I dunno if you are still answering questions here, but I'm looking at a cheapo S70 with all forward gears and no reverse. I see in the comments below you asked another viewer if it moves forward in reverse. If it does, would that be a PNP sensor? I found an article from ATRA (technical bulletin 1118) saying to disconnect the solenoid wiring to see if it fixes the reverse. Is this something that can be done on the fly while looking at a used car, or is that wiring all inside the case? Thanks. Great video btw.
@@GaryFerraro my 99 Volvo has the exact problems you described in the video. I would like to attempt a rebuild myself (not worried if I have to get a new ride) any suggestions on parts, especially if I need to replace the case? Thank you! Great video and inspiration as I tackle this challenge!

Hello Gary, My Alfa Romeo 156 has a 50-42LE I took it apart and did a overhaul. Now everything is installed and at first it wanted to go in to reverse but now it just kind of slips the reverse while driving forward works fine. Can you point me in to a direction?
Hi Gary, My Volvo C70 T5 1999 with only 72200km suddenly the automatic gearbox 50-42LE does not go beyond 3000-3500rpm and I don't know what is happening. I add information: -Shifts well without strong pulls and very smooth. -DOES NOT respond to demand if you step fast-the accelerator. Non-existent kick-down It accelerates normally but when it reaches over 3000-3500rpm it stays there. -There are NO noises or strange jerks when switching with the selector between gears. - NO Fault Light (Arrow) Plugged In -It has only made a dry noise (clak) on one occasion when I started to see that it did not go above 3500rpm and I stepped on it to see what it did and try to "unblock" something. It's the feeling I have like something plugged, but obviously in the box, it's not from an engine. -Fluid level checked just the day before. Correct in both quantity and color. -A priori I rule out an electrical problem because the car does not indicate a fault anywhere, no light on. I don't put the scanner but no lights appearing, the scanner will tell me. Any ideas? Ty Gary.
What difference is there between the aw55 42 ls and the 50 42 le? I have a c70 with 5042le change and I can't find a gearbox and I have located a 55 42ls. Would it be worth it?
Hello! I am interested in your video on the Volvo 50-42LE automatic gearbox because I have the same one on a 99 SAAB 9-5 Aero. I would like to know what brands of rebuild kit you use because it is very easy to get lost among all the references from different suppliers. I would like to find a complete rebuild kit because all the metal pressure plates and friction plates need to be changed. I would like to find more resistant material than the original but I do not know if it exists. Can you help me?
Thanks for the amazing video! I have a Volvo 850 that uses the same gearbox. Last month I felt the reverse going loose. I feel the reverse engaging but that has no power to move the car. I tried to disconnect the electric cables, but the problem remains the same. Can you help me with the possible cause of this issue?
got a question. Do you rebuild a customers trans mostly or do you have already rebuilt trans stocked? great vid as usual. figuring where all the parts go would drive me nuts .
Thank you for another detailed video. Experience is worth its weight in gold, but how in the world do you keep up with all the variations in various ATs? Amazing.
Great question holybritches! Gary Ferraro Do you attend seminars, or local training events? Or just research as they come in (which I more commonly do)?
Great video. Please advice. My back cover middle teflon seal groove is bad and cannot take the teflon seal. Can it work with the two remaining outer seals?
I own a Volvo 850R that has been highly modified. The first thing most people do to these cars is do 3x drain and fills on the transmission and then install a stand alone transmission cooler. These cars have issues where the radiator likes to burst sending coolant into the transmission destroying it. I know 4 people in the volvo forums that have had this happen. Also its a good idea to install a inline filter on these transmissions since they have no removable filter on them. I recommend getting any parts you need for Volvos or BMW's from FCPeuro. FCPeuro has the best warrenty ive ever seen they cover a part for life they even cover oil transmission fluid brake pads etc for life! You just order a new set of the item and then send the old one back and they refund the amount on your credit card!

Hey. Any idea on what might've happened on my parents volvo, it completely lost its reverse in 2015 and went to forward limp mode. My dad said he heard/felt a loud bang when shifting into reverse then we swapped in a working gearbox from another 850 t5. Now its been 5 years and the swapped box suddenly lost all power ( on the freeway on casual low throttle acceleration at around 50mph). My dad said the engine just revved up and nothing happened. The car doesnt go into any gear and it flashed the up arrow upon startup. When I tested the transmission codes on the diagnostic port it gives code 322 for "incorrect gear ratio" "manufacturer recommends replacing transaxle". Its literally the same if you pushed the clutch in on a manual trans, no drive at all. I also ran the test with the diagnostic button that goes through all the solenoids while engine is idling and it seems to work but it doesnt give me more DTC's than the 322 stored already. Now were having the option of overhauling the old trans that worked until its reverse died, or finding yet another working used trans. I have took it apart almost fully (old reverse banger trans) and found no metal shavings other than black friction material gunk on the bottom of case and pump housing/plates area. The trans had a rough reverse activation for a few years and it would "bang" into reverse most of the time when hot.
Thank you for another excellent video.
