I just love watching them run, and when a truly special dog comes along that like you said moves the needle for track attendance and handle AND performs like Champ nothing better. I'm jealous and hope you folks across the pond appreciate that you stll get to go to the races . In the states it's dead, and so sad. I think there are like 4 tracks maybe 3 still operating and they're on borrowed time. When the Florida ban went into effect that was all she wrote there was still 9-10 tracks at the time it was voted through easily in what was supposed to be a close vote. I had the privelage of living near Multnomah Greyhound Park in Portland, OR where i saw 1986 GROC winner Ben G Speedboat run for several years, and local dog Daring Don win in 1990 when Multnomah hosted the Race of Champions which had anywhere over the years between $125,000 and $250,000 in prize money with 1/2 to the winner. I also at Multnomah watched for better part of 3 summers in a row 1988-90 watch one of the best US pure sprinters of all time He's My Man whose rush to the 1st turn was awesome. There in the late 80's early 90's i'd say across the country between the 550yd and 670yd stakes races 2 dozen or more that had $100,000 in prize money. there was even 2 or 3 Invitational no qualifying 100,000 races , it was AWESOME. Then 10 years in Denver working less than a mile from Mile High Greyhound Park and so many Oshkosh dogs i can't keep track, 89' GROC winner Oshkosh Juliet and her littermate Oshkosh Lively also made the final as well !, 2X All-american and capt. Oshkosh Racey who made a won stakes finals at both distances. As well as a dog very similar in style to Scurlogue Champ Oshkosh Rambo who could bring the crowd to their feet coming from 20 lengths or more as they hit the stretch turn and made it seem the others were running in quicksand he went by them so fast it took your breath away... Or at least mine anyway lol. Maybe the best of all cut down by a career ending injury after 7 races at Mile High 5 of them setting and resetting the track record "Molotov" . if you search youtube there are several videos of him.and another by injury when they escaped the kennel and got out on pavement and ruined his pads and a leg injury to boot, oh shit what was his Oh "Vaporize" Sorry got nostalgic there, but so many great summer memories at those 2 fantastic facilities that had some of the best dogs in the country year after year. I miss it for sure

I watched this dog race many times . It was often pitched against weak opposition , in other words Mr Peckham placed the dog well . Its quite true he was crowd puller . It was also true it had his card marked for "not chasing " , once at a Walthamstow in a Trial . Is a pity his Race card isn't available for inspection . I loved his races , the bookies would always bet him short which meant there were other dogs over priced like Glenowen Queen, but there were many others he avoided at the time , basically anything with a bit of early pace that stayed had a good chance to beat him . He met his nemesis in Ballyregan Bob who achieved much harder feats against top class opposition all the time . Sure he won many races against weak opposition , his run of 16-17 wins was well put together , no issues here. Before Scurlogue there had been others doing it , mainly on Grass tracks where it was easier to do , one in particular was Ubegood who raced off of Slough , same deal really. I guess the PR and the stringing together of the winning run was the main issue . Sure he was great for the Racing game no issues. I still dont believe he lost sight of the hare at Wembley , I was there , he simply stopped chasing as was already known about him from previous instances , pity . He had no realistic chance of beating Bob over 710 . I always felt but never knew for sure was that there was some kind of tacit link to some very well known bookies at the time as the bookies made fortunes out of his races , how not to when he was 1-5 on and could be beaten ! If you look at some of Late Late Shows runs over 500 a while back you'd also see a truly amazing dog with a finish , check it out.

      Thanks for that info sir...
Seems a shame to bring down our heroes...but, as always, the bookie's are behind it!!

Both great dogs, but, over the longer distances Scurlogue would be the better dog, he didn't just race against mugs and 20 track records over 663 to 888m speaks for itself, sure over the shorter distances you would have to back Bob but over marathon distances Scurlogue had no equal.

There was a dog at Lincoln Greyhound Park by the name of subliner who did the same thing as this dog has been doing from last to first every time. And I was there just about every time to lay down my bet on this dog. At last count SUBLINER had won 18 straight races. Then I got laid up and could not go and put my bet on subliner so I don't know if he extended the 18th straight wins even further and amazing Greyhound to say the least all black and what a closure!

January 1981, Florida. I went to a dog track. I saw a dog who was dead last until they started to turn for home. He blew them away !!! My thought was > what compels a dog to speed up like that ???

Just has tremendous reserves of stamina Bill.
Scurlogue might be the one exception but no dog runs faster on the second lap than they do on the first lap but the others are slowing so it is deceptive.
I saw him at Catford a couple of times. Fantastic :)

@@Isleofskye Just the same with thoroughbreds. They all slow down [except rarely] in each succeeding quarter. "Crawling home" is an apt description of what happens in any animal race.
