Amazing, thoroughly enjoyed your exposition on Karaharapriya for many reasons. It evoked nostalgia in me. The first time I heard this raga was sometime in 1960, Chakkaniraja sung by Chembai in an AIR concert. In late 1940s, I have heard my cousin sister singing Pakkala Nilabadi. I used to wonder why the two compositions sounded different although in the same raga. That is because I did not have Swara Gnanam, even now I don't have it. Karaharapriya is my very favourite. This is one of the ragas for which I can sing the Arohanam and Avarohanam correctly. 🙏 Thank you Vijay Sir.
சக்கனி ராஜ by Karukurichi was a diamond by itself and his signature song. I have heard him play this raga and song for about 2 hours in a Concert in திருச்சி. A heavenly experience it was.
Namaste Sir! மிகச் சுலபமான ராகம்.......மாயாமாளவகௌளம் மிகவும் சுகமான ராகம்......கரஹரப்ரியா The swarasthanas ( Ri and Ga as well as Da and Ni) are far separated in mAyAmALavagowLa , making it ideal for the beginners. The swarasthanas separated and placed evenly make Karaharapriya the sweetest rAga to sing. S R2 G2 M1 P D2 N2 S' - S' N2 D2 P M1 G2 R2 S. So sAmA vEdam is in karaharapriya. True to its original name Harapriya, the rAga is suitable for the sAma vEdam and to please The nAda roopan Parama Sivan. I am surprised to learn that many composers have not used the rAgam as did Saint ThyAgarAja and Tamizh ThyAgayya. Whatever may be the reason, we seem to have missed many more beautiful songs in this rAgam.
Lovely presentation, and a great selection of pieces, as always. Thank you. My understanding is Kharaharapriya is one of the very few popular ragas in which no song has been composed by Muthuswami Dikshitar ( at least none that has survived till date) ; I have been a bit curious about the reason, given his prolific output in most of the popular ragas. The omission somehow seems to generate more interest around the raga. An explanation I had read on the internet was that Kharaharapriya, although a melakarta raga with 7 notes, was not part of the melakarta scheme followed by Dikshitar. Some sites stated that Shree ragaa( Shree, again, in Dikshitar school is supposedly slightly different from the widely accepted combination of notes for Shree ; it has an extra dhaivatam in descent, thereby giving it the same 7 notes of Kharaharapriya albeit in different order : ascent has 5 notes in both versions). Dikshitar's version of Shree is exemplified in multiple beautiful compositions e.g. Varalakshmi Namastubhyam, Shri Abhayamba Ninnu, Thyagaraja Mahadhwajaroha. It would be interesting to hear some thoughts around this. Probably I need to be patient till the 'Ranjakam Shree' episode for more elaboration on this topic. It has been an enjoyable journey in learning all through this program. Amazing insights in every episode, thank you.
Yes Mam!! Both Dheekshithar and Shyama Shastri have not composed any kritis in this Raga, however Dheekshithar Kritis in Deshi Simhaaravam are very popular, that's is Hemavathi Raga, prathi madhyamam of Kharaharapriya
Vijaya Shiva is not only a great Singer. He also explains the meaning of the Songs and the background of the Composer like Purandaradasa Best wishes Ratnakar Rao

Now even after that explanation of Navasiddhi Petralum, if I see a dog I would be reminded of Kharaharapriya and start humming this Kirthanam. 😂😂😂😂😂. Anyways a very detailed and beautiful explanation of this beautiful ragam to which Thyagaraja Swamigal and Papanasam Sivan have added different and beautiful flavours to the ragam giving a different colour inspite of Mukhari and Bhairavi the two dominant ragam's. Thanks Vijay Siva Sir. Really Navasiddhi Petralum has lots of philosophical meanings.
What a beautiful episode once again. No words to describe, one can in fact enjoy the way of his presentation with full of feel and it also gives a new dimension to the raga itself. Hats off vijay.
Excellent episode! The entire essence of Karaharapriya has been beautifully woven like a garland. The Tamil compositions are beautiful and your explanations bring out their ingenuity.
Excellent rendition and explanations. The ambience is also too good. The greenery and the birds chirping like ' pakkavadyam ' . Wait eagerly for Wednesdays.
Thanks sir for yet another informative session throwing lot of insights and detailed analysis and presentation of any topic chosen. Your sampradayic knowledge of classical art form sung with great emphasis on diction is really relishing. Kindling layman like me to search for the kritis you mention in you tube and learn. Thanks a lot for your efforts and pray sri rama bless you with eternal singing always
Thank you for yet another extremely informative session, Sir. 🙏🏻 There are indeed so many beautiful compositions in Kharaharapriya, and the Raga itself is so majestic and evergreen. It is a pity that Sri Muthuswami Dikshitar and Sri Shyama Shastri did not compose even a single song in this magnificent Raga.
