  • Learn how to use mono or stereo delay plugins to add size, depth, dimension and excitement to the verse vocals in a rock song using the session for "The Silver String" by Saosin originally mixed by Beau Burchell.
Delay can help the vocal sit in the mix, or be used as an effect that stands out.
Joel uses Cubase, Waves H Delay, and the stock Cubase delays, but the same concepts apply to any DAW and any delay plugin.

Never thought of layering delays as I always assumed it would muddy up the mix. But with smart subtlety it ended up sounding pretty good. Great video!

One thing I like to do, mainly with vocals is put the delay/reverb on at whatever setting I decided and compress heavily after. What this does is during the singing, the vocal is kinda dry, but after, it gets wet af, which is exactly what I'm looking for pretty often. Kinda like a dynamic delay, but the budget version :D
This is a great trick also, if you are making creative sounds with synths for example. Compressing after the reverb makes it sound like the ambiance was from the recorded source, which I love to. I simply despise the sound of disjointed reverbs :D

Love doing that with jst keys/vocals bus glue. Stays out of the way of the dry sound, but lingers for a while after, making it more cohesive with the mix.

That's a great idea. I'll definitely try that out in the song I mix. Thanks for a good tip man.

Great tip overall. Can you elaborate on how a stereo delay with identical (apart from minor filter frequencies) settings make things wider?

That voice took me back to myspace era! "Seven Years" by Saosin and "Unholy Confessions" by A7x were like the must anthems of every emo/punk scene girl... p.s great lesson!

Isn't the "bathroom" stereo delay going to be just a mono delay with the same settings (apart from the very slight variations in the settings which shouldn't produce a noticeable stereo effect)? You're panning essentially the same (delayed) signal left and right so that would just bring them to the middle, right?

OceillTV the slight differences you are talking about are the ones causing a stereo effect. It's not a real stereo feeling, but it's in some cases enough to get the part to feel right

rolaca11 I mean that's sorta my point. I feel as though the differences introduced here (filering differences + mix knob differences) are not enough to introduce any sort of a noticeable stereo effect in pretty much any capacity. I guess I should just try it and see for myself though. Easy to A/B: Just set up a mono delay with the same settings and see if you can hear a difference. Or better yet, let a blind audience see if they hear one.

This was a hard lesson to watch because that vocal clip was terribly annoying.
