    i recently heard someone describe this concept as choosing “honest materials”. in other words not buying things that are made to look like they’re made of another material. for example, if you can’t afford wood floors, don’t buy fake wood floors find a nice linoleum that isn’t trying to pretend it’s something else. even though ‘cheap’ is commonly used to critique quality it’s hard not to evoke affordability & issue of privilege. ‘cheap’ in the financial sense would be a misnomer as well since high price tags do not always equal high quality anymore

      I wish there was just a blanket disclaimer on interior design channels about what they mean by "affordable" and that actually a not cheap looking home cannot be achieved on *any* budget... there are some where it's just not possible. The reality is, the cost just to clean a used rug alone is more than some people's rug budgets. And even when you're buying used in lower budgets, you're mostly just getting a used slightly nicer synthetic rug. So when you're in that situation, you either have to have no rug or buy something super cheap looking if you need something to keep your feet/floors warm.

    • @ChromeDrone.
      @ChromeDrone. 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@96llm I hear you, but I think Paige is making valid points that hold across a variety of budgets. Personally, I know many who have furnished their homes for almost free - fb marketplace is full of frantic "moving sales" where people give away things for free, and it's easy these days to go to "buy nothing" groups and get almost anything. Tips like going for natural fiber rugs instead of synthetic, or for unique art instead of cookie-cutter stuff, apply anywhere you shop IMO

    • @happyhiro
      @happyhiro 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +27

      i know its not what people want to hear / believe but it really is much more complicated than waiting for the right opportunity. Lol my first rug was a target rug I dug out of a dumpster (albeit a clean dumpster) on my way home from class one day.
      that being said, I don’t expect someone to convey *all* of this nuance in a youtube video about interior design. it’s not even necessarily their responsibility / duty. I just think its always worth starting a convo about

    This is solid advice, though it gets difficult when you don’t have the cash, period or you’ll never prioritize a $1000 rug over a cool trip you want to take, ever.
    Some things like a rug can wait until you have the right thing. Other things perhaps can’t. I don’t care what anyone says, no, I can’t live without a sofa for months as I save for ‘the right one’. I’ll feel uncomfortable in my own home. You can’t wait for a bed or a table/workspace. You can’t wait for clothes storage unless your wardrobe fits in one suitcase.
    But a rug, a credenza? Maybe those can wait.
    While I agree I’d rather have nothing than a cheap thing for those wait-able items, I also think it’s ok to accept a cheap temporary option while you hunt for the right thing. I’ve been hunting for a great secondhand credenza for years. Cant afford a really good new one. Can’t wait quite that long as I have lots of books so I got a Kallax. But I’m looking for a better one! I think that’s ok.

    • @channamasala1
      @channamasala1 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@potsnpaninis I think when designers say the rug "looks cheap" what they mean is that it looks synthetic and from a big box retailer, like someone anyone could have. It doesn't necessarily mean that the rug IS cheap (even large synthetic rugs from big box retailers can be expensive! ) or even that the pattern or color of it is ugly.
      I actually like those black and white patterned rugs which seem to take their style from some Moroccan patterns. I kind of see what she means in that it looks like the rug everyone has, and you can tell by looking at it that it's synthetic.
      But also I don't care much. I have two cats, which means that while my living room has a vintage rug, the rest of my place has cheap IKEA rugs, because they'll scratch and vomit all over them.
      Plus, yeah, the same designers who say "hide your ugly builder basic LVP floor with a big rug!" then say "if you can't afford a quality rug made with real materials don't have any rug at all" -- okay, but not all of us have $2000 to spend on a rug, or want to spend that much on a rug, so are we supposed to hide the ugly LVP, or 'not have a rug at all'?

Curtains that hang two or three inches above the floor make me irrationally angry.

