Thanks for all your Golf R videos! I picked up my 2017 model about a week ago. I wish we got some of the things the UK models have. We don't get the button by the door, the drawers under the seats, I had to take out 2 screws so the armrest would open, and we can't open the windows from the key fob unless you tweak it in aftermarket software.
Jay Kay I believe it has something to do with a law regarding imports with the drive shaft being near so close to it. I also saw a different theory but don't recall what it was. Either way the children will be safe with it closed.
I've learnt a few things from these videos as I'm not one for reading manuals. The GTD I have is very much the same with this kind of stuff except I don't start it with the key, it has the button which was standard and I'm surprised you didn't also get that as standard. As I got mine in July I think they were starting to throw all options at it as that new facelift was imminent. I don't have the extending armrest though.
Hey buddy. With the alarm and the door here's some advice. 1. If you press the lock button ONCE...this activates SAFELOCK. This means that if the door is opened from the inside the alarm goes off. 2. If you press the lock button TWICE...this DEACTIVATES SAFELOCK. This means that should a passenger on the inside want to open the door, they can do so without switching off the alarm when the door is opened. 3. Pressing that little button to the side of the door just activates and deactivates the internal motion sensors (as far as I'm aware). Hope that helps ;)
Thanks for that mate! I'm still surprised that the infotainment system works as normal even when the internal monitoring system isn't deactivated and the alarm is armed
I've got 66 plate r, don't have the performance monitor on mine...hope the dealer can sort this as I would like this feature as well....Great video mate
According to the service team I can't get the software updated! That is really crap IMO as software updates should be a doddle! You definitely should have it as my service team told me it's a 66 feature
Jay Kay , I've got an appointment with vw on the 19th for the driver side seat as it keeps making a clicking noise in bends and bumps, this is going to be my 3rd visit for the same issue..issue still persists...I'm sure they will make up some other reason for the software upgrade..will let u know how it goes
Yeah let us know mate. I'd say you'll get the update needed for the performance monitor. I'm going to call a Apr and ask them if they think my R can get performance monitor as it could be my dealer fobbing me off

Hello mate what reason have you been given? When I did speak to my dealer he said because that feature is not on my cars technsheet then I can't have it. If I get chance I'm going to confacf VWUK and see what they say. I think you can apply pressure on them who then get your dealer to act. But if they tell me I can't access it then I guess we've been robbed (again!) lol. I'm not too fussed though as you can't really use it anyway, it's too low down so you'd lose focus of the road in front of you
I took my to Preston VW, they didn't have a clue and couldn't help. I've since been in contact with Helston VW (where I bought the car) they are still investigating. Will let you know how I get in with them.
Hi, is your R suffering from loud exhaust note on slowing down, below 2000 rpm? Driving through town, approaching a red light, the DSG will go 4th, 3rd, 2nd, keeping the engine between 1800-1200 rpm, and I hear the exhaust getting louder than when above 2000 rpm. It looks like a known issue (the exhaust flaps open, causing drone) that is sorted with a software update.
I hadn't noticed this because I tend to be in eco mode until I'm in open country. So the noise is a result of the automatic going down gears or is it when you down shift manually??
I am driving it in Comfort mode (the car has DCC and DSG) through town and on approaching a red light (or anything that requires you to slow down) without using the brake, i.e. using the engine to slow down, when the rpm go below 2000 rpm there's a big increase in exhaust note in the cabin. I can describe it as a nasty, cheap aftermarket exhaus drone. :) Didn't try with ECO though...however, I saw a couple of threads on forums that this is an issue with the map that controls the exhaust flaps in the two outer exhaust pipes. It should be closed all the time unless you are accelerating hard and over 4000 rpm...
i see! Next time I'm out il stock in race manual mode and use the gears to slow when approaching lights and see if I get the same. Or will sounaktor hide it? Would I better off trying in normal mode?
Jay Kay Ithink you should try in Normal mode. Soundaktor cannot hide it, has nothing to do with it. The exhaust note becomes so loud that if you have a passenger talking to you in the meantime he/she would definitely raise voise :) I know the R is a sports car but this is just too loud, and I know from public oppinion that the R is usually a very quiet car, even too quiet. I guess it is not a well spread issue.
I drove the car and played with the settings of the DCC. Definitely ECO mode is quiet. I was able to setup an Individual config with mixture of ECO, NORMAL and COMFORT modes for engine, drive and suspension and now I am happy with the results. :)
Did not know about the drawers.. nice to find out i had them :) Also, when you open your windows with the remote, can you make them go back up again with the remote?

I think the digital gauges are a really cool feature on the Golf R. Is there any aftermarket software available to allow us to install the boost gauge?
yeah i liked the look of them as well. Not to my knowledge but i think you can download an app with a boost gauge that works with the Mk7. I vaguely remember someone mentioning it. Have you spoken to any tuning houses like APR or Revo? That might offer a solution if you do their stage one
Get yourself a Obdeleven m8. Have a look on TH-cam of videos on it. Can use it it for all kinds and do coding like vcds but very easy to use. Going off this video you'd like it a lot . 🖒🖒
Why dont you get someone to code your car a vagcom specialist coder. They might be able to switch the boost gauge on? They can also turn on off hiden features you dont know about.
It'll void VW warranty mate. My service team tell me that launching the car voids warranty too. They are getting back to me to confirm that but of it's true, it means buying a new R is pointless!
The only use i got out of the opening windows with the key is if i have to give a family member a lift i can put it down a lil without them knowing to let the dank smell out ;)
Mate this is brilliant!! My dealer aren't even returning my calls now even though a guy at VWUK said he would put a techinical request into them Which should force them to call me... I have no idea what's happening but il try other VW shops!
Jay Kay as they'll make little money on a small change they probably won't be so keen to help which is disappointing! I'm hoping to get an R in the near future and this would be a great feature so let me know how you get on
I will do mate. One thing I will warn you about it that launch control doesn't void warranty, but if during a launch failure occurs, the dealer doesn't fix the problem. They invesigate it and determine if it's a wear and tear problem rather than mechanical fault! I think that blows personally and has i of known that warranty was bullet proof I'd have bought a used R out of warranty and save £15k
Jay Kay that seems very strange, why make an option on the car and tell you how to use it, then void warranty if it causes an issue!? I'm looking at 2nd hand ones as they are cheaper and warranty actually stays with the car rather than the owner which is a good point.
Exactly my question! It's coming in a video though where I recorded the call between myself and VWUK. You can launch the car and it won't void the cars warranty but any failures during the actual launch will be investigated
I've also asked about the TV function which I haven't got , but which is mentioned in the manual. Hopefully that can be activated too...

Cancel that, I do have the extending armrest. 5 months ownership and 13k miles I didn't know half of this stuff in your video.

Did the blue line on speedometer went from 0 to 8 on both gauges they have that future ?

Yes mate, i think i covered that in this video didn't i?? All you do is hold down lock and the windows start raising
