    Is it just me or is a weighted senko not a light bait?

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      The lure in the video is not weighted. That said, many bass anglers throw unweighted Senkos on spinning gear because it's difficult for them to throw with baitcasting outfits. Hence the reason for this video.
      But even though a Senko is used in the video instead of a fly, the principles taught in the video remain the same and are applicable for lures lighter than a Senko. So pay less attention to the actual lure used, and focus on the techniques taught instead.
      Thanks!

    Glenn,
    Your videos are always instructive, clear, and helpful.
    I'm a 64-year-old BassHole who just started using a baitcaster in the past 2 weeks. Good to know I can throw a lighter lure with one, and how to do so!
    Keep the tips coming! (My favorites are still how to avoid getting hooked with hard baits -- hold the bait first -- and how to get unsnagged using a bow and arrow technique).

    Glenn. A big THANK YOU for this video. I kmow that this video is old given thst we are now in 2022. I was sooo frustrated with a baitcaster Lews Smash MedHeavy Fast-action 6’6” combo rod. Birdnesting was a common issue and almost gave up on my baitcaster ( was going to sell it). Taking advice of lowering the brake and loosen spool tension, My casts are now like 75 to 125 feet with a plastic swimbait. My eyes popped out in excitement. No more need to muscle my casts. A flick of the wrist and the “whip” effect of the rod did the trick. THANK YOU THANK THANK YOU

    Finally, the secret is out! I have been using a baitcaster to throw light lures for years. I have an old Berkley light action rod with a pfluger reel and 8# mono line. You can get them dialed in to throw am 1/8 oz spinner or crank bait a good distance. Great combo for those days when the bass are picky and you have to finesse things a bit! Best rule, don't try to kill it on the cast!

    What would you suggest for line preference for lighter style baits? Specifically weightless plastics?

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      For weightless plastics, I like to use 15lb Tatsu fluorocarbon line. The line sinks slowly, so it won't hinder the action of the weightless plastic.

    Would it be a good idea of i put 20 pound braid with a fluoro leader to increase the distance of my cast? I believe that for me as a bank fisherman distance is not always possible and really not needed that much as here in South Africa in the farm dams we fish they are mostly close to the bank just as it is with your dams. Is braid the answer? I recently changed all my rods, spinning AND casting to braid with a leader. Loving it.

    With BFS reels and rods is it the weight of the spool or the action of the rod or both? And does line type matter 10lb flouro vs 20 braid

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's more about the rod than the baitcaster. Line type and size isn't a factor, really. Once you have it down, you don't even notice what line you're using.

    Thx Glen for the video and tip for a rookie baitcaster like me. In the video I noticed you cast with the reel on its side, meaning the spool axis looked like it was perpendiculat to the water. Was that correct what i saw? Cause i tried last weekend for the first time and my spool axle would have been parallel to the water. And of course i did not lob my cast and i got a mess.
    I tried throwing side arm. for me seems to be less likely getting a backlash. Do u think i should throw sidearm, and when i get better , move to your over head cast?

    Does the reel matter for this? I've got a abu garcia black max reel and was wondering if going with a higher end reel would help cast lighter lures due to the higher end drag systems and better quality components.

    • @lukkyluciano
      @lukkyluciano 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      how light? You are never going to effectively cast a 1/64oz or 1/32oz jig. I use abu revo stx and revo sx and routinely cast 1/8oz easily but I think I could with any baitcaster. Even 1/16oz with a heavier gulp or plastic can be done. Best advice he gave is dont cast hard, he didn't really show how to cast light lures though, I was expecting a trout or crappie magnet.....not a senko.

    Good pointers, as always. Sometimes we forget that the rod's action can be your friend (or enemy) when trying to cast light stuff. It takes getting control of your rod , as well as your reel. Thanks for the tips Glenn... keep'em coming.

      First I got myself the right rod like you mentioned (Abu Garcia blackmax 3 combo 6.6 fast action 2pieces rod)
      Secondly, will put at min the magnetic breaks. (Had them at max lol)
      Thirdly, will use the wrist and keep my arm to my side (very very difficult and takes lots of practice)
      Wish me luck lol
      THanks for this video again

    I have the Duckett Triad 7'3 MH paired with the abu garcia pro, I absolutely love this set-up for casting very light soft plastic rigs, I did have to adjust cast control and my brake so that I could cast these very light rigs! ty for the insight, fantastic videos!

    Great tips. One of the traps that fall into when casting is thinking that I didn't cast as far as the guy I was watching in the video. I am lured into trying to cast farther but swinging harder only to backlash. I think that the videos just make the cast look very far; like the writing on a side view mirror, "Objects are closer than they appear." I appreciate the review on setting the spool tension. I had always set mine so that the lure would fall slowly and stop t the floor with the spool stopping immediately. This always felt to tight.

    Is there a technique in casting on that angle? I always want to cast like that but I always fail and get a backlash. Right now all I could do is side arm cast. Any insight would be appreciated. I think this angle of casting is helpful if there are bushes on your side to.

      I prefer a little heavier, such as 12-15lb line. And line that's easy to cast, such as Seaguar Tatsu. Seems to work best for me.

    • @bassresource
      @bassresource  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Leaving 2 on is a good starting point for light baits. You can go down from there if you wish, but usually 2 is about right.
