ARE MY LAMBS HEAVY ENOUGH TO SELL? | First time inside Livestock Mart since lockdown!!

  • In this video I am weighing lambs to take to the livestock mart at Lanark.
    This isn't the happiest of processes but it's the reason we farm, to feed the nation, and I'm proud of the grass fed, low carbon footprint product we have in our Scotch Lamb.

    ABOUT ME
    I’m 31 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland, which is why I have such a strong accent! I was born and raised on a sheep farm watching my dad who was the shepherd.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on TH-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    Your patience with Fern even though she was being selectively deaf, makes me believe you'll be a kind and patient Dad. So nice to see you appreciating all Lizzy does and the two of you working as a team. Your Mom must be so happy you found a partner who's interested in sheep and good with dogs and most of all who had that handsome grandson, Jock.

    Hi Cami, Lizzie and Jock,
    Thank you for great vlogs, you are doing Scotland proud!!👍🏻I'm from down the road in Dumfries and Galloway so more familiar scenery in the Hoof GP!, but we see more of the country via you and your 🐑compared to Graham and the 🐄!!. Love all the films showing my background and basically life from the farming side but also the stunning country we live in and it's people who make it.!!

    Hi Cammy Rab here from Antrim. As a Pedigree Suffolk breeder I was happy to see the Suffolk was the heaviest and out preformed the Texels. As they usually do. You need more Black heads and black legged tups. Don't worry about the black arses. Texels are slower to finish. If mixed lambs Texels and Suffolk run together same age.the plian looking suffolks always surprises me while a good looking texel is not up to weight I observed that over the years. The old British traditional breeds ever time. 🤣👍🏼.I Love the videos keep it going. Rab Graham

    Great Video Cammy very enjoyable watch for a non farmer like me. With farms and land prices so high do you aspire to leasing a farm or will you go for an outright purchase? I imagine renting fields all over the place could be quite time consuming rather than in a ring fence...your texels looked fantastic but your suffolk x earned more in the ring but I'd love to know if it earned more per kilo against the Texels. I definitely would love to see a full video on getting your lambs ready for market. Keep up the good work Cammy I always enjoy your vids 👍

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Thanks Keith, I’m probably going to have to try and find a lease farm as the capital required to buy a farm is huge. Now that TH-cam is getting more popular I look at people like Tom Pemberton and Sandi and think maybe it could make enough to save for a farm! I could be the first person every to buy a farm from TH-cam if i keep working at it 😁😂

    Could the flowers on the fence be trumpet vine!? 🤷‍♀️ I bet it could grow in Scotland since it will survive Iowa, USA winters. Your videos make me wish the grocery stores in the area carried lamb meat. There’s a little ice cream ship in Grinnell, Iowa that sells lamb burgers and I loved them. I’d probably have to drive an hour to Des Moines, Iowa, our state capital to find it. Or some other larger town. Is it offensive to say it tasted like beef? Maybe it had some beef fat on it from cooking it on same grill as hamburgers. Very interesting video.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the UK name is Rosehip from some other comments i’ve had but could be the same as your trumpet vine! I’m not sure about it tasting like beef but we all taste things different and I love beef too so it’s a win win 😂

    Those are nice looking lambs. We ship at a similar weight and are getting $225 CAD (£131) We are very lucky to have just about the best market in the world for lamb here, which is partly because we have a shortage. We only supply about 45% of the demand.

    All Dogs Are Smart TH-cam channel has great tutorials of stock dog training that Lizzy could do inside. You said Fern was Lizzy's and doing drills inside away from stock are super helpful to proof Fern's skills! Being the superwoman that Lizzy is I bet she could do drills with baby in hand like it's nothing.
    Lizzy seems to be superwoman, if I was pregnant I wouldn't be able to do half the things she did on a daily basis. It's rather intimidating if I'm being honest lol.

    They were rose hips on the hedge, that's shrub roses and that is the seed pod of it, you can grow your own roses from seed...oh no Scottish men should not attempt English accent🤣

    Cammie, is there a price breakdown on the market lambs? for say meat vs worth of the hide or other by product? or is that too irritating to break down at the sales stage?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      So that price is for the live lamb so it’s then up to the buyer where it goes so I don’t know how the other costs break down. 👍

    Question from Illinois, USA.
    Are horses okay around sheep to be used as a mode of transportation while herding them, or is it just easier on foot?

    • @TheSheepGame

      No that’s fine! I actually have a video where we used a horse to gather some sheep 😁

    Big question for you, answer if you can…I have a small flock of sheep that I am wintering for friends in a separate barn and the sheep will absolutely NOT come into the barn to sleep at night no matter how cold. All will come in for hay and grain but one of them will not come in even to eat. She is getting thin and desperate looking and I’m out of things to try. She won’t herd in and will not follow the food. If I don’t take hay and grain out to her after a few days she will starve herself. At this point i think she has miscarried because of the lack of nutrition. Now I’m just trying to keep her alive. Any suggestions? PS. None of my sheep are having any problem figuring out what to do!

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'd say she was needing shut in for a couple days to force her to eat in the barn. If she is getting weak now and pregnant you may need to consider energy drench. If she goes down and you are a distance to your vet then a can of flat red bull can give them some energy until you get stuff from the vet

    The weight of the lambs at home I didn't learn that in school just basic math. So next time you do a video at home at least I do like knowing for some reason how much they weigh at birth and when they go to the auction barn. Sometimes Sandi would let us see it but not much lately or I'm not catching all the videos. Like say a number on the scale for us to watch for. It's 10-1-21 at 2:11am. Shopping for tomorrow late morning I hope. Later.
