Why this is more brilliant that it first seems. This scene and the entire show really, reframes the cold war to a position where virtually everyone who watches it would be a 3rd party who at least have no vested interest in either side if not completely hopes they both fail. For most western and eastern powers, it's hard to frame the cold war in a way that provides a truly removed frame of reference. For us Americans, this is like standing on the outside looking in at one of the darkest times in recent history with a completely new point of view.

America also had/has loads of hidden spending anyways with arms deals to sand countries and large subsidies for military industries on top.

Currently, Japan can easily build nuclear weapons. It has the technology, materials, and funds to do so.
However, most of the Japanese people are opposed to the idea of possessing nuclear weapons. They know how disastrous nuclear weapons would be. Japan actually debated the possession of nuclear weapons in the 1960s. It was considered safe under the Constitution. But we had to give it up because we did not have a testing site at that time.

This should have been a game changer in the rest of the series. The Japanese Empire got nukes. That would level the playing field between them and the reich.
Also, this is also something I found to be stupid. In comparison between the reich and the pacific states… honestly, the Japanese handled occupation a million times better. I mean, the show just started a rebellion out of nowhere in the pacific states, but… why?
They had some basic human rights in the beginning of the show, the economy honestly was doing pretty good as shown in the show, and the Japanese government was actually reaching out to the native population for support. Technically, they were doing everything right as far as occupations go.
(Just for reference, I’m not a weeb, if the empire ever did get this far, it would be an absolute horror show that would make the Nazis look like hippies, but I’m just working within the context of this world).
In contrast, the reich was literally trying to wipe American culture from existence. Like, keep in mind, this is in what, 1960 something? WWII only ended fucking 15 years before this!
Yeah, you can occupy a country for that long, but you wouldn’t be able to fucking melt the liberty bell and not cause a massive insurrection.
I mean, in this weird weird version of the Japanese Empire, they were literally trying to preserve American culture. As antiquities and nick-knacks, but preservation nonetheless.
Also, why tf would the Japanese Empire oppress black people? If anything they’d be reaching out to black Americans to gain allies against the Germans. Hell, they literally did exactly that in our world, trying to get black Americans to rise up against the US government.
Like, I don’t understand, if the Japanese Empire was meant to be portrayed as the lesser of two evils, why did they suddenly go all-out Nazi?
Like, they even had the Yakuza operating in the fucking demilitarized zone. Why wouldn’t they be using that to arm insurrectionists in the American Reich?
Like, one thing that seriously bothered me in this series was just the fact that the Nazis kept overpowering the Japanese by right of “Nazis have dieselpunk technology” or some shit.

    • @jamescollins9569
      @jamescollins9569 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

You bring up a lot of interesting points but I don't think you fully grasp the technology gap that was present even before this time period. During the second world war in our world the japanse were always short on resources and knowhow.
Them gaining the ability to make nukes at this point wasn't a game changer, because they didn't have a fully stocked arsenal as where the Nazis did. It would take years for them to build up a stockpile even close to the Nazis and do you think the Nazis would stand idly by waiting ? no they'd further build their stockpile.
That and the likely hood that since they only had maybe a handful of functioning nuclear weapons the Nazis at this point in time were still very likely to win given the minimal damage they'd directly take. The only targets directly available for japan to nuke would of been the united states, which wouldn't really affect the European arm at all. The Furher would still be alive and the decision makers would also.
Germans occupation of the US wasn't erasure there was still a lot of American culture intertwined into their schools and homes. The way the portrayed the Japanse given direct examples from the war was lenient at best. When it came to war crimes and crimes against humanity Japan was in some ways very similar to the Nazis in some cases worse.
The only reason they ever helped African American people in the states or went to them to ask for them to cause disruption was because they knew of the racial tensions. They'd fully exploit them once they'd taken the states just as Europeans had done prior. Not to mention African American's weren't fools they would know they're being played, its happened to them too many times before. I doubt they'd want to side with them and if they did it would be out of desperation.
Again I think the Japanse empire in the show is weirdly white washed in the sense their brutality is severely understated given historical contexts.
The Yakuza would of had trouble given the fact that they're japanse so them being in the zone was already suspicious enough. Both operated in the zone unofficially.
But in real life and in the series it does make sense that the Nazis would keep over powering the Japanse if they had the resources. Both sides were more or less pretty bad with resource management but with the Nazis in control of large swaths of territory they'd have much less trouble. Given the japanse weren't even running any jet planes we saw in the show they were very far behind when it came to tech. Japan always had a litany of issues when it came to biting off more than they could chew. Hence why they decided to abandon the states it just became to costly to hold it which is truthfully something that could've happened. Their real life brutal suppression of people caused a lot of unrest.
The japanse military doctrine was very outdated and needed some serious change in order to go toe to toe with the Nazis. Their honour centric mentality would cost them dearly in a war with people that saw honour as more or less overrated.
      But thats just my opinion.

