    I think even your dog was laughing at your rodeo with that ram. The drone footage was so enjoyable, your site is really the best sheep vlogs on youtube. So positive, no moaning and whining, just getting on with the job at hand. You deserve way more subscribers.

Your dogs are terrific, wish I had helpers like them. I shear my own sheep and I'm 65. Of course I don't have as many as you. Also love "The Hoof GP" too.

    I’m quite far south in Norwich, Norfolk and have a flock of Shetlands! They are tough which is why I chose them, but they are also very independent and their fleeces are amazing, I’ve already sold next years, with a shearling fleece fetching £20.

    had a GSD/BC mix who could herd my shetland/icelandic crosses. The best part is that after a few runs at them, they realized that she was not going to take any guff. After not too long all I had to do to get them back to the shed was yell out her name. LOL they just didn't want to mess with her. Miss my silly Sadie.

      Thanks Sara, they came from two different farms and there is one small group that must have been fed/petted a bit and they are still a bit tame. But I agree they are pretty hard on the dogs, just not wanting to always frock together and sitting down in a strop when they've had enough 🤣

    My dog seemed to enjoy bossing around a flock of shetlands at a farm we helped at. She usually works with cheviots in her classes. (I find them easy to work with because they're quite friendly and respond to my verbal commands, lol. "Hey, don't go anywhere - stay with me" and they will, lol). Her (my dog's) dad has a bunch of icelandic sheep. (His favorite rug to lay on is apparently made from a ram that used to give him a hard time, lol).

    another great video Cammy, and totally agree with you regarding Shetland Sheep, they are totally under rated sheep, yes they can be a bit wild, and have a habit of breaking into several groups when bringing them in. The moorit ones are by far the most rowdy, white ones generally tend to be quieter, I find them rewarding to work with, they are very clever and don't rub it in your face much when they have you beat, unlike BF who seem to gloat, I bred pure Shetland for a couple of years, but just got far too many tup lambs and there isnt so much a market for Shetland Tups, but the ewe lambs are deffo a big asset, I started crossing Shetland ewes with Beltex and got some cracking white ewe lambs that were 2/3 beltex looking, just had a Shetland tail and Shetland mothering , which is a great thing, another great thing is their footprint and food cost, they wont even eat half the amount a mule eats and still can rear 2 decent lambs, I sold loads store this year and was getting 120-130 for a set of twins, a mule with lambs maybe give you more money for lambs, but they cost more to feed, I may go back and breed some pures , just to get ewe lambs, because when you cross them you can end up with really good ewes .

    Where I live, they have (large) Ramboullet. They were found in (France) in WWII, wandering with no caregivers at all, which was considered very unusual. They were a wrinkled skin type. Some were brought here. They did well and someone started watching for smooth skin, so they were better shearable. (Read a local book on it.)

Took awhile for me to catch what folks were saying sometimes then also, especially when they were excited and talking fast. Hopefully I will be able to go back someday.

    I never saw a breed of sheep before that had so many different facial colourations, and body types, and also colours. A few even looked like Jacob's sheep only without horns. Very interesting to view. Thank you for showing us these sheep.

    I have to say that toughness is relative. None of the breeds you mentioned can hold up here in the US deep south (Georgia). It is very hot and very humid. I run a small flock of Gulf Coast Native sheep. I don't worm adult sheep. I don't loose sheep to heat. They are way more resistant to foot rot. I'm not sure how well they would do in Scotland, but for my area, they win the toughness award.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They sound tough alright!! When i was making the video I didn't think about all the breeds that withstand extreme conditions at the other end of the scale! It;s been really interesting reading about all the different breeds! Thank you!

    I had a ram that just decided to go feral…we named him Rambo because no one could enter the pasture for any reason for 3 months as we tried to alter behavior. Finally got so bad that it was dangerous for animals and people alike. No health reason so we packed him away in the freezer. Turned out to be the finest fattest pile of sheep cuts I have ever tasted. I ended up giving away this mean 3 y/o mutton to potential customers and got 3 new customers in one shot! That’s 3 half-lamb orders for the holidays every year I can supply them! So Rambo got me 750 quid per year for the foreseeable future! I guess mean tastes great! Had to update: Lamb has doubled since I wrote this so 1500 quid per year and rising with more referral customers! The sheep business is good right now!

    If you are going to make the river running inside the pasture, then you will need the stream to be less than a tenth of a sanitary deep in order to purify and protect young sheep from drowning, and you will need barriers inside that river, even if it is an artificial river created from a natural river.
