That’s the content I was looking for 😊 I’ve just bought a Tele recently, just stock Mexican Fender, and I’m planning to change all the hardware. So I was thinking about some custom options for wiring. What could it be and why and which configuration would fit my style. The funny thing here is that it’s my first Tele ever and I was always a Strat type w/Floyd Rose tremolo guy. And this history lesson is like a revelation to me. I could’ve never know about that kind of stuff if it wasn’t you who told me about that. I really appreciate what you do here on this channel because now I know and understand my gear better and I believe it’s not all I could learn.

My 52 reissue came wired Bridge, Neck, Neck with bass cap. And you could get Bridge and Neck together in the in between position. I eventually added a 5 way switch with a tone pot , Bridge, both in parallel, Neck, Neck with bass cap, and both in series (my favorite sound for lots of stuff). Took me quite a while to figure out the switch wiring 30 years ago. Another great vid Dylan!

Damn, I didn't knew about this dark circuit mode. Really awesome, loved the tone!
If you want to do mods next, I was thinking of something. How about a 4 way switch, having both pickups in parallel and in sieries. Then in the tone knob, there's a push-pull to invert the phase of the bridge position (making out-of-phase on the series config). I think I've saw someone doing that, but the real challenge would be to add this dark-circuit tone of the neck on the volume push-pull. Can it be done?
Anyway, congrats on the video. There's no one on TH-cam that explains things better than you, or in such deep details. Keep on rocking, man!

I have wired my Strat for N+B (neck and bridge in series, same polarity) and N+B- (neck and bridge in series, reverse polarity) on two of the positions of my 5-way switch. I thought I’d let you know my results.
*Just a note on my wiring terminology. X+X is two pickups in series, and X/X is two in parallel. A minus sign (e.g. X/X-) means one of them is REV polarity.
Series same polarity wiring largely hides each of two pickups’ sound. I do not hear anything like a sum of the two. Mostly a louder and warm (boring) output. The reason for this disappointing result is that the pickups are too far apart for cancellations to be in that interesting frequency band. Series REV polarity does yield a brand new tone which some describe it as “squawk”. I find myself using N+B- often, and N+B rarely.
I still get the classic N/M and M/B. I personally have no use for Middle by itself. The wiring to accomplish this with no appearance change took me a LONG time to figure out. Eventually, I went with a pull switch on the middle control and this availed to me a very special M+B-. Again, the series wiring takes away some of the extreme cancellation I’d get from M/B-, a good thing in this case. Having played with these sounds for a while, I plan to replace N+B with N/B.
I hope all of this might help you.

I have a strat middle pickup wired to its own volume (added 3rd pot) goes to Jack and master tone (.0017 tone cap, actually it took 2 caps to get that value.) When middle pickup is off, its just a tele with 3 way switch...but then I can bleed in that start quack...and can even use all 3 pickups together for a 3rd quack sound. By bleeding in, the level of quack can be fine tuned

I have a '52 reissue... tossed the ultra heavy baseball bat ash body for pine... now I can play it all night without any discomfort... and contrary to your tonewood debate, I think pine sounds better, warmer, fuller, and doesn't detract from what a Tele does.
When I got it it came with extras.
    1. An extra-crappy 6 barrel bridge
    2. A 1 Meg volume pot
    3. A capacitor to use as a treble bleed w/o a resistor.
When I bought it, I was clueless about wiring, but from my slot car days, knew how to solder. For some reason, the 1meg pot and bleed intrigued me, so I switched them out, put them in per included instructions.
Miraculously, it worked out, with the exception of the bridge... which I replaced with a Gotoh Strat saddle bridge... nice, but it sucked some of the classic Tele twang, which as I aged, became more important since I took up Country, after decades of Rock/Blues.
All I added since was a varistor in the bleed so I could tune it. Now this instrument, with the exception of the bridge, is perfect...
Folks are amazed at how tonefully bright the guitar is... ice pick tones w/o being painful.
I just built a Strat. I would appreciate a video like this one, including the history, of Strat wiring. I am having issues... mostly because I'm a non-conformist, and experimenting.. it's time to swallow my pride and start anew.. but would like your input for a traditional Strat. There are tones I'm chasing, and not getting.

