The end of this season was such a shame. A real disappointment for an otherwise very good season. It really felt rushed towards the end.
And here’s the thing... Smith was kinda the show's main character. Season 1 he was the antagonist. Season 2 and 3 he had become an antihero and by season 4 Juliana's arc had been so far relegated to the side, that Smith and Helen were constantly centre stage with the Japanese plot being the next most interesting. The show went out of its way to make clear that John was never a die-hard Nazi. Every deed and decision he’d ever made he’d done for his family. The tragedy of his character was supposed to be that he could only go upwards onto ever more shaky ground, or come crashing down with his wife and kids' fates in the balance.
To all of a sudden take a 180 with his character feels so cheap and forced to me. Why is he going full steam ahead with plans for Holocaust.3.0 when he and his family are safe? Because he “didn’t know how” to stop it? Really!? But his mate, Bill, could turn the planes around with a single order and publicly throw away his badge? Not to mention that’s terribly unrealistic for a nation where significant portion of the population are extremely indoctrinated and at least half the top military staff in the American Reich are still die-hard Nazis.
This needed another fucking season. We should’ve had John lose his sanity over Thomas and kidnap him. It would’ve made for great storytelling. If the writers wanted to drum up the “Absolute power corrupts absolutely” trope, they could’ve... but not in half a bloody episode! Way to butcher 4 seasons worth of character development in 30 fucking minutes.

Fantastic scene. Thoughts on the ending: it's not so much the ending I have a problem with, as how there wasn't a chance for everything that happened between this scene and the last one in episode 10 to be fleshed out. It certainly feels like there was a considerable time gap that would have made a fantastic season 5, with so much content to play with (e.g. Kido with the Yakuza, BCR establishing an independent nation, better understanding inter-dimensional travel, John potentially returning to our world). Sad that a fifth season wasn't ordered.

Loved this show but I was very upset that Rommel never appeared nor they never looked into another fascinating aspect. In OTL the reason that Operation Valkyrie was able to go into action by the Anti-Nazi movement inside Germany was the disaster at the front. In this timeline those officers, largely Wehrmacht and Kriegsmarine, would have to keep their hatred of the Nazi’s hidden for decades. The show could’ve established an underground cabal of the Anti-Nazi movement teaming up with the Resistance.
I feel this scene could’ve ended even better during the genuine meeting if Rommel had been present, retired as he is, because Himmler wanted his input. Instead the Desert Fox launches his own Anti-Nazi coup in coordination with the Resistance, would that not make an even more brilliant cliff-hanger ending. I know it's like the main part of the show, but I dont think this show would suffer much if the fantastical portal/universes just weren't apart of the plot. If it was literally just an alternate world plain and simple and John was more of a conflicted protagonist.

I really wished Amazon had dumped a little more money into the show for a 5th season. This episode just hyped everything up to the max and the last episode just kinda screwed things up. If this had been the ending to Season 4 and then Season 5 came along to wrap things up it would've been fantastic.
John's story being revealed about how he only joined the Reich to save his family and slowly climb the ranks to ensure their safety while never being a true Nazi was great. It would've been so much more satisfying if he had been the one to get rid of the Nazi ideals and return America to it's former glory after taking power. Bill mentions the nuclear Arsenal that America had access to so if America went to war against Berlin in a fight for the restoration of America, then that would've made an amazing Season 5.
Instead, he goes full steam ahead for another round of the Holocaust which feels totally backwards from the development of his entire character. Maybe he could go to war with the west and take control of the neutral zone and the west coast and THEN restore America or he could just forget those entirely and restore what he already has control over. Just going Hitler 2.0 wasn't great storytelling. I guess the actual ending to the show wasn't awful, but it could've been so much better.
Basically, if I could have it my way it would be:
    1) End Season 4 with the coup
    2) Season 5 is about John rejecting Nazi ideals and restoring America back to itself again
    3) Either John captures the Neutral Zone and the West Coast or just crushes the BCR and friends and forgets about them
    4) When John starts to restore America, Berlin gets angry and war happens
    5) Ending determines whether John succeeds or fails in the end
Sorry for the long essay I just love this show so much LOL

If any of this happened in real life I guarantee that the ending of this series would be entirely different. The Japanese got nuked twice and still wanted to continue fighting the war. Really don’t think a couple of minor terrorist attacks would be enough convince the Japanese government to evacuate the pacific states. The Nazis on the other hand were ruthless with indefinite hunger for victory. WW2 they literally fought until the last man was standing. If they were a arms reach away from taking over an entire continent a leadership assassination wouldn’t do anything. Next person in line would step up and take the job. Realistically speaking it would be a divided empire like Rome. More than likely that’s how the story would’ve ended.

