Just started my plant based journey and this is the first recipe of yours I tried. Amazing!!! WAY more flavor than I expected. I put it over rice and it's just delicious. Thank you!
I lived in Mexico and have added cocoa powder to my chili for years. It's a key ingredient in mole and great in chili. I also add unsweetened powdered peanut butter at times too.
THIS IS FANTASTIC !!! Now, I did a bit of tweaking ... veggie broth used to sauté an onion with jalapeño, added spices to that just for a minute to amp the flavors before adding rest of ingredients. Used about half again additional salsa. Adding the cocoa powder is perfection 👍🏻 My husband’s first reaction was 100% positive and he’s not WFPB . This is a WINNER !!!
I use black bean and lentil soups as sauces for veggie soups and chili.. for gravy over smashed potatoes.. even as a hot "dip" for sliced veggies! It is soo versitile!
I had a big ol' bag of dried black beans in my pantry and when I saw your video yesterday - YES! I'm making that tomorrow. Put my beans in water to soak, went to bed and first thing morning started slow cookin' my beans. All morning they simmered away with no salt. Removed most of the almost cooked beans into a bowl, picked up your recipe where you dumped the canned beans in the pot. I have to confess that adding that unsweetened cocoa powder was a bit heart wrenching as I've already invested hours into my beans, but I trusted you. Shut the fridge! What a fantastic soup. I love it and has to be the best soup I've ever made. Can't wait to serve it tonight with some biscuits (for the hubby, oh hell I might have one :-). I added about 5 drops of Colgin Pecan Liquid Smoke and it was absolutely perfect. Have fun in England/Paris. We had such a blast many, many years ago. Be proud of what you've done because I certainly am. Thanks for the inspiration.
Hi friends. I was just diagnosed with breast cancer the day before Thanksgiving. It’s even more important now that I’m eating the absolute healthiest I can! This recipe looks great!
I’m not a big soup fan at all, it I love watching you guys!! I’ve been wfpb for approximately 6 months but with many slip ups. Even after noticing all the benefits, it’s still tough. You guys are an inspiration. I’m 400lbs and want to see my kids grow. My biggest set back is meal prep. Anyway, love the videos. You guys are awesome!!!
Congrats on being plant-based. Keep trying and before you know it your "slip ups" will be a distant memory. And the weight just melts away. I have gained and lost 100 pounds twice in my life, but the third time, now, I know I am doing it the right way and I will keep it off. I had gained it back before because I was restricting my food (eating small portions) and feeling deprived only set me up for disaster--I eat all the food now I want and never have I once felt deprived. Good luck to you :)
Cocoa powder is common in Mexican sauces like mole (moh-lay), which is amazing. So I can understand why you chose it since it is so complimentary in tomato based sauces. Thanks for the recipe and inspiration.
I made this last night for dinner. Soooo good! I used less chili powder, because we have kids, but I did put in a combination of regular chili powder and Chipotle powder. Even more smoky! Served this over a bed of spinach and Brand New Vegan's Green Chili Sour Cream. Hubby added some of my pickled red onions. Thanks for a easy, quick yummy meal!
Amber Fowler I like the Kite Hill yogurt, too, but there an aftertaste that I don’t care for. I add a T or so of Califia Farms plain, non-dairy pourable yogurt and it takes that aftertaste away😃
I use that same exact broth when I make gravy we have some non-vegans in our family and I made them gravy and they didn't realize it was vegan gravy! And they requested it from now on!
I love using the scale in grams to save on messy measuring, works with peanut butter or any sticky ingredient. Good tip Jessica and about time. I just made this soup it only took a couple minutes and is really good. Thank you.
Man O Man does this look good! Brian, how dare you talk about a delicious vegan sour cream to put in the soup without giving us the recipe and showing us how to do it! Please do so when you can, and thanks so much for all these awesome videos!
I was at the office coffee machine once and had wanted a double portion of kerrie soup. The first cup came out fine, but I inadvertently pushed hot cocoa instead so it mixed together .. much to my DELIGHT. You're right Brian, cocoa DOES add a twist to the flavor of hearty food. 🌹
Thanks so much for the recipe! Just tried it and I love the depth of flavor! I made the spice mixture and split it into portions that I can add for just 1 can and voila! Instant black bean soup!
Thanks for this great video. OMGeeee! I'm so craving black bean soup. I made my first batch of organic soy yogurt cream cheese the other day. I love it! I just strained some homemade Instant Pot organic soy yogurt in a nut milk bag that I placed in a colander over a bowl and left in the fridge overnight . I was surprised at how thick it was. I then added a spray of Braggs liquid aminos and some onion powder and dill. I can hardly wait to put a big spoonful in my black bean soup!
I just made this. Brian, it is perfect the way you have it! Except my salsa is mild. I still find it to have an acceptable kick, it’s so good! Thank you so much! Perfect for finding everything already in your pantry and fridge. I had some in a soup bowl and now I put it over spring greens, brown rice, Brit’s cheese sauce and a bit of the soup. It’s really good, comforting and satisfying. Just like your Chili, a WFPB masterpiece, a keeper for sure!
I'm glad the Better than Bullion has a low-sodium version. I got the regular kind and it has a ton of sodium. Also has corn syrup solids. The best veg broth can be made from old vegetable scraps. Just collect them in the freezer and when you have enough make your broth from those, plus it reduces waste and saves money. Carrot ends, celery leaves, mushroom stems, etc.
How about three things you can do with silken tofu - I make a "mayo" to go with a mixture of nori flakes and chickpeas to make a "no tuna salad" for baked potatoes etc. Also I make a dessert which is also easy peasy - silken tofu blended with thawed frozen fruit and a little either maple syrup or date purée - makes a good easy dessert.
I make mayo from tofu, a little aquafaba, cider vinegar, lemon juice, a little dijon mustard. I mix it with chickpeas and onion and celery for Chickpea of the Sea salad. The nori would give it a fishy taste if you want that.
@@Prancer1231 I agree about the nori - I had only had nori in sushi and Korean kimbap and had not noticed the fishy taste - but in the mashed up chickpeas . it gave it a definite taste of fish (as I remember it).
So my mom was in town last month for my bday, and I took her to Trader Joe’s, or should I say she took me. But she bought me whatever I picked out and I definitely picked out that fire roasted salsa based on your suggestion. I also picked out some frozen “chicken” strips- For the grandkids of course but it ended up my husband really liked them. For me, I only eat fake meat every now and then. When I tasted them I’m certain it’s more of a tempeh than just a processed soy tofu thing. You guys might dig it! But I know you don’t have kids and really might never venture to the frozen chicken strips section hahaha. Anyways, thanks for the Trader Joe’s tips, and for this idea about black bean soup! I have a bag of black beans and several cans, plus I also got an instant pot and and emmersion blender for my bday last month, and I have a feeling this vlog has inspired me to make this! :) kind of can’t wait to get home now :) thanks guys!!!! Love the recipe videos.
I so wanted to make this today but we only had 2 cans of black beans.....so we have a pot of your chili on the stove simmering away instead !! Smells so yummy!! My daughter and I are starting this way of eating ,I am sure we won't be 100% untill we get through the holidays.....but we will try ! Looking forward to more videos!
This sounds good. I will try the cocoa powder in mine next time. My black bean soup has more beans in the blender to make it a bit creamier. I also add frozen corn and some frozen greens to up the nutrition even more. I like to serve it with baked tortilla chips. thanks for the recipe.
This will be a great soup to make when I make black beans in the insta pot. I can’t wait to try it! I’ve tried a lot of your recipes and they’ve all been delicious. Thank you for sharing 🤩
