I remember hearing of Sammy's passsing while in my Connecticut office. I just sat there and tears rushed down my face. More class in his little finger than all the celebrities of today combined. RIP Sammy.
How does some one not cry for this great soul of a man and entertainer. He went through so much hell in life but yet gave so much more love and encouragement to so many.
Sammy's putting his heart and soul into this performance, as he always did. He left it all on the stage. This show was for starving children in developing countries. What a soul.
when I watch Sam doing this number, I am awed by his ability to really "tell the story." He brings us all into his world. Problem is, when i watch a number like this masterpiece, my vision gets blurry every time. EVERY time!
You are not alone. I'm a 62 year old macho shit-head and I cry too. Takes me back to when I had my whole family and times were so much easier and better. I was in 6th grade in '72 and things were about to get "different". This just takes me back before things got a little harder. Watching old performances from the 60s and 70s make me well up every time. Try listening to Carol Burnett's end show song, "I'm So Glad We Had This Time Together", That'll take ya back! Peace.
@@Bakaat777 As she tugged her ear every show after that song which was saying hello to her grandmother. Hilarious show and sentimental memory. Honestly I became choked up hearing the Danny Thomas show closing theme. Like you stated… We had no idea how much life would change☮
the talent this man had, I never liked this stuff when I was younger, I considered it old fashion to me,(my dads generation) it's only when I got a bit older that I realised what a brilliant performer this man was, (also dean and frank too) they were of a golden age where singers could actually sing, sometimes you don't appreciate someone until they have gone, "Sammy come back and dance".
MrTibbs you said it right, that is exactly how i am feeling, i was old enough to know who he was, but i wasn't interested in him when i was younger, but now with you tube i am rediscovering the Super Talented Sammy Davis Jr. Wow, what a talent he was, i wish that i was in the front row of any one of his shows, he's gone but not forgotten.
Watching almost 52 years later with a tear in my eyes. Such a talent. A Truly a great talent. Love You Sammy. Mr Bojangles come back and dance please come back and dance for us. Mr Bojangles... dance... Why can't You come back and dance?
Sammy is great on record but you only really appreciate him when you can see the performance. He owned the stage when he was on it and could captivate an audience like no one else. That's why he was considered by many to be the greatest entertainer of his time. He doesn't just sing the song, he performs it, becomes it.
I so agree! I saw Sammy Davis Jr sing this song in Lake Tahoe Nevada as a littler girl and fell in love at the age of seven! He puts his heart and soul out in every song and performance with his tremendous voice. What an amazing entertainer and with such style too!!
Grew up listening to this man in the 70s & 80s . Must be one hell of a band in the Heavens . No doubt he left a positive mark on earth while he was here . RIP Sammy . 2022
There's a huge difference between a Performer and an ENTERTAINER!!! Sammy was the quintessential Enterainer .... like no other or EVER will be again ..... ❤
One of the best male performers of the 20th Century. Sammy Davis Jr knew how to deliver a song like no one could. If this song doesn't move you, nothing well! Incredible......
What a total talent Sammy was. This is such a beautiful interpretation. To me this song has an Americana-Steven Foster-Mark-Twain-Riverboat-era quality about it.
That’s true I know it I met him at 14 he let me try on his rings I have those pictures than I saw his show I was mesmerized I love you Sammy Davis jr 2021
Sammy Davis Jr was so talented it was amazing. He always gave every performance that he did 110 percent! For his slightly smaller stature he had the voice of a giant that was so powerful it was frightening. RIP Sammy, you will never ever be forgotten. ♥️♥️👍🙄🎼✌🎶✌🇨🇦♥️♥️
I remember the song for many many many years ago to this day it makes me smile and brings a smile and tears into my eyes great performance from a great man
He was always with me in my youth through my parents records. Man do I miss him!!! Samy, I hope you're having a swell time in heaven, giving laughter and great music to the angels!
For the traits of compassion and integrity for a performer, he stands alone. For the trifecta of singing, physical performing and just plain coolness? He stands equally alone. A special human being, loved by many who never spoke with him-that says volumes of the person. RIP Sam
This is VERY rare. This is the year the song came out. This performance and the Flip Wilson episode from the same year are the only performances using the original arrangement as the single.
This is my favorite version of this song. I keep watching this same video, over and over and over. Thank you, Sammy! Ironically, he once said in an interview that his greatest fear was ending up just like Bill "Bojangles" Robinson who died in poverty. Ed Sullivan paid for Bill Robinson's funeral and hundreds of thousands of people came to it. "Mr Bojangles" may have died in poverty, but he was rich in all the love directed towards him. I love his movies.
Just Heard this for the 100th time but the first time. Something to do with whisky... well SDJr is a f'ing genius for this. It's a fantastic performance, the studio version is as good.
What incredible quality. Once he produced the hat the crowd would go nuts. &/for good reason , I think he was singing about himself in a way, the song got to him. Sometimes he was clearly in tears, he was in Melbourne. A unique & incredible entertainer. Sublime that is the best.
I believe he could have been. I heard him tell a story of when he was in the service in WWII. He was in the Navy and some other servicemen dumped him upside down in a barrel of something. I forget the substance but itI was demeaning. So in Mr Bojangles, I think he was feeling the loneliness of someone living the life of a transient performer.
@@lar7905 I just read your post about “ Sammy Davis Jnr” . If he was in the Navy during the war there is probably little doubt he was treated badly, I agree with you.
J'aime sa voix son phrasé , le rythme de paroles , super interprétation , plus je prends de l'âge et plus j'apprécie ❤ de nos jours nos soit disant artistes peuvent bien s'accrocher