    • @voss0749
      @voss0749 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

Japan was tied down with a war in china. The pacific states provided resources but should have a been a tributary state with a puppet govt not directly under Japans thumb. Japan in OTL had no interest in a occupation of the US they wanted to force the US to the peace table so they could get control of oil supplies.

Japan in real life wouldn't be able to occupy all that territory. Also in history there has been many instances where assassinations and purges worked pretty well just look at Rome. Also Nazi America separating from the German Nazi Reich would make sense since Nazi America is a nuclear armed power of its own reclaiming it would mean nuclear war.

This show really took me into its world in the beginning. It was so cool to see an alternative world. It was like learning something new in each episode since you really ARE new to this world as a watcher of the series. Things are different.
In the beginning the characters were really interesting. Learning about Joe, John - than stories like Wegeners, where he tried to become a traitor.
The thing is, in the beginning each and every story and the plot twists behind them were believeble and made sense. Where in the end it was just like "yeah... oh and John finessed them all btw, they are all dead".
Seasons 1-3 were so cool. Even stories like the romance between Joe and Nicole Dörmer. It really gave you an inside of what living in this world was like, not because it was massively relevant to the story, but that was what made that show for me.
Epicness of seeing those huge Nazi-monuments in Berlin like the Volkshalle and than of course the replacement of the statue of liberty. Those were great scenes. This show really had something utterly unique to it. Seeing further Nazi-technology like the plains or the VTOL ships. The cinematic shots that it had were awesome.
And than season 4 came. Season 3 was getting kinda meh with them writing Tagomi out of the story but it was still good, nothing to complain about that much, but than that damn fourth season came...
Lets keep it short; wokeness killed this series.
BCR appearing, wearing not only plot-armour but rather sitting in a plot-deathstar.
BCR: "Dude lets plant some bombs to give them a hard time"
Japanese empire: "Nah, fuck america ... we fought the biggest war of all time to make it here and culturized half of the US but nah, lets get out of here"
On the other side of the story - the portal bunker was unconquerable as Himmler stated but apparently some para-military resistance warriors are able to storm it all in like half an hour.
This is the most disappointing end of a series that Ive ever watched. Game of Thrones was rushed and I was not satisfied at all but THIS ... I wasnt even disappointed, I was just sad.
We knew that it would come since the only thing that season 4 was lacking was the lgbtq-resistance-rainbow army riding down to Berlin on unicorns but come on. What a great show it was in the beginning and how much potential it had before things turned sideways somewhere in season 3.
For me, they couldve left out the whole parallel-universe sci-fi stuff. I just liked the scenario of the axis having won WW2 and seeing the outcome of it all. Things like Joes father designing that damm that was supposed to be built across the mediterranean sea. I was looking forward to see Africa and Europe as 3. Reich versions. Like I said in the first few sentences - viewing things that arent from our world. But they killed that idea quickly and the show went to shit. I dont know man, such waste. *mic drop*

Your comment honestly speaks for pretty much how I felt about his whole series when I watched it a few months ago. This series was one of my favorite tv shows ever when I watch the first two seasons. I genuinely believe that if Amazon gave the series 1 or 2 more seasons and Frank Spotnitz didn’t leave the show, this series would have been legendary.

This show, right up through this scene, made you realize empathize with Smith, a fucking Nazi. That's not a small feat. After season one, where he is the antagonist, he becomes the main character in the second season (which was by far the best) and you really begin to sympathize with his willingness to do anything to keep his family safe. And season three and four make it clear that although he has lost himself in the Nazi order, that he was clearly never a devoted Nazi.
I'm not sure Smith needed a "redemption arc" and (for obvious reasons) I can see why the writers would have hesitated to give him one, but he deserved a more concrete end of his story than 'Sorry wife, I just don't know how to stop the mass murder of millions of people' even after he has succeeded in making his family untouchable and his word is essentially law. And this came only a handful of episodes after he was in tears talking to the Alt version of his Jewish friend in the Alt-verse, apologizing for letting him die. How could that Smith return to his universe and instantly start planning to build more death camps? Obviously the show was fucked up by Amazon 'lite-cancelling' the show, and just telling the team to wrap it up, but it ruined 4 seasons of character development of Smith. Hell, I feel like if they at least told them 4 was the last season from the get-go, they could have written Smith to start to appear MORE fanatically Nazi than we ever thought, showing the audience that he was too far gone. Like, how do you include the season with his Jewish friend and expect us to believe he then wants to murder a few million more Jews? Shouldn't he have, like, spat in the guys face if he "doesn't know how to stop?" But it honestly feels like they had filmed 90% of the season and then some bureaucrat popped his head in the door and said "Uh, guys, the shows cancelled, so... like, can you shoot a few more scenes and just wrap it up?"
And I won't even get into the last scene with the portal. Unintelligible nonsense. So disappointing.
