It would be cool if you would make a vid on the concept of "gluing" things together with compression when it comes to putting them on a bus/master track. Dumb question Joel, but I'm a complete noob starting to learn. You say lets grab a transient stem. Something with a lot of transients. Can you explain what that means?

Compression was the thing, that I ignored in some cases cause I just dont understanded how it works. Now Im inderstand, thank you a lot!
With a slow release you actually allow the compressor to duck quiet parts that come right after loud parts. Not good for vocals, hides the details in the voice. A fast release will make sure those quiet nuances aren't hidden. If it sounds over compressed, slow down your attack.

Found your video on basic mixing, then thought I wonder if they have one on compression.. Sure do! The next thing I would like to see is What can I do to make my mix louder? I have issues with it distorting before it gets to the same volume as most regular music. Do you need to compress all the busses or instruments coming in and out? is there a better way to compress the Master bus?

Will a compressor behave the same in different DAW's? Like will it have the same effects in lets say, ReaperFM compared to Protools etc?
The basic functions are essentially the same, but the specifics of how it behaves and sounds will vary depending on which specific plugin you use (like how all amps have a treble knob, but the way they behave when you turn the knob is different)
why do you keep calling the entire waveform a "transient"?

Please do not follow these "formula", this is not the proper way to use a compressor. Keep in mind that the release time is '"activated" only when the signal goes BELOW threshold. So basically in most of your video the release quite never activated because you turned down the threshold to hard. The same goes for the ratio. If you put the ratio to 30:1 like you do and your signal goes like 5db above threshold what is the point beside ruining the spectrum of your sound ? You can just set 5:1 or 10:1 if you really wanna sqash things. Always set your threshold first at a sweet spot that depends on what youre looking to achieve (get transients only ? get transients and body ? get body only ?), then tweak the attack fast (I wanna squash transients) slow (I wana let go transients), set release time fast (I wanna let go body, this means I set up my threshold above body ok ?) or slow (I wanna squash body too). Now set the ratio depending on what is above your threshold and how far you want this signal to be above this threshold. This is the correct way to apply compressors explained in a few sentences (hope its clear). Note also, that many compressors can also work as expanders as well using negative parameters.
Sorry my man, but that's not true. First of all, have you ever compressed anything hard and played with the release? Does the compressor react and sound the same when you have a fast and a slow release?
Second of all, no disrespect to you, but to tell someone who has been earning a living for years by mixing that he doesn't know how a compressor works is pretty arrogant. That should be a sign that you have to investigate more before posting, even if it contradicts what you thought. Have a good one!

A beginner wouldn’t know what to look for as far as body and transient releasing. This video is meant for the very basics, what you’re mentioning is for someone who’s experienced and can manipulate what to do dial in, in order to get the sound they’re looking for in their head. This is a great tutorial for someone to get to know their compression plug ins.
@@sarahreed4223 Thank for your comment Sarah. I understand your point, but from my experience, starting to learn compressors this way, i.e. thinking it in terms of level control lead to bad compression. I receive too many beginners mix when I can hear the compressor ruins the signal, you have no idea how much. I teach my students the way round, to shape the sounds, and they discover by themselves as a side effect that you also control the level of the signal. Their mix is much better from the start. cheers

man I love these videos but with out sounding like a jerk, is there anyway you can make them more interesting to watch? there's something always so dry and boring about these sort of producing videos just always looking at the DAW and listening to a voice. it's like i'm taking a college course, but not in a good way (seems like a lecture from a prof). I like learning but not really thinking about the fact that I'm learning because its just fun. My suggestion is use more split screen shots of people talking to *show their thinking, not just how they use their tools. And also edit the videos for brevity and spice it with some humour like ola's videos. People want to be entertained while they learn something, it makes it 100% more effective and will generate much greater numbers of views.
You should be more than happy for getting free education here instead of acting so spoilt
