to follow your channel heavily and I felt this slight elitism in the comments that emulation is subpar to the real thing, but seeing how expensive these old games from my childhood have gotten, emulation is now my preferred method for playing games. Maybe 5 years ago, emulation wasn't great, but now, it really is fantastic.
I can vouch for the RetroTink2X. The scaler works great! I'd recommend chaining up the output of the scaler to an HDMI switcher so you can swap between your PS2 and other consoles in your entertainment center. Component cables make all the difference.
Grande Metal Jesus locooooo.
Rogue Galaxy is one of my favorite PS2 games. No one talked about it back in the day, at least where i'm from, and i was blown away by it, it caught me off guard. Not to mention that Treasure Planet was one of my favorite animated movies even back then, and this had a similar vibe to it. I gotta replay it again at some point.
Bro got hit with a nostalgia bomb seeing this. Back when I was like 21, I would always listen to these in my headphones at work, so it was almost like a podcast for me 😂 thanks for the hours of entertainment and information MetalJesus, Reggie, and the rest of the crew 🤘🏽
Always great to see you uploading updated guides! I have a couple of stuff to add: the BlueRetro/8BitDo Wireless Adapters are great accessories too. As for the HDMI options, it's important to remember some of them may not support low resolutions and are straight out incompatible with the PS1 retrocompatibility and a lot of homebrews (as the menu of many of them is super low res). I believe most upscalers can handle this fine, but the cheap adapters such as the PS2 to HDMI meet this limitation.
Since getting emulation my PS2 's are stuck in the wardrobe. It may seem wrong, but emulation has always been the best way to play old consoles from my perspective. Especially as I only have one TV which I use as my computer monitor. Maybe if I get another larger PC monitor I will use this 24" TV for my PS 2's. Still the PS 2 games look great and I do use a PS 4 game controller on my PS 2 emulation for kind of an authentic feel. It's great to see you two back on the screens again with another buying guide. To be honest I am hoping you would do another updated Dreamcast video. I definitely prefer the Dreamcast over the PS 2 in style and controllers. The PS 2 looks like a deformed house brick. Not as bad looking as the XBOX One, but certainly worse than the Dreamcast.
something that confuses is when MJR does a video with Reggie every comment is abt how awesome Reggie is but then nobody goes over and watches his channel. Cmon people go give the man some love on his channel too
I was just playing my PlayStation 2 yesterday. I recently bought a hidden gem racing game called Shox that you might enjoy if you like rally arcade games, it’s so much fun.
This is perfect timing, i've been diving back into the ps2 era. One of the best! Guitar Hero 2 is the reason I found so much great music and decided to learn how to play guitar. Everything from the song choice, visual aesthetic, gameplay, to the hilarious band tips in the loading screen make this game special!
Hey guys just found your channel and seeing many useful things on this video alone. Saved the items you mentioned and will enhance my PS2 slim even more. Thanks guys 💪🏻😎
The problem with the new memory card is that some games cannot be transferred from one memory card to another I know I tried that. Games Like Mortal Kombat Deception, Shaolin Monks and Armageddon you would have to repast the game intro to save it
Late getting to this video (a great watch!) but I need to fully endorse the Steam Deck as an emulation device, particularly for PS2. I've finished loads of PS2 games on the system that I never even heard of (thanks to videos like these). Some features: -Upscaling to 1080p -Fully remappable controls with the ability to add gyro -Quick save/load states that take the frustration away in certain games. -The OLED model makes these games pop like never before too.
I was always a purist but since I got a new PC I can play PS2 games with a 1080p enhancement. Combined with RetroAchievements, it feels like playing a modern port of those games. It's so smooth you can see details you couldn't before, like small texts on pieces of paper lying around.
Here in the UK, I always bought the monthly Official Playstation 2 Magazines (OPS2M) along with the demos. There were 100 Official PlayStation demos released, and I currently own 81 of them. I have been searching long and hard for the remaining 19 and I can never find them anywhere. Apparently demo 100 does exist but I am still yet to even see a cover of it. The demos are cool, collectible and hardly get mentioned in the collecting world. The reason I like them is because every now and then demos produced some oretty cool stuff, like add-ons for games, and sometimes even games that never even ended up having a release in the West. Did you guys in the US have the OPSM demos and such?