My problem is at 68 years old, and after 5 strokes, my brain and my fingers have fights. I've been playing since the early '60's and know which strings and notes to hit, but my brain has cut out that knowledge. After the strokes, I now have weight limitations, and can no longer carry my AC30. That and the brain short outs, make the pleasure of my playing, more work (that I have to work really hard at!). I have (throughout the years of my career), I have many friends, who I don't like to name, but you would recognize the names. Touring and recording, My favorite combination is my Tele, and a VOX AC30. Now, after living in Colorado for 10 years, I only have myself to please.

I’m so happy to see you unambiguously debunking the myths about insulation and capacitor formulation differences to tone. I am an electrical engineer as well as a lifelong guitarist and have endured more bs on these topics than I care to remember. These things are aesthetic issues only. The truth is that an electric guitar is just a fantastically uncritical application for such things as connecting wire, resistors, and capacitors. None of these items is used to even a thousandth of a percent of their capacity, nor are their values critical to any serious degree. Thanks for speaking truth on these issues.

I have been doing some awesome wiring experiments with resistors and capacitors in my T-style guitar. (Many reasons I'm not using a true Tele.) Push pulls with some odd stuff and a 5 way switch. Some positions there are parallel circuits running together to make some weird ambient sounds along with clean sounds that really come out with certain effects. I have literally 20 different possibilities with 2 single coil pickups just to experiment. There are some really cool tones and it is really fun to do something different. Soon I will be producing some handmade instruments to test out the waters. This comment is to catch some questions as well as for the chance at that kit, if I understood you right!

Interesting that the first two-coil tele had a blend pot, but they've fallen out of favor. My Dean HH has a custom wiring job which adds a couple of fixed resistors so that in one of the switch positions, the tone knob affects the neck pickup much more than the bridge. My tuning uses two bass strings and four treble, and I have mutes on the upper four strings of the bridge pickup, so the effect is that the two bass strings have almost wide open tone while the treble strings can be set darker. Interestingly, for better or for worse, the tone pot also ends up affecting the balance between the bass strings and the treble strings, somewhat like a blend pot, but the ability to have the guitar sound like two instruments with very different timbres is pretty cool. Such a thing would probably have worked out pretty nicely with something close to that original tele wiring if the darkening circuit were attached to one of the coils, before the blend pot.

Never knew that you could once blend in the neck pickup while on the bridge position. I think that's super cool. Hell, I think that should be the standard middle position wiring for any double pickup guitar.
Tele mod? Hmmm.. how about putting a vari-tone style rotary switch on a tele to select different caps.. kinda like what you get on BB King's Lucille.

This was a great video, Dylan...you did your homework well on this one. Years ago I had an 1986 made 62 custom Esquire reissue that I converted to a Tele and tried all those historic Tele wiring that you covered... I even did a series-parallel plus set-up using a 5 way switch but in the end the basic regular post 1967 Tele wiring was the most practical and my favourite.

I'd call that 'dark/mud' circuit, the STRANGLE switch! LOL! I can see WHERE Clapton got his 'woman' tone from as he WAS a Tele player in the Yardbirds!

The "original" wiring sound amazing! Please do another video with other mods, I even have a suggestion: take the original writing and add a active circuit with a bass boost to see how close it sounds to an actual bass

I like the idea of a kit guitar I've been thinking of trying to do one myself. I think it would be cool to build my own guitar

I love and share your videos. I have learned so much about the science of the guitar. I am penciling out my next tele kit build and this information is helpful for figuring out what I want it to be.

I actually love the blend option with the first wiring. However I use a 5 way switch wiring that does series and series with a darkening cap as well as bridge, bridge/neck, and neck pickup with volume and tone pots. Very usefull to throw to series when soloing and lots of tones to mess with betwixt the rest of the settings! Love to see more modern Tele wiring to get me inspired... That blend is really nice... Also a nashville tele setup and wiring is daunting, cause my other mistress is a HSH strat... I just love to fiddle tones..
