My college-age son was visiting the kid's section of our local art museum where kids can make some art. Just for kicks he did an extremely simple little watercolor of a bird on a beach. He brought it home but was going to THROW IT AWAY. I grabbed it, framed it, and hung it by my bed and every night I look at it and think about how beautiful it is and how much I love him.

Awesome video. Was surprised with the vaguely pro fast-fashion shirt advice. Approaching clothing with the same thought, consideration and integrity that you put into interiors, will always win. It’s literally the same exact home decor advice you give-applied to clothing. Boom!

    • @Yahsbsuq
      @Yahsbsuq 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Agreed. But I do think that it is a bit more difficult with home decor as it is always on display and is usually (not always) more expensive than clothing.
But I agree. The same could be said about a lot of clothing. A video of the same topic would probably discuss having a great quality coat, good pair of boots, jumpers and role necks made from great fabric like Marino wool or cashmere, etc.
It’s the overall mindset of being intentional with your purchases, knowing your style and sticking with timeless pieces of high quality

I think coffee tables books are great but I personally think they should be carefully chosen and not just any random book or a book that just looks nice or matches the decor. I think you'll get more out of the book if it's about a subject you actually love or find interesting. Otherwise if you've bought a coffee table book because it has a pink cover to place on a shelf to match your aesthetic I think you can easily get tired of it. But if it's a book on a subject you actually like you might even read it and get inspired by it or learn something. I studied art history and I have a ton of exhibition catalogues from shows I've visited and artist monographs. I also love gardening so I have collection of garden/landscape design books and I love pulling one out to flip through for inspiration and they bring me a lot of joy. To me having a stack of books that you don't actually read seem a bit pointless.

When I was in college 35 years ago, I spent $300 on an oversized painting that is a self portrait of the artist. I’ve loved that painting ever since. It’s lived in every house I’ve had. At one point, I took it to my office so I could look at it while working. Right now, it hangs in my front entry. It’s huge and dramatic. I’ve never regretted spending those $300.

Lovely! Investing in original art that is a few hundred to a few thousand dollars is always an excellent investment, especially if it's a piece you really love and admire; Paige really highlighted that well in this video! The works of art our eCommerce gallery creates lowest tier starts in the ($300's) three-hundred's price range and then goes up from there. Coffee table books are such an interesting choice; I feel like the only people I know who have them are like over 50? I've never totally understood the purpose, like these days even if you do leave guests to get bored in your living room, they're more likely to be on their phones than reading a coffee table book. I wasn't sure that coffee table books were still a thing, but if I ever decide to have them I'd want them to be something cool and meaningful.

Paige you are really helping me with the small, 1940 cottage-bungalow I bought a year ago.I have loved mcm for a long time, but it doesn't "fit" the vibe of this charming little place with its two round windows, traditional fireplace and niches. I'm honoring its cozy nature with pre-loved stuff including some of my mcm pieces. For example, instead of a trendy, brand new upholstered bed, I picked up a 50"s blond wooden bookcase headboard for $8(!) and my home's becoming the eclectic, highly personal space I've dreamed of. *Absolutely about the art!*
~I have a photograph from my nurse when I had major surgery in 2010. I had just moved into a new apartment 2 weeks beforehand, and this was a housewarming gift from her. It's a black and white photo of silhouetted birds on a drooping wire. She even developed the photo herself.
~I also have a drawing from my friend, actor Jim Hoffmaster ('Kermit' on the show, "Shameless").

Thank you for your refreshing content. I watch a decent amount of YT design accounts but your videos have gotten me so inspired to take action, make decisions, use what I have in new ways, and buy/invest in a few things too. I just bought 2 picture ledges like your French friend on Check out this F*cking Home had displayed and can't wait to fill it with my coffee table books and continue to collect. Thanks again!

I love thrifting. I have found AMAZING treasures. My favorites are vases, some worth over $200. My favorite find.... 1965 unglazed Bitossi cats! Value $500, I paid $5 for both. Those are definitely forever pieces.