I’m so glad we did this video. The PS2 is one of the great systems of all time. So many exclusives games still only on that system.

Crazy how time flies and its been almost 10 years since i found your channel lol
Metal Jesus Radical Reggie and the PlayStation 2 the never ending story
Couldn't agree more!
Missed talking about the ribbon issue with the PS2 slims scratching discs. Learned that the hard way
Never had an issue with mine, but good to know!
Yes I also had discs scratched by the ribbon. It is worth checking if the ribbon is not too curved, or if the laser is working well.
@MetalJesusRocks it's a major issue with the first 2 slim models, they fixed it in the third model. There's a bunch of fixes like using, tape, glue, and even 3d printed parts. But if you weren't unaware I'd suggest checking some of your discs
@feplays007 dude it sucks so much, I had to get 3d printed parts to fix it
It's more often the plastic guide for the laser that guides it on the worm gear that wears out than the laser itself. For some reason I never see people talking about this part online, I don't think I've ever had a laser that didn't work with a new guide and at most some slight potentiometer adjustments.
Thanks for making sure this time the PS logo was adjusted correctly 😂
You noticed. 😜
I can relate. Young, ample time, no money. *OR* Middle-age, some money, and no time.
Please Update your Mic Quality. A Channel as big as yours has no Business sounding so Crappy. No Hate but come on Jason ;)
i must agree, such a great channel but the sound is bad. straight from hell
Indeed
Three new games less - but a good mic instead! ❤️🎤
Da haste vollkommen recht!
Rogue Galaxy was also one of my favorite games on the PS2. Spartan: Total Warrior is also a great game if you haven't played it yet.
You 2 are amazing the knowledge you guys have in the gaming community your both like gaming college professors
Love that you keep doing these every now and then, found them way back and you guys still come up with games I've never heard of
Big time exclusive sleeper for the PS2: Contra Shattered Soldier. It’s so good and was overlooked because the PS1 Contra games were trash.
Greetings from greece Jason. You and Reggie remind me of Barcelona greater duo Xavi and Iniesta 😊😊😊😊
Samurai Western is one of the most fun games I've ever played on the PS2, that hidden gem is amazing. Great video guys!
It really is!
I
I can vouch for the RetroTink2X. The scaler works great! I'd recommend chaining up the output of the scaler to an HDMI switcher so you can swap between your PS2 and other consoles in your entertainment center. Component cables make all the difference.
The original ps2 buying guide you did is what got me started in collecting video games, and since then I’ve been subscribed
Great video. Thank you for mentioning emulation! PCSX2 is a fantastic program.
I recently bought a backwards compátible ps3 and I got to playing ps2 again. There´s a huge library. The timing of this video is awesome.
Man, I used to love these old buying guides, Helped me build my collection ages ago. Glad to see you and reggie doing one again!
Glad you like them!
Please do an updated video for the OG Xbox as well!
Love this series MJR!
Your buying guides with Reggie are always my favorite!
Mine too!
something that confuses is when MJR does a video with Reggie every comment is abt how awesome Reggie is but then nobody goes over and watches his channel. Cmon people go give the man some love on his channel too
What’s funny is you could pretty easily get an actual CRT for way less than those cables. Get a 13’ and it doesn’t take up room.
I was just playing my PlayStation 2 yesterday. I recently bought a hidden gem racing game called Shox that you might enjoy if you like rally arcade games, it’s so much fun.
I loved the Ace combat games on this console. I can't wait for Ace Combat 8.
XG3: Extreme G racing was one of the first racing games i played in ps2, true classic
Some features:
-Upscaling to 1080p
-Fully remappable controls with the ability to add gyro
-Quick save/load states that take the frustration away in certain games.
-The OLED model makes these games pop like never before too.
Mannnnnn I missed these buying guide videos! PS2 is such an amazing console to play and collect for!
Please do an updated OG Xbox buying guide also!
My #1 allaround gaming channel!! U need to hit that 1 mil.!!! Keep it up mjr AND Radical Reggie!!" ❤
I agree with there is a lack of variety on new systems . Bring back shooters like time crisis etc .