@@jamescollins9569 I agree with a lot of what you said, but still, they could have done a lot more in showing reasons why the Japanese were able to even maintain their empire.
Like, another thing I noticed. Why is it that Japanese military technology just… didn’t progress? Like, at all? They had access to all of the natural resources of China, India, and even Australia.
Like I’m sorry, but in this world they should have been wanting for nothing in terms of resources.
Also, even in our real world Japanese technology really was pretty advanced. They were pioneering in biological warfare, and were even perusing technology that could have lead to a nuclear weapon (this is a fact that’s weirdly overlooked by historians, but it’s actually true).
Like, if Japan achieved its military goals in WWII, it would have been an incredibly powerful superpower.
This is also why they failed so hard, because their aspirations were just too ridiculously high and unachievable, but this is a world in which somehow they actually achieved those goals.
All of the coal and oil from Australia, all of the rare earth metals from China, all of the rubber from the indies. Are you seriously going to tell me the Japanese Empire would be lacking in resources?
I’m sorry, but the more I think about this it makes less and less sense.
It’s like this worlds Japanese Empire didn’t even bother to exploit anything it actually conquered. I mean they even got fucking Alaska. ALASKA. How is the reich able to make them struggle for oil?
Like I keep going back to this and it just seems dumber and dumber.
I agree that Japanese war crimes were white washed in the show, but that’s yet another reason why the Japanese probably should have stood a better chance.
For all intensive purposes (within this insanely dumb world) the Japanese were actually the better alternative to the Nazis. Easily. They actually treated people as well as a world conquering empire could do, and allowed them very basic freedoms. The American people were even allowed to hold fucking protests in the show. In the reich they would have been slaughtered without a second thought.
Also once again, this is merely 20 years after WWII. 20 FUCKING YEARS. You can’t tell me that everybody within the American reich were completely brainwashed in just 20 years. Especially in places like Appalachia and New England, places infamous for crime, conspiracies, and gangs (particularly in the 1950’s and 60’s).
I’m sorry, but if I keep going I’m going to start ranting about how the Nazis are portrayed in the show. It’s like they are on easy mode or something, I can’t fucking explain it. It’s behind dumb.

@@jamescollins9569 fuck it I’m doing it anyways. Wtf is going on with the Nazis?!
First of all, it’s like they experience zero resistance anywhere. While the Japanese are still fighting in China (and presumably other parts of the world) the Germans are just… winning in France and Russia? Like, no resistance, they just control everything?
I mean fuck, they somehow got ALL OF AFRICA. HOW?!?!?!?!?!?
The whole fucking shebang! They seemingly aren’t fucking facing any resistance in Africa as they enslave the entire goddamn continent!
Even during the days of the British and French conquering Africa, they faced Damn near yearly uprisings, some of which even succeeded in pushing them back or draining their resources.
Yet somehow now, in an age of submachine guns, IFV’s, and AK-47’s (we see them in the show), there are no successful African rebellions. Or rebellions anywhere in the reich! Like, we see some very rudimentary resistance in America, but it’s barely noticeable. As if they barely exist at all.
The entire reich should have been a constant war zone. Which would have been completely in character for the Nazis, since that’s exactly the kind of culture they wanted to cultivate.

All the people who cite the Germans wonder weapons and their supposed superiority have less grasp on the practicalities of war than the Germans did..Take the V2 for instance...For all its advanced design it could only deliver something like 2000lb warhead...Very destructive, but consider the deHavilland Mosquito carried twice that with a range in excess of 1000 miles. The money and resource the Nazi's pumped into the development of V1 and V2 would have been better spent on their U-boats. In another example, the spent huge amounts developing the Mouse super heavy tank which had it been produced would have been totally impractical because of its size and weight...Another example were the massive Gustav railway guns..While the smaller railway guns that used standard railways were reasonably practical the Gustav had to be transported in pieces and then have two custom railway tracks built for it to fire..It did nothing a heavy bomber could not do far easier, for less cost and in a more practical manner..Talking of heavy bombers, that's something the Germans failed to field unlike the Allies. As destructive as the German bombing of London was, it was not a patch on the Allied thousand bomber raids were..Post 1943 the Germans were losing the war, but were trying to develop too many weapon systems that just weren't practical in the short time they had left...

the research is a very tedious process, so is producing uranium-238 (I believe) as you need complex nuclear reactors and centrifiges. But research costs much much more than production as nuclear bomb is basically two pieces of plutonium in a metal shell separated by detonator. The problem is too calculate everything.

There's literally pristine water underneath Black Mesa that's not to far from there. The Japanese would be stupid to test a nuclear weapon there, and would instead, test in the open salt flats of Nevada for the same reason the US Military did: There's nothing of value out there.
Then again, the Japanese would be better informed than a crappy TV show.