What are the alternatives? Linoleum? Tiles? They also deceive material that they are not. Concrete? Expensive. Of course, it's better to have old countertops than ugly and tacky ones, but what if you don't have any countertops and money for stone? Wooden countertops are hard to maintain... and is there really enough wood and stone for everyone? Your houses look cheap because they are... and there's nothing wrong with that. If you can’t quickly replace with a decent stone, at least switch it out for butcher block, Boos even IKEA. In a pinch even a laminate counter would not be toxic like that resin one. Get rid of it asap please for your health. You can even do ikea laminate butcher block and the main visual area in a marble remnant. Mixing is good because sometimes better to wait until you do a full kitchen reno to do the final countertop so it’s all planned and designed

The queen size ones drape down all the way to the floor, and since I store things under my bed, that makes it so I don't have to have a bedskirt. Great, authentic design advice about DIY’s often looking less upscale (after all the time and effort).
    Best not to try and make materials look like other materials.
    If surface is laminate, thats a valid surface that looks best when not pretending to look like marble.
    Lots of architects choose laminate and plywood as authentic building materials, and make them look high end by keeping them clean and simple, and true to their original form.

    From a lifetime thrifter:
    1. Think long-term. It takes some time to build up things you like.
    2. Thrift for natural fabrics. Synthetic fabrics tend to pill, shine, and snag, whereas linen and cotton look and feel better the more you use them. I look for cotton and linen bedding, tablecloths, and curtains to use as-is or turn into other projects. Run them in a hot dryer for an hour to kill anything, then you can wash according to directions.
    3. Thrift for natural materials, like wood and metal (especially furniture). Unless you're into kitsch and love retro plastic (some of it is super cute), avoid anything plastic.
    4. Thrift for both original art and frames. Avoid buying anything mass-manufactured (even second hand) or that is a flat representation of what was originally textured (like a poster of an oil painting). But you can find original oil paintings, drawings, historic prints, and loads of other great art super cheap at thrift stores. Swap your thrifted art into different thrifted frames.
    5. Instead of buying new pillow inserts, I thrift down inserts, then drop them into a second pillow case closed with a hair tie or rubber band (to prevent escaping feathers), wash them in hot water, and dry them on high.

    I find cheaper items are good for when you want something higher quality but want to spend time finding it, and it’s even better if the cheap item is used or vintage. For example, I didn’t know what I wanted for my coffee table, but I found a steamer trunk in my grandmothers place after she passed, and I used it before finding a coffee table I actually felt fit the space. The trunk was fine, but it wasn’t a part of my vision for the space, and having it be not what I envisioned made me actively look for something else.
    This is especially good when you’re on the Facebook marketplace grind lol

    The sound you're making in "curtains" is a glottal stop, made in the back or our mouths like a little cough, noticeable in Cockney accents. But it's still a 't' (there are about four sounds we use for letter 't's), and I'm sure everyone does it sometimes. A full on hard 't' in the middle of words sounds unnatural in American English, I think. So don't worry about it. 😁

Or I get a slightly smaller one, but seeing as I have a chaise that might look weird.

The most important thing we learned was to have no trapped space when designing a page and it's the same for hanging pictures and prints on a wall. Dont trap space on a gallery wall. Looks so much better when everything is close together with even spaces, like the lovely gallery wall you show here.

      Even the orange and yellow can look good with the proper wall color, accessories and cabinet hardware. Lmao on your last point, I noticed one of the examples of bad fabrics included my cheap a** rug 🙃 Hehe oops called out. Not replacing it any time soon but still love the tips, as always 👌🏼

    Take one of your best friend's! I've done that before, and it was SO much fun! We danced the night away, and had so many laughs.... and who knows, maybe you meet the 'one', or make new friends! ♥

    I really liked the pinch pleat in your last video. My ceilings are super low so the pile at the bottom on the floor is gross. Im going to take up the slack on my grommet curTains and do my own pinch pleat.

    Thank you for addressing trends making your place look cheap. So many people follow the "trend recipe" and all the homes look the same......it's depressing!

    If it was me I'd rather you change it to just you coming than some random date guy turfing up making it awkward for you. The couple might want to use the seat for another work pal or something like that. Enjoyed the video. Great advice as always. I despise cheap rugs and cheap art the most but agree with you on everything 🤜🏻