I love interior design but formally know almost nothing about it. So, when your first mention was the Ikea mirror, I was very pleased with myself. That was one of the first items I bought for my new home. Unfortunately, I also bought some trendy/cheaper items that I'm always feeling I want to get rid of. Great advice! Thank you.

Real late to commenting on this, buut on the topic of frames and getting things framed; got a litography framed for my partner this week, and the framer/framing person (is that even a word?) told me to consider frames as the clothing of the art piece. You get some real nice clothing for your piece and it will elevate and protect your art for decades to come. Poor framing will do the opposite.
And it’s such a fun process, with literally thousands of possible combinations. What kind of frame do we go for? What size mat? What color mat? Should we do the mat on top of or under the piece? The result is undoubtedly much more interesting that anything IKEA can provide (and I love ikea like it’s my third child).

I basically agree with everything you said but I will never ever get coffee table books 😅 What is their purpose?? Are they really just decor or is anybody ever actually looking at them? I think I’ve never opened anybody’s coffee table books in my life. And why do you need several? If you stack them you can’t even see how pretty they are or what they’re about? Why not use books you actually enjoy reading? This has been confusing me for years lol That being said I do own a few - they’re just very mysterious to me

Big cutting boards are very heavy. It's a significant downside in a small kitchen. Husband spent a lot of money on one, and it's the biggest regret and money wasted. When you are making sandwiches on it you have to clean it. Lifting it is a challenge, holding it up to rinse etc is even more challenging. You will avoid cutting raw meat on it because it's cumbersome to clean. Also certain wood tones may get tiring after a while. Nice to have in a huge kitchen or for corraling things, but a smaller bread board is much more user friendly and can be as beautiful of an accent

Ah silver. I inherited silver trays from my mom that are very special to me as is the 1930s art deco silver plate luncheon flatware set my great aunt gave me for my first apartment. To match up with them my china pattern is Lenox Lace Point which has a platinum rim. It's a dainty 1970s pattern with a grey and peach floral design... I bought my first place setting in 1974 while working for Marshall Field and Co. in the Walnut Room. I still love and use everything 50 years later.

Getting close to 100k! How cute would it be if you hit 100k on your house tour with Ma and Pa Wassel 🥺
My hot take is that people in the comments pressed about coffee table books need to get more obsessed with specific random topics. Architecture, art, nature photography, even a pretty cookbook... coffee table books are just like real-life Pinterest, people! Or just get pretty editions of regular books if you're more of a reader type.

I’d be super interested to see a video kinda like this of sorta “durable” interior pieces to invest in that will survive handling by moving companies, some you mentioned could be regrets within the context of moving a lot (trees cannot be transported internationally due to biosecurity laws, mirrors / glass coffee tables are highly breakable, humid climates can quickly destroy certain types of plastic and wood) ~ love your videos !

I've just discovered your channel and it's all I love and the fact that you're very challenging is SO interesting! My grandparents from Denmark had a wonderful cosy home with furniture from the sixties because life was easier at that time and workers could afford new furniture so when I go to Ikea I sometimes step into pieces that look like what they had. Their children didn't like this old stuff today it would be vintage! Thank you!

    Totally portable and no installation.

lmao, it's very funny that I can only agree with the tree (because I love plants)
but have specific dislikes for basically every other item in this list 😅
but _especially_ the dimmers are obnoxious af. the place we moved into has them in the dining room and master bedroom and they've never done anything but annoy everyone who lives here-- we never use them on purpose and honestly avoid using those lights as much as we can in general

I totally agree with the frame thing!
We don't have a lot of money, so Custom is out of the question. if I get Art I still buy a ikea frame so I can put it up immediately! because thrifting the right frame for a piece can take a while and I don't want to wait until I can look at my favorite new thing. so I'll just change the frame later when I find the right one.
Like you said in the other video interior design can be a longer term project ^^
