    ABOUT ME
    I’m 30 years old and I’m a sheep farmer from Ayrshire in South West Scotland. That’s why I have such a strong accent!! I was born and raised in sheep with my dad being a shepherd on an Ayrshire farm.
    At 18 I went away from farming to work in the city (something I still do) and at 23 (2013) I decided I wanted to do something for some extra money so I went on a sheep shearing course. The hardest thing I’ll ever do was learning to shear sheep. [shudders thinking about it]
    I shore whilst on my holidays from work for 2 years and then in 2015 my dad died so I decided to get my own sheep so I could continue working with sheep as it was something I loved doing. From there it escalated quickly from my first 4 sheep in my mum’s garden to now running around 600 breeding ewes.
    I shore over 15,000 sheep this season in UK and I also travel to Norway for shearing in March and September. (Covid messed it up this year)
    A few years ago I bought myself a sheep pregnancy scanner and have been building up my run since then.
    I watched a few farm vlogs on TH-cam and decided I could have a go and now here we are!
    Thanks for watching my videos and please subscribe if you want to see more in future.

    Am slowly working out your various breeds. Particularly liked your new texel x ram...we found texels great over older ewes but disastrous over maidens.

    • @cryingbroken8824
      @cryingbroken8824 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Got ONE Texel as a bummer lamb, before he went to the freezer, he wanted to fight everything in sight, which cemented the décision.He was yummy. Best thing about him😋😉
      The other ram lamb we had was a Rideaux and was more of an odd looking puppy than anything, passed his nature on to all his lambs too. Very cuddly as a baby...only a few pounds untîl he was about a month old then he seemed to double in size every other day; day after day....after day after week and so forth ,until suddenly he's 300 lbs! One day, the lady who'd last leased him was getting her flock sheared...hubby, loaded Toby into the back of the truck, drove up, walked into the barn, asked the two lady shearers if they had"time" for one more? They both kindof rolled theirveyes and went what IS it?, he of course laughs and proudly says "just a wee ram.." they say" bring him out we'll look", hubby brings him out with nothing but a piece of binder twine fashioned into a rough halter...Toby placidly walking along...the two ladies are going you lead THAT with BINDER TWINE? HUBBY GOES, "why wouldn't I? he's calm..." " but he's a RAM!" " HE'S ALWAYS LIKE THIS..." they brought out their tools snd 5 minutes later, poor Toby's standing naked, wondering what happened. The ladies said, any time you have more like him, CALL US!"I gather they, too were impressed with the temperament. Jme and o...
      Other Sheep Farmers would fight to *lease* him for the following years(his babies followed strongly in his footsteps). Given that he was built like a brick chithouse, and passed THAT on to his lambs as well, along with being born like a tiny, limp,rag doll (he was 1of 3)mum loved the other 2, never noticed him..we got him (cuddle bug)sack of bones covered by fleece, content to sleep until you woke him for a bottle, then he'd drain that and sleep, and wait until you next woke him:2- 350 ml bottles of cow's milk daily until he started eating sheep's ration, freechoice, from the feedmill along with handpicked grass from the long stuff growing around the buildings, he gained weight on air...yeah, they ALL wanted Toby's services if they could get him! Best 10$ I ever spent...😁💞(as a bummer lamb)became excellent friends with his breeder/seller...until she and her other half split, the flock was sold off and she went back to being a city girl with her city job and life...

    Interesting to see the explanations behind why some individuals should be kept for breeding, while others have qualities you would not want going forward in your flock. Also interesting was the sheep versions of the terms “undershot” and “overshot,” which seem to be different for how those terms are used to describe teeth in dogs. A classic example of a dog breed known for its undershot bite is the Bulldog - the incisors and canines in its lower jaw should stick out in front of the corresponding upper teeth. I’m not aware of any dog breeds with intentionally overshot bites (top incisors and canines stick out at least .25 inches from corresponding lower teeth), but the ewe used as an example, clearly showed her bottom teeth didn’t line up to touch the front pad - they “overshot” the pad.

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes it is interesting how the terms are interpreted in different animals

      Increasing numbers. I’ll have a lot of ewe lambs running with a view to gimmering them.

    Cammy, why do you have three axles on such a small trailer. I figure it has something to do with smaller truck size and y’all roads?

    • @TheSheepGame
      @TheSheepGame  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah i think it’s also to do with the weights? It’s a 14’ trailer which is big for here. Our trucks are only licensed for 3.5 tonne how does that compare to u guys?

    • @dustycows
      @dustycows 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TheSheepGame in the states a 3.5 tonne, would be what we call a heavy half ton or almost 3/4 ton. 3/4 ton are 8800 lbs (Imperial) for the intercontinental types that would be 4 Tonne.
      Our small sheep trailer has a single axle rated for 3500 lbs. Most stock trailers here have two axles and are larger livestock trailers will have three axles, being able to carry 20,000lbs.
      Our trucks very in size from midsize and full size. Most livestock producers use 1 ton trucks with or with out dual wheels, depending on need will be 2wd or 4wd.
      Most will run a 1 ton or larger pickup styled truck. A triple decker gooseneck 40ft sheep trailer can be pulled with a 1 ton or bigger.
      That’s the short of it.

      Aye it’s a different game there for sure. Diesel will be a lot cheaper for sure! 😁

      @@TheSheepGame triple decker sheep trailers aren’t the norm. Mostly single deck and double sheep trailers.
      The large commercial flocks in the western states are hauled in large livestock semi trailers.
