    I found this channel while trying to understand shielding. Absolute gem of a channel. I am thinking about putting a phase switch knob on a knock off strat. but I’m worried about the grounding being wonkey.

    • @DVVVDM
      @DVVVDM 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The Potto I installed a phase switch on my tele and never had any grounding issues. For the tele I had to separate the metal casing on the pickups. I’m not sure if something similar is needed for a strat, but just follow a guide online and you’ll be fine ; ).

    Dylan this was great thank you very much. It’s important to note that if you purchase this guitar beyond the entry level finish that you’re holding, and into a “relic” finish or any of the other finishes under the title “custom” the wiring actually comes REVERSED. That is to say that the standard Tele wiring is what you receive in the case and that the vintage wiring is installed standard.

    Fender changed that cap to .001uf on some of their CS guitars. I recently played a CS 51 Tele and the neck pup was very usable in that position and I really liked the blend on the neck position. I think the shopowner refered to it as Modified '51 Nocaster wiring. Anyway, another option for a Tele. Really like your channel!

    I've wired one of my guitars with a custom tone circuit I've not seen suggested elsewhere, which combines the functionality of a blend and tone pot. Arrange things so that when the switch is in the relevant position, one of the pickups feeds the voltage pot directly, while the other one feeds through a fixed resistor to the tone-pot circuit, and then through another fixed resistor from the tone-pot circuit to the voltage pot (where it joins the signal from the first pickup). In my case, the "direct wired" pickup is a bridge humbucker which has the top four strings muted, while the tone-controlled pickup is the neck humbucker. The effect of this is that when playing chords, I get a bright and punchy bass string and four more subdued treble strings. On my channel's video of "Misty", I had the pot set so that the two bass strings are noticeably louder than the treble strings, but not outrageously so.
    I'm not sure how useful this kind of split between the tone of the upper strings and lower strings would be with tunings other than my own Flat Finger Tuning (G-D-d-f-g#-b), but I really doubt Flat Finger Tuning is the only one that could benefit from such an approach.

    • @flatfingertuning727
      @flatfingertuning727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would think that if a guitarist is going to substitute for a a bass player, it might be most useful to have a pre-amp designed for severe crossover distortion (so signals near zero would disappear entirely) but a heavily-filtered output, and then have the guitarist play power chords. That combination of effects should have been easy to achieve in the vacuum-tube era, and would have produced sound an octave below the bottom note of the power chord.

    The one fender video for the 70th anniversary it says they put a 10k resistorinstead of the 15. Is that what takes away the bassy tone and makes it More trebly sounding?

  • @Daniel3NT
    @Daniel3NT 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Nice video! So in blend mode "10" is the usual 2nd position (both pickups equal). I wonder can you set up blend mod in a way that "0" is just bridge pick-up, "5" is both pickup equal (like usual 2 position) and "10" just neck pick-up, with blending in between (from mostly bridge/little neck to mostly neck- little bridge)? In that case I can just replace pick-up selector with blend mod pot and still have my tone pot (i.e. have three knobs and no pickup selector at all) and have additional tonal options with blend mode, kind of like strat position 2.

  • @robjgolde3221
    @robjgolde3221 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Is it possible to tweak that first position so that when you blend in the neck pickup, it gets blended in series instead of parallel?

    • @flatfingertuning727
      @flatfingertuning727 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't think of any reasonable way to design a blend pot that could go all the way from 100% bridge to 100% neck. If one wanted to be able to dial between e.g. a 50-50 mix and 100% bridge, one could wire a 100K pot across the neck pickup, tie the bottom of the neck pickup to the top of the bridge, wire the bottom of the bridge to ground, and have the wiper of the neck pot feed the top of a 500K volume pot, but that wouldn't be able to dial the bridge below 50%.

    Not sure exactly how the 2 volume knobs interact when on the middle position ? It’s not a straight forward blend 🤷🏻‍♂️

    I just watched Fender's video on the custom shop version. Evidently it comes with a complete rewired switch assembly in the case. The guy also mentioned that they used a smaller tone cap for the neck position. When you did the mod, did you notice the value of the cap? The guy also mentioned the 10k resistor. The broadcaster wiring diagram on Seymour Ducan's site shows a 15k resistor (presumably this is Fender's 1950 value).

    • @1truemoose

I will be doing this mod in the near future to a CV50 Blonde Squire to make it into a Micawber.... and having seen the Trogly Show with this guitar and the wiring diagram.... We can talk about it on our live show next thursday. It is not just swapping in a resistor. I had to find a different diagram because the Fender one made no sense. You actually have to basically totally rewire the guitar. It is not really something we can shoot in a way that people would watch. I can elaborate on our next livestream
